Our tradition here at Pasty Central is to reserve the last day of each month to mention those that have gone on before us. This last day of September we remember:

Bernice Mae Archibald
Cheryl DePuydt
Larry Kaipio
Art Moilanen
Paul Laurn
Bill Penprase
Kenneth E. Stenson
Shirley Stenson
The brave men and women who died to keep us free

We remember them, honor them, and keep them in our hearts. You are welcome to add your loved ones here also. Our thanks to Frank Anderson for this month's remembrance photo.

Loved and missed

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 08:36 am:

Remembering loved ones who died because of cigarettes: grandpa Charles Rutila, mother and father in law Mildred and Robert Hickcox, uncle in law Bud Welsh, dear aunt Helen Huhta Leveque, cousin (tragically her son, lost at an early age to smoking-related lung cancer, in spite of watching the loss of his mother) Larry Leveque, cousin Dennis Niemi, friend Paul Bennett.

I worry about two very close loved ones who smoke cigarettes, are adicted, are in denial about the consequences.

In Memory of Loretta Garnell...

Even as the sun goes down
to end the light of day,
it’s rising on a new horizon
somewhere far away...

And though our world seems darker
for the loss of one we miss,
our loved ones life is dawning
in a brighter world than this...

To those gone, but not forgotten . . . we'll see you on the other side.

By Therese (Therese) on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 11:49 am:

In memory of Jim Carson, a loved father who died on this date at 12:19 PM in 1998. Dad smoked for 60 of his 73 years, and finally even his 'good genes' couldn't save him from the consequences. Dad loved Copper Harbor and took Mom there for their 35th anniversary to see the color change. This October we kids and a few grandkids are taking her back again.

By david sandretto (Yooperdfs) on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 12:27 pm:

Yes, smoking is such a tragic habit. I can remember my grandfather asking me if I saw the sign between Hancock and Calumet, "You are now breathing the purest most vitalitizing air on earth", while he had a cigarette in his hand. And yes, smoking finally claimed his life in 1983.

By lz (Llamamama) on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 03:19 pm:

Interesting thread developing. Lost my Mother in 1986 to smoking. Lost her father to emphysema years before - a pipe smoker. My Dad quit at 52 and lived to 89.
It is hard to stay passive when I witness young people smoking.

By Connie Pizzitola (Connie_co) on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 03:19 pm:

Also, sadly Craig Albrecht passed at the youthful age of 44 this month. He was a member of the St. Ignatius Loyola Church and the leader of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a beloved member of the excellent Houghton High School class of 1980.

Last night around 10pm (pacific time) Bill Penprase went home to be with the Lord. He was a dear family friend and loved by so many in the Copper Country. I considered him my official UP historian. Our best to his children and grandchildren. Sally, CO

It was 5 mo yesterday that my husband,Hal passed away. We sure miss him alot. It is especially difficult to not have him here to share things with.

By Therese (Therese) on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 09:18 pm:

Fran, I'm sorry you lost your husband. Think of the times you will share with him when you join him in Heaven! There will be lots of catching up to do. God bless you, and all who are missing people close to them.

By Carole (Carole) on Friday, September 30, 2005 - 10:57 pm:

In memory of Mike Plucinski who passed away on Sept.29th after a battle with lung cancer. Mike was our camping chairman at the Detroit Sportsmen Congress for three or four years. He gave up that position to run for office on the Board of Directors. But our camping meetings were never that same after he left. And will miss seeing him ride around on his golf cart and chatting with fellow campers.

Amen to that!

By Candy Goulette (Cagoulet) on Sunday, October 2, 2005 - 11:30 am:

A little late, but I'd like to add Ervin Martin of Chassell, who passed away this month of lung cancer. He, too, was a longtime smoker. His wife, Pat, kept the Daily Mining Gazette editorial staff in line for a lot of years. She's in failing health now, too, and living with her son and his wife near Milwaukee. Erv was a gruff guy with a heart of gold who never let Pat drive in bad weather. He was well-known to area bowlers as quite an ace. He'll be missed.

I was a little late in my comments about the death of Bill Penprase, but they can be read under What's U.P. on Sunday, Oct 2.

By Judy Machnacki (Judyupr) on Wednesday, October 5, 2005 - 04:44 pm:

In memory of my beloved Pop, Steven Krastes, who passed away three years ago on October 25th after battling lung cancer. He loved the UP and taught me to do the same. We crossed the Mighty Mac every year to get to God's country and now I know he's there forever. Rest in Peace, Pop.
Love, Judith Ann
