This weekend Edie and I are traveling downstate, and spent the night with Jonathan and Katriina in Negaunee. (Yes, she has received a lot of heat about the hurricane). Last night we ate in Marquette (the Timber-something) and talked about restaurants in the U.P. and what makes them a memorable experience. So this morning for our weekly Shoebox Memory I rummaged through Chuck Voelker's Copper Country Reflections and found this roadhouse shot from the 40's or 50's. This establishment is off US-41 between Calumet and the Houghton County Airport. I'm not very well-versed in bar and saloon history, but that tall thing that looks like a space ship appears to be a jukebox. And I'll wager the wide open space between the tables might be a dance floor.

The color season is off to a good start here in Upper Michigan. On the drive from the Copper Country to Marquette we encountered some areas where the leaves were quite advanced, but also you'll see many trees which haven't started turning. It's one of my favorite times of the year, as the landscape undergoes such a radical change over the next month.

Buckle up, drive safely, have a good week :0)

Hey I know that place. I was just there yesterday with my friend Annette. She had to pick up her last check. She got a really good job in Gwinn. I'm so proud of her. Only bad thing about her move is now my phone bill will go up from gabbing with her. Have a good day all and HAPPY BIRTHDAY FRAN in Ga.

We love the paradise, eat there every time we go up. Does not look much different now, different juke box now. Last time we were there somebody asked for non smoking and was moved to the table right next to where they were sitting! Good food and a good price.

Spent quite a few New Years Eves in the Paradise.
Had a great time. Ate a few fish dinners in there. Good food at the time. Frank Stukel, wonder if he was any relation to the former Rudy Stukel that owned the Rudy's Bar which is now Bleachers Sports Bar in Hancock.

Boy the Paradise hasn't changed much....lots more tables and a couple booths.....the space ship is gone and a pool table is in its spot...that is what I love about the U.P.!!!
There are so many places that have been here forever......"older than dirt my girlfriend always says"....

Have a blessed day to all.....

The Paradise is one of my favorite places to eat and hang out. And, Annette is the primary reason! Just after moving back here after being gone a few decades, we visited Paradise Gardens and Annette was the wonderful friendly competent bartender/server who welcomed us. It was instant friendship. She will be missed, but she has left her influence on many of the remaining staff. Sharon and Mike Monette (current owners) are nice friendly people as is their staff. If you want an unpretentious atmosphere, friendly staff and locals, and good food, visit the Paradise. Wonderful NY Strips, good bar (and prices), ribs, pork chops, and many sandwiches.

Good luck to Annette in her new job.

For those of you who don’t know where Paradise Gardens is, it is the first right off US 41 going north of the airport on Oneco Road then an immediate right again -- about a ½ block off the highway. See you there!

Good morning from Mishawaka IN. Now that looks like a great place to eat! Atmosphere being one of the key ingredient in makeing a good resturant along with good food and good people. Looks like its going to be a beautiful day so enjoy everyone.

Brian, Annette is my best friend. I'm waiting for her now. She's stopping by for coffee before she heads out. She's late!!! Paradise had there employee party last night. Hmmm, maybe thats why she's not here yet. and I almost forgot to say--- their food is GREAT.

By Fran in GA (Francesinga) on Sunday, September 18, 2005 - 01:15 pm:

We debated whether to eat there when we were home for the DBHS reunion in O2. We stayed at the Motel near there but I wasn't sure if they had food or not. Sure regret not stopping!!! I should have known a bar in the CC would have food. When my daughter was in high school they were talking about their summer vacations and she was telling how her and a cousin had a great meal in a bar(The Board of Trade) Well they looked at her like she had committed a grevious sin and couldn't believe that this was normal ocuurrence!! :)It tickled her!!

Cindy Lee,thank you for the birthday wish!Yesterday Alex,Cindy and their son drove up from Atlanta and surprised me! They treated me to a nice meal.My daughter and family came over also so it was nice.Today I am going to take a nap as Cindy and I talked late.

Just ate at the Paradise Friday night with a friend. I had the charbroiled shrimp which they did a spectacular job on. YUM!!! It was the first time I've not elected for take out in a long time. It was great to sit down and be waited on. Every component of the meal was fantastic!

Cindy-- where in Gwinn did your friend Annette find a really good job? I like living here but must say there isn't a whole lot in Gwinn. No offense to fellow Modeltowners!! My hubby & I go to the Paraside Bar for their fish on Fridays when we go to the Copper Country. It's very good!! We know Mike from years ago & never thought he would be in the bar-restaurant business. I think you can still find him outside repairing an old truck or something tho.haha We're real happy for him & Sharon. We enjoy the food & hospitality.

The Paradise is approximately where the red X is...
Just north of the airport.

I see on John Dee's board that the "Paradise [Grill] has been closed since spring, not sure if Mike and Sharon plan on reopening, it is for sale also."

Does anyone have an update?

By Donna M Stefani (Diva_donna) on Saturday, November 19, 2011 - 03:02 am:

Unfortunately, the Paradise was never reopened. All of the contents, including the wonderful paintings, were sold at auction.
It sat empty there for many years & the property was just sold this past summer.
