One of the honored names this month belongs to a well-loved former resident of Still Waters. Back in 2000 we celebrated Ione Westlake's 90th birthday. Earlier this month I attended the memorial service for Ione in Eagle Harbor. It was good to hear the wonderful memories of her life and say goodbye to our old friend. She was a remarkable lady.

By John Schneider (Goodhandsman) on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 11:04 am:

We lost a good friend from Iron River this month. Leonard J Ponozzo passed away on August 15th. Leonard loved the outdoors and had a camp south of Sidnaw near Winslow Lake. During some of those very tough winters he would haul hay out to his camp to help keep the deer from starving. In 95 the county started plowing the road in winter between Sidnaw and Iron River, it allowed access to my friend Roger Wagers camp as well. Leonard was a friend who you could call to open up your camp in the middle of winter! Arriving to a warm cabin with a path shovelled in from the road after driving 8 hours+ to the North County was a real blessing. I learned much about real fabric of those in the UP in the short time we knew Leonard and his family. He will be missed.

By Philip M. Hart (Philipmhart) on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 01:20 pm:

Ione Westlake was quite a lady. Sorry she is gone but she is with her Heavenly Father. Being in Colorado, we often get news late and quite often from Pasty.com. She was a good friend of Susan's family and when Susan and I married, she became one of mine as well. I remember that she, as a pharmacist, helped us when our kids, Brian and Kevin, had illnesses. When we think of Eagle Harbor, we think of the Westlakes. Our condolences to her family.

By Steve (Chevysac) on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 - 01:52 pm:

Remembering my Aunt: Ruth Alden CLark Lill. My dad's older sister that passed away on 8/22 at the age of 92. Tops in her Marquette's Graveret HS class of 1936. She was a wonderful lady that had remarkable endurance, loved life and marriage. She was a widow 4 times over. Lost husbands to Lukemia (9 Mos. after getting married), liver failure (married 16 Years), bone cancer (married about 12 years) and alzheimers (about 10 years).
She had two daughters of her own and three step daughters. At the age of 86 after living in Florida for over 30 years she had a new home built in Marquette so she could be home "in her final years". She took after her mother and grandmother, also living into their 90's. In fact her Grandma was the first white child of Marquette (New Wooster at the time)when she arrived in 1846. God Bless this every happy woman who had so many good memories of my home town!
