On the fourth Sunday of July in 2001, at the suggestion of Nancy Nelson, we began this weekly feature known as Shoebox Memories. For so many families, an old shoebox in the closet or attic contains treasures from the past, waiting to be discovered. It is my pleasure each Sunday to present these memories, often dealing with the mining era, lighthouse history, landmarks, notable events, etc., etc. I realized this morning that the Pasty Cam itself is becoming a shoebox of sorts, with tens of thousands of pictures which may be referenced decades from now, recalling the turn of another century.

Some of my favorite subjects over these years have been the children. Last night I spent some time browsing the Guest Gallery, catching up on all the great new photos in this growing collection. The top picture above by Tina Hyrkas caught my attention, and reminded me of so many other neat shots on the Pasty Cam of kids keeping cool. These are just a few of those memories which will, no doubt, be cherished by the parents and used to torment their adult offspring years from now.

Our thanks to all the contributors of these gems - for which you will find acknowledgement on the mouseover of each picture.

The weather report says temps in the 90's are in store again this week across much of the U.P... Find a way to keep cool, and have a memorable week :o)

Can't believe I'm the first post!! Love the pictures of the kids. Is the top blue-eyed cutie the baby with the brown mouth in the group shot with the ice creams?

No, they're different cuties. But either would be a fine poster child on the new line of Pasty baby food rumored to be coming to a store near you.

New Flavor

Thanks for posting the 'swimsuit edition' picture of my girls...Kaylee & Kelsey. That picture is almost 10 years old now, and to show how time marches on..and that they have grown up (sadly for mom, who feels old...) here's a pic from their trip to the UP just a few weeks ago. We enjoyed perfect UP weather for beaching & boating, and have returned to sweltering Middle Tennessee Heat.

12 more days and I will be relaxing on Mud lake can't wait. The pic of the kids in the snow, is sure a cooling way to find relief from down state heat.

Great pictures!! You can't go wrong with pictures of cute babies.

Patti, your girls are very attractive but it is hard to watch them get older. We only have our children for such a short time. I guess the important thing is to enjoy them while we have them and cheer them on. Then we have our memories....and,if we are lucky, grandchildren.
I love the picture of the baby in the bucket.

Grandmother feels old also, but very happy to have the girls. They keep you thinking young.

What a great bunch of spontanious giggles that today's Shoe Box pictures brought to my home! In a few years let's match up these with actual growing up pictures.

Hope everyone is having a great Sunday, a little humid today. 80 degrees here in Houghton. Staying indoors with the A/C on watching the NASCAR
race and dogsitting the newest member of our family while daughter is out shopping.

The swimsuits in the snow picture was taken the first week of June, on what John Dee calls "The Laurium Glacier"...Maybe he remembers which winter was more harsh....'94-95; or '95-96?

By Therese Carson (Therese) on Sunday, July 24, 2005 - 07:40 pm:

Oof! It is very warm and humid this evening. I could change into a swimsuit and drive over to the lake to swim, but am opting for putting the snow angel photo on my desktop. I tried doing that ten years ago with my young niece. We fell backwards into soft powder and completely disappeared. Powder was 3 feet deep, and it was a long way to the surface and air.

By Bob Gilreath (Bobg) on Monday, July 25, 2005 - 09:03 am:

wow great shots, the first one is a fantastic view.

Hard to believe my 20, 18 and 12 year olds were that size once! ;-)

I am reminded of my own carefree days of summer, when everything was free and a glimpse of the glint of water brought palpitations.
Years later I learned to pluck the fallen weenie from the coals, wipe it off and eat it,along with the sand seasoned chips, followed by a warm pop chaser. The gooey marshmallow mess is another chapter. It was fun though.
Kids are unable to hide their excitement(and disappointment) and they are more than willing to strike a pose. I've never heard a child say,"Get away from me with that thing!" Adults will threaten to throw me and my camera into the lake, but with kids,I am the helpless captive-in a GOOD way! Awesome pics!

I checked John Dee historical weather and the winter was 95-96 with 329.1 inches of snow. Pasty and John Dee are my daily fixes for a stuck in Wisconsin upper wannabe.
