Are those horns on that bat....never saw one up close. They are an evil-looking creature!

By Gary W. Long (Gary_in_co) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 - 12:48 pm:

Those are ears, not horns on that bat. They rely on echolocation to navigate through the air so they need those ears to pick up the sounds that bounce back off objects.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 - 01:40 pm:

We had a bat in the grill of the truck one time. We saw something fly in front of the truck and when we stopped for gas...it was a bat. A nice size one, too. It did not survive, it lost one wing inside the grill. We had a black crow fly into the grill, but, it survived, just very stunned when it fell to the ground then took off.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 - 02:26 pm:

Thanks, Gary. Come to think of it, I think I once knew that but had forgotten.....oh well, you know what they say about old people and their minds.:]

What do they say about old people and their mind? I forgot.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 - 06:02 pm:

Bats are such wonderful creatures. Always wanted to visit Austin Texas and watch the daily flight of thousands of bats heading out of their caves for the evening patrol for insects...millions of insects! Where I used to live next to The Mississippi there were several bats that cruised around our deck keeping the area clear of mosquitos! Loved watching them. And NO they did not try to get in my hair!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 - 07:28 pm:

My, that's quite the "core sample" (2005).

I have seen a number of core samples, in the range of 4" to 6" in diameter, but nothing like this one.

I'm afraid I've never even seen this one. Five feet in diameter? Wow!

What kind of drill was used to extract that monster core sample? Not quite a "Tunnel Boring Machine" (TBM) but big!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 - 07:46 pm:

I need to get an "rd" and my collection of bird awards will be complete. Thank you for this fine award I will treasure it for the rest of my life.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 - 08:07 pm:

Way to go, Mikie! By the way, did you nab my croc yet?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, October 29, 2011 - 09:14 pm:

I think the croc made it into the drain Alex.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, October 30, 2011 - 09:30 am:
