Good Morning! It's a cool day here in mid-Michigan, so many of the kids wore sweaters or jackets to school for their first day.

Capt. Paul & Dr. Nat, do I remember you live somewhere near Magnolia, TX? Regardless of where you live, I hope and am sending you both positive vibes that you, your home, and pets, etc, are saved from those awful wildfires. It's really weird that a tropical storm can just bring Texas low humidity and dry winds to fan the flames and burn so many homes and so much forest from the Austin area east to almost Houston, but none of the much needed rain! When my Dad was alive, he owned a lot in the Bastrop area, Tahitian Village. My brother and I were relieved to finally get rid of that lot last year: it had been under four feet of water in one spring flood, and now the great wildfire that is destroying so many homes in the area.

A bit late on the Pasty Cam this morning, as cell phones, land lines, 911, etc. are down in the Keweenaw Peninsula this morning.

But Pasty.NET wireless continues to keep us connected, thanks to Peninsula Fiber Network.

What happened up there? A bad wind storm?

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 09:30 am:

Nancy, a beaver chewed through a fiber optic cable. Seriously. :)

PLEASE JOIN ME IN WISHING MY OLDER BROTHER, UNCLE MIKE, HAPPY #58 BIRTHDAY! I NEED YOU PASTY FOLKS TO TELL HIM HE SHOULD BE AT L.B. IN NOV. FOR DEER HUNTING, HE SHOT HIS 11 POINTER A FEW YEARS AGO AND NEEDS TO BE U.P. THERE WITH MARTY AND ME, SO PLEASE HELP ME CONVINCE HIM! WE NEED TO CARRY ON THE "FAMILY TRADITION"!
Mikie, dad,(GN) would expect you there. Ship ur stuff to me, and fly up here, you can ride with me, and if ur lucky, I'll let you use dad's 30/30.

ANYWAY, HAPPY BDAY OLD MAN!

LOVE, UR BRO.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 11:52 am:

Say it isn't so, Uncle Mike; how can you possibly let your younger brother go to L.B. without you?? Don’t you know he has had a traumatic experience in the past couple months and is not fully capable of defending himself against those mean ole’ Keweenaw deer. Heck, if those deer find this out, they will take Uncle Chuck out behind the woodshed and have their way with him. How could anyone live with that thought...... So see, he really does need you there with him and Marty. Plus, you would get to use “da turdy-turdy”; how cool is that??

Oh, and Happy B-Day, Uncle Mike!!!!!!! ;-)

P.S.: So if Uncle Mike doesn’t go to L.B. Uncle Chuck, can I be your adopted member of the family during deer season?? I won’t even make many NMU jokes while there.... J

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 12:41 pm:

Marianne,
We are ok. Magnolia is about 18 or so miles north of us. Still, it isn't very nice when you look out your windows and see this from yesterday:

What a great time that would be! All of us Pasty friends hangin' with Uncle Chuck at his hunting camp!! I can see it now!!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 02:29 pm:

Happy Birthday Uncle Mike! You be sure to skedaddle UP to the hunting camp this fall! Hate to see Uncle Chuck bummed out! A 30/30 huh? I have shot Bob's 232, does that count?

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 03:00 pm:

Happy Birthday, Uncle Mike!
And yeah, you gotta get up to LB in November. Even if you're not hunting, the possibilities are endless. I seem to remember reading once that 95% of the Keweenaw is actually unexplored for mineral wealth (Capt. Paul, please confirm or revise). But hey, even if it's only 15% unexplored, you could be out walking through the woods and stub your toe on a shiny nugget that seems far too heavy for its size. Yep, that's right, you could be the discoverer of The Great Little Betsy Platinum/Iridium Field. But you gotta be there. So whaddaya say?

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 04:10 pm:

Uncle Mike,You really should go up with our nice brother Chuck & companions. I'm sure you'd forget all of your problems right away & have alot of fun. Sounds like there isn't a whole lot of hunting that goes on. You will have great meals, that's for sure. you'll have to go to the Gay Bar for some brews, fun & great hamburgers. Then stop at the Clffview for a foot long (hotdog) that is really tasty. Don't forget to go out of your way a little & go to the Ambassador, out of his world tradional sub & pizza. YuM!!! It's worth the drive. Then the guys will chaffeuar you around in the woods & you just wait for that buck to come!!! You can relax in a nice hot suana. You do know if you don't go, you'll be kickin yourself in the rear later, listening to the guys tell their stories!!!! Ya got just a little time so just go to it. Ya know you're not gettin any younger!!!! lol By the way, HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!! :) How'd I do Uncle Chuck??????? LOL

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 04:11 pm:

Happy Birthday Uncle Mike.

The Ontonagon Labor Day Fest was a great time. Never saw so many "cherry" old cars ever. They actually had several GTOs, my car. (I know, no one likes them, oh well, I do.)

Kind of chuckling today; The last power outage was caused by a squirrel and today the 911 outage was caused by a beaver.

Woke up to 41° this morning. Temps rose to the low 70s and had to put my sweatshirt on, again. :) I'm trying to rough it.

By Cheryl Rozman (Cotton) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 04:13 pm:

I meant that you (Mike) have a little time to think about going on the trip. It didn't sound right the way I put it on the last message Sorrry!!!!

Capt, hope that fire stays away from you. We're thinnking of you.

By C Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 04:23 pm:

Happy Birthday Uncle Mike! Just remember, no one ever cries on their death bed that they wished they could have spent more time at work. Go hunting with the family!! It's OK "to drink, play cards and shoot the bull and never shoot no deer." Once that time is spent, you can't get it back again. Spend it with your family and make some good memories. Go, have fun! Your family wants you there.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 05:04 pm:

Thanks Cheryl, although your mention of a submarine traditional has me longing to be in the Ambassador right now. Oh well, 5 weeks and I'll be there enjoying one, but who's counting.....

The last I checked the fire is 30% contained, so at least they are making progress; however, it is very smokey here.

By Hollidays (Hollybranches) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 05:29 pm:

Best of luck to you Captain Paul and Dr. Nat. Stay safe.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 06:08 pm:

Thanks, Hollidays!!

No change in the status of the fire; still only 30% contained and it is actively moving south. It has burned 5,000 acres and 20 homes with over 200 in its path. I doubt it will make it here; we're about 15 miles from the fire front but the smoke outside is making it almost impossible to be outside any length of time. To give you an idea, the photo below was taken about 5 minutes ago:

Happy Birthday, Uncle Mike!!!

The 2010 picture reminds me of the day we were at Misery Bay last August. Oh my gosh!! I had to hang on to my 8 year old grandson with all my might. But what a fun time that was.

Capt. you and Nat stay safe.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 08:10 pm:

UC...what is Uncle Mike going to do when you smoke him and drop that 12 pointer? Besides, who will help you down the stairs and who will get the Scotts T.P. when you run out? Some advise...be sure to bring some newspapers just in case and try to get the Wall Street Journal, if possible. I personally find it noticeably softer and much more absorbent. Only, try to avoid the comic section, it's just too hard explaining that one to the wife.
Oh yeah, and Happy B-Day U.M.! 11 points is okay, but you want to end up with an even number.

Capt and Dr. Nat...be safe. I watched a video today of the TX fire racing across an open landscape and I could not believe how fast it was moving.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 08:37 pm:

Nice pics, by the way. Recognized Big Spring right away.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 09:13 pm:

We're all thinking of you Capt. Paul and Dr. Nat. Stay safe!

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 - 10:52 pm:

Thanks for all your comments and bday wishes to my bro Uncle Mike, if he doesn't come U.P. now, he's a MTU/U.P. trader! lol N Marty and I will get the venison!

On a serious note, Capt./DR.Nat, hope your safe and wishing you all the best during these trying times, if it get's too hot, get out of there, I'll give you the keys to L.B.

Alex, lol, Marty has the Scotts TP, so not to worry, check out our pic on my profile. Pine trees and fresh air for Marty are better than natural fiber, lol

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 - 06:08 pm:

Uncle Chuck, I am an uncle Mikie, willing to sub for your brother. Have not been hunting since all my hunting partners have gone to the happy hunting grounds above. Well not all of them one for sure didn't make that cut. Happy birthday uncle Mike keep the tradition going. Capt. and Doc. thinking of you and hope you stay safe. Precous and I just spent a few days on the river watching the ships go by. Great state park at Algonac Michigan.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Wednesday, September 7, 2011 - 08:57 pm:

I love that state park, Mikie. My husband and I, as well as our dear
departed dog, Rusty, have spent good times there watching the
boats go by and hiking the trails.
