Where there's a will, there's a way... isn't that how the old saying goes? Well, for this chipmunk, it looks like the 'way' didn't turn out quite like he had hoped. Donna MacIntosh must have had a good chuckle when she spotted this guy in her bird feeder, stuck up like that. She said that she first spotted him on the ground standing up, surveying all the spilled seeds, after she had dropped a feeder. She figures that first photo was his "happy dance." That second shot though...that's a classic for sure. Just goes to prove that when you're feeding the birds, you're feeding other critters without even knowing it. That is until they pull a stunt like that and get stuck up in the feeder. My question is this, Donna... how'd you get him out? :->

Love that 2nd picture, lol!!!! Serves the little stinker right. Chipmunks are so darn brave. They don't scare easily. I have some out here that will just continue on eating the bird feed with me right there. My dad used to call them gophers. We'd tell him that they were chippies to everybody else, but he would argue just for argument's sake. Drove us crazy, lol!!

Love the pictures!

We have to love chipmunks not only because they are cute and little, but also because they are the elementary school mascot for the school down the street from us that all three of my sons went to. I've never seen a chipmunk in a bird feeder: it's usually a squirrel. Around here, chipmunks aren't a problem, but squirrels are a royal pain, with our dogs, etc! The squirrels taunt our dogs like crazy.

Well look on the bright side...... at least he (or she) won't be a tasty morsel for a predator anytime soon. J

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 08:31 am:

All I had to do was open the door...and that thing backed right out of that feeder and off he went. The first pic...honestly...I swear I could hear the thing cheering! LOL "Happy Dance, Happy Dance....WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE...we are gonna eat good today!"

Love watching the critters...the chippies take the whole seed away...the squirrels break them open and leave the hulls laying all over...I'd rather feed the chippies...they clean up the mess!

I live in a flat/4 apt building...all ground level...on the far side where the chipmunks run to the woods and back to fill up...there is a well worn path into the ground...and does that crack me up too! It's a busy "street". LOL

two or three years ago we had a tame one here at work and would come into our building for sunflower seeds. "ralph" got to the point where he'd sit in my hand to get his seeds. we knew it was always him by the little notch in the tip of his right ear. as an experiment one time, we let him fill up his cheek pouches just to see how many he could fit ~ and these were the bigger variety ~ he got 23 stuffed in before he trundled off.

later the same summer my wife & i visited the cemetary outside of copper harbor, we saw an old chippie, first one that i ever saw that was literally a "gray-beard".

I don't bother the chipmunks in my yard until they get in my shop. I keep a live trap in there and capture them. I then take them to the park and release them. Precious says they beat me home. So I have taken to spraying their tails with orange paint so I know if the same ones are coming back. The other day a park visitor was telling me there are a new variety of chippie with orange tails in the park. Last year I relocated over fifty of them. This year only about twenty. We now have a hawk and an orange cat roaming the neighborhood. I think that is the reason for the decrease in population.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 10:14 am:

Yeah, chipmunks are cute but they're also very destructive. Just like moles, they will tunnel around your house or outbuildings and destroy the foundations. They've been doing that around an old/unused garage on our property. They will also tunnel under your asphalt driveways. Even though my cat is housebound, there are several other cats in the neighborhood, so the chippie population has dwindled over the years. Mikie, that's funny about the 'new variety' of orange-tailed chippies. :)

Mikie...orange-tailed chippies, orange cat? I hate to ask, but what color is Precious now?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 12:11 pm:

I believe the real question is how big are the chipmunks in Berkley if you can't tell them apart from a cat?? ;-)

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 02:31 pm:

Cute!

By Gordon Jelsma (Gjelsma) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 04:24 pm:

I am with Shirley. They are destructive. I kill them whenever I can. There is a great chili recipie on the internet that uses Chipmunk. I don't like to see any of God's creations go to waste.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 07:11 pm:

Now, Gordon, I have my limits....I may try to kill 'em but I "ain't" eatin' 'em. ;-P

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 07:45 pm:

I think Gordon might be on to something here. Chip-Chili, Chip-beef, Munk-kabobs. Are ya feelin me yet?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 08:30 pm:

Alex, Precious is green, not orange. Actually she is 100% Polish. No Irish at all. I have dispensed some of the chippies also. Threw them on the street and the hawk gets them in seconds. He glides down to the street and the whole time he watches me. Picks them up on one sweep. I prefer painting their tails and moving them out of the neighborhood. Not brave enough or dumb enough to try to paint Precious. Can't run anymore. Even with her bad leg she is faster then me.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 08:32 pm:

I had that prob w chipmunks tunneling all along the foundation. Last straw was when one (or some) got in the wall of son's bedroom and drove him crazy. I put a few mothballs around the foundation, and they chose to live and dig elsewhere, as did a mole (or something) that had been making big holes in the same area.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 08:34 pm:

I didn't paint Jimmie the fat white cat either. The cat came orange. He likes me, and loves trying to trip me. Named him Sam. He has a collar on him. Did you know all orange cats are male? Being part Irish I think someone should breed a green cat.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, September 23, 2011 - 08:56 pm:

No no Mikie, someone should breed a blue cat with a white Saint Andrews Cross; what say you, Alex??

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Saturday, September 24, 2011 - 07:49 am:

Sound like a good mascot for St. Andrews golf course.

By Sdcferndale (Sdcferndale) on Sunday, September 25, 2011 - 10:42 am:

We had a chippy that resided in the old barn on the family farm outside of Dollar Bay. The only one that chippy would go to was my dad and only him.
