There are some things you begin to take for granted when you see them quite often and one of those things here in the Keweenaw, is a Bald Eagle. Today’s first two shots are from Robert C. Wetton and he spotted this eagle in Houghton, near Kirkish Furniture. RCW recounts that when he worked at CMX airport in the late 60’s, there was a guy from the Audubon Society that flew in several times, because he heard there may be some eagles UP here. They sure have made a comeback, as they’re a more common site now-a-days.

Greta Jones has a couple good shots of eagles, too. I really like the third photo, looking down on the eagle as it feasts on a fish it must have just snatched out of Lake Superior. Then the last photo shows a different variety, called a Golden Eagle. It seems to be precariously perched on that branch, as it looks like it may be a dead one and could snap off under the weight of that large bird.

Beautiful...majestic birds....have you ever watched them kettling from Brockway? They play on the air currents...these birds give me goosebumps! GREAT pictures everyone!

We saw an eagle on the way home from Ashland on Sunday. Always eciting to see one. They're so gorgeous!!

I had one scare the bejeebers out of me last week here at Lake Erie Metropark as it left the tree above my head. Last year there was said to be a tree in that area with 6 to 7 of them on daily. In the fall a raptor club sponsored by Detroit Edison counts birds daily to see the north to south migration patterns. Yes they sometimes are seen kettling.....

Makes me hungry for Walleye!

Lovin' that eagle! Thanks, Bob!

Are you sure that is a golden eagle - or an immature bald eagle without its' white feathers yet. Young bald eagles stay dark for a couple of years

Excellent Photos!, thanks

The last eagle must be a member of The Hair Club for Raptors.

By Donna (Donna) on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 - 10:04 am:

Not just a member! He's the president! :D

...at least he's not bald. (or is he?)

Okay, now you've got this amateur linguist stumped.
Can you point me at a definition of "kettling"?

I can only find three on-line dictionaries that even mention the word, and apparently none with a remotely relevant definition!

FRNash, Type in "birds kettling" and there will be many references for you to check out.

I should add here that my son Rob was shooting some shots too as we drove up. He got a few with several crows that were harrasing the Eagle. The Eagle didn't even flinch

Bingo! See Wikipedia: Kettle (birds).
Thanks Notroll, I guess my earlier search wasn't up to my usual level of diligence. <grin>

Or here in mining country could we call it a "kibble"? Or maybe that what I should could call the swirling formation our three dogs make when they circle the dish as I scoop their food into it.... ;-)

Nice eagle pics. I saw what may have been a golden on a carcass on M-26 near M-38 on Sunday. I sorta hate to see eagles on roadkill because being bigger and slower many become roadkill themselves. Still neat to see, though.

Good pics of the U.S.'s National Bird.

The 'bird' in the last picture is what we saw at Tamrack Waterworks last year. Took a few pictures of it. Sure was a big bird. A lady with a small dog walked by us and the eagle turned around and spotted the little dog, we told her to keep an eye on the dog and pointed out the eagle in the tree. Every thing that moved on the beach, it kept on eye on it. Sure is a beautiful bird.

Thanks for posting my pictures, Mary. I think the last one is a Golden.

By Greta Jones (Urbanescapees) on Thursday, May 19, 2011 - 11:55 am:

BTW, the eagle eating the fish actually did just grab it out of the lake. He was there feasting for quite a while, and believe me, he wasted nothing. All that was left was some clean bones.
This was an awesome sight to watch, that you don't see very often.
