Today's first photo from Susan Hooker is quite the find, for sure. Look at how delicate that icy shell is, having just slipped off one of Lake Superior's shoreline rocks and you can see another one right behind it that's loosened its grip, too. If Susan had gotten to this spot an hour later, that ice shell might have been melted, blown or washed away. Perfect timing.

Susan's remaining shots show the rest of the story, as far as the thicker ice, where the Big Lake has been splashing her waves. With the warming temperatures, it won't be long before the shoreline will once again be rocks and sand, depending on which Lake Superior shore you visit.

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Friday, April 8, 2011 - 10:57 am:

That may be a Gulleygalloo bird egg shell in the first picture.

By Marge Roberts (Fluffyyellow) on Friday, April 8, 2011 - 11:58 am:

Is a gulleygalloo anything like a snipe? Couldn't find it via Google.

It's incredible how the ice holds the rocks in a 'shelf' as in the 2nd shot, and then suspends icicles from that. Nature's art never fails to impress!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, April 8, 2011 - 02:31 pm:

Nicey icy.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Friday, April 8, 2011 - 11:44 pm:

At first glance I thought that was a jellyfish (a cabbage head) washed up among the rocks! Whew you had me really worried about "global warming" !

I have been putting my VHS movies onto DVD, and I came across a movie that was dated April 10 2003 or 2004, and we were on our way home from here. It was snowing like crazy in this movie, sure was pretty. Stopped at that rest stop that has a waterfall you can walk into the woods to see and there is a little wood bridge to walk over and it was snowing and the water was running, it was pretty to see all that on the movie. I snowed all the way to Marquette.

I meant to say 'it' snowed all the way to Marquette, but, I am quite sure ya' figured it out.;O)
