Nature creates it's own art form, using snow, sand and wind, on the shores of Lake Superior. Melanie Hakala Rossi was in Eagle River on a blustery day and noticed these beautiful sand art formations in the snow. All it took was some exposed beach sand, drifts of sifting snow and a few good gusts of wind to combine those two, creating nature's own canvas for some abstract art. The contrast of the white snow and brown sand combined perfectly, layering so well into a one of a kind design. Sometimes it's those simple things in life that turn out the best.

Don't forget, the second annual Copperdog 150 sled dog race events in Calumet, are taking place starting today and ending on Sunday. For more information on the events scheduled, click here: Copperdog 150 Schedule of Events.

Across the room that first picture looks like a Hilltop sweetroll. Yumm.

By Doug Walters (Dawalters) on Friday, March 4, 2011 - 07:56 am:

Wow, that does look like a Hilltop sweetroll.

It's not unusual when we are leaving the Copper Country headed back to Ohio, that we will stop at the Hilltop, grab a bite and of course get a sweetroll. It's now almost become an ongoing joke that my wife will say, "Let's pick up an extra one for Dad", my elderly father-in-law. Needless to say the man has never laid eyes on a Hilltop sweetroll. The extra sweetroll never makes it back to the bridge, much less Ohio.

Very cool pictures! I have always thought the Keweenaw was a work of art. Beautiful!

Did someone say "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory"?

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Friday, March 4, 2011 - 08:15 am:

Hi
Thanks for the winter shoreline pictures over the past couple weeks. Because of family stuff, I haven't been able to get to the shores of the Great Lakes this winter.

Here's a shot from just a few miles away from Eagle River, a natural ice bridge in shallow water that reminded me of a shark's jaw.

The Yogi understood that the true nature of existence is impermanence..
Indestructible mountains versus temporary snow, sand and wind creations...the stars have seen many such mountains and art forms come and go.

It's interesting how nature's elements can be so artistic.

Our local ice cream shop thanks you. When I showed
these shots to the Fam, the sudden urge for a taste
of ice cream proved irresistible, and it was time
for a quick outing! They didn't have a chocolate
swirl, unfortunately, but chocolate chip substituted
nicely. :D
