Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Monday, February 28, 2011 - 08:33 am:

In our continuing tradition, we set aside this last day of the month, to honor the memory of those that have gone on before us. Today we remember:

Sarah N. Bottrell
Mary Jo Crawford
Virginia (Ginny) Koepel
Jack Stevens
Roy Tuovila
Servicemen and women who have given their all

Deserving a special mention, is the lady at the top of the list, Sarah N. Bottrell, who lived to the age of 106, residing in Marquette. In a Proclamation by the Mayor and the Marquette City Commission on October 12, 2010, they recognized Sarah's community service. It was noted that "she was an amazing and active person who has lived through and experienced most of the significant events of the last century including: World War I and II from the Upper Peninsula home-front, the Great Depression, and the influenza epidemic that killed over 675,000 people in America." That's quite a span of history to have lived through. Rest her soul and all those who have left us this month.

Special thanks to Aladino Mandoli for the beautiful sunrise to remember our friends and loved ones with. Please feel free to add the names of those you hold near and dear.

I normally don't post on this day, but one individual who should be honoured is the last U.S. World War 1 Veteran who passed away yesterday of natural causes. Corporal Frank W. Buckles served with the U.S. Army 1st Fort Riley Casual Detachment out of Kansas. He enlisted in the Army at the early age of 16. During the war, Buckles served in England and France, driving ambulances and motorcycles. After the Armistice in 1918, Buckles escorted prisoners of war back to Germany. For his service during World War I, Buckles received (from the U.S. Government) the World War I Victory Medal, the Army of Occupation of Germany Medal, and qualified for four Overseas Service Bars. In addition, French president Jacques Chirac awarded him France's Légion d'honneur (Legion of Honour).

Even up until his final days, Corporal Buckles was still giving media interviews about his experiences in the War. Corporal Buckles just turned 110 on February 1 and some say he was the oldest verified World War I veteran in the world, and the second-oldest male military veteran in the world. There are several websites and documentaries devoted to his life, and all are worth reading and/or watching....

I missed yesterday but I wanted to add a message regarding my sister in law, Ginny Koepel. The world and our family lost a most wonderful person when she passed. She was my friend and my sister and I loved her so much. I will miss you forever, Ginny

The community lost a great leader in February, John "Jack" Stevens. I may be biased because he is my father but beyond being the best father he was also the father of snowmobiling in the Copper Country and a visionary man. A number of times he has been on Pasty before and each time many people have shared their memories. Soon I will begin to gather stories so that this summer we can have a really big celebration.
