Melanie Hakala Rossi seems to have taken a cruise around the Copper Country, looking for some interesting photo ops and it looks like she was quite successful. You can never go wrong with a snapshot of the Church of the Assumption (a.k.a. Phoenix Church), especially with the backdrop of the snow-covered landscape around it. Did you know it was originally located in the nearby mining community of Cliff and was then, St. Mary's Church? You can find a bit of this historical church's history over on the Keweenaw County Historical Society webpage.

On to Melanie's second photo... she spotted this most unusual use of snow, making the house look like an igloo of sorts. My guess is that the owner figured he/she would take advantage of the natural insulating value of the packed snow, although I think I'd have left a bit more of the windows showing.

The last photo is of the Lac La Belle Post Office and boy, oh, boy, it sure has grown throughout the years. I'm not sure who maintains this set-up, but it sure is a great way to have all the mailboxes at uniform heights and within easy reach for mailman Brad. Maybe a case of yooper ingenuity... You've got mail!

Gorgeous photos. What a fine start to the morning.

Working with the snow like that to insulate your home really does save you a lot of money. I remember years ago, being told Snow IS traction and Snow IS insulation....and it sure works.

LOVE the mailbox photo...HI mailman Brad!!!

The building in the second photo could also serve as a meat locker.

Loved them all, thanks Melanie!

btw: it's 68 degrees in Tampa, FL with todays' high expected to hit 80

2nd picture, pank that show....(only in The Keweenw) In Monroe county we are having a season of record snowfalls and may hit 60" for the year.

Nice Photos,
The Phoenix church is where all the family memorial services are held it seems like, at least on my mother's side (the Vuolle clan).
Your right Mary, that's quite a rack of mailboxes, it does seem to be growing.

Wonderful photos makes me wish I was there to explore the area too. Almost like a fairyland of imagination.

We did the insulation trick with snow back in the early 70's behind Centennial Heights one year and we found as Mary says the windows left uncovered are the key to sanity! Even with a shrew hunting mice on the far side of the kitchen window it just didn't quite work out. On another note the snow blower blew the remote temp. sensor off the tree we had it mounted on and it has been reporting a steady 28 to 30 degrees from the depths of its new home in a snowbank waiting to be found in the spring . That's been consistent over six weeks, now, and quite a serious bit of insulation from the lows of two weeks ago.

I tried to get a message to Uncle Chuck but his e-mail is out
of date. I walked to school every day with Cleo Voulle and
would love to get in touch with him.

We have six weddings booked at the church for 2011 and
usually have one or two memorial services. Our schedule of
special events is listed on our web page,
www.keweenawhistory.org and the church is available for self
viewing from 9 - 5 from May to October.

My email address on my profile is correct btw.

Good pics, especially the Church one.

That Lac La Belle mailbox pic would be a good one for RFD-TV to use in some of their promotions!
