Late fall is the time of year when things begin to quiet down here in the U.P. Not as much traffic and fewer visitors out and about, but for those that brave the cooler temperatures, it's still a wonderland of beauty. David Roberts has two examples from the Munising area of the tranquil and beautiful scenery that abounds, even without the leaves decorating the trees. The river flowing into Lake Superior in David's first shot is one he called Salt River, but I wasn't able to find any information about it, so if you have any information about location and such, feel free to share it with us all. The second photo of Scott Falls is a familiar one to me, as it's located right alongside the southern end of M28. You can actually view this falls right from your car, but I'd suggest you get out and explore around it, as it is one of the few falls you can walk right behind or even wade in the small pool of water in the warmer months. With winter impending, I'm wondering if this waterfall freezes over when the temperatures drop below freezing?

Greetings:

Think that David meant "Sand" river?

Two very pleasant and serene scenes. That is one very determined pine tree hanging on for dear life. It always amazes me to see pines and cedars growing on the barest of soil.:)

Fantastic photos!

The first picture reminds me of the song by America called Riverside:

Living on the riverside taking it all in my stride
Living on the riverside, I'm taking life like a big long ride
You stay on your side and I'll stay on mine
You take what you want and I'll take the sunshine

Thanks, JTinChicago for the correction on the name of the river! I was probably having a "senior moment" when I titled that shot. Scott Falls is just east of Au Train on the south side of M28. Watch closely or you will miss it (as I often do)

Dave...thanks for the info. I have passed by this location a hundred times and never saw the sign.

Mary, yes, Scott Falls does freeze over in the winter, in fact, rather early, since it's so small. When I was commuting to Detroit in late fall or early spring (and once right after Christmas), I frequently passed it when it was frozen solid. Neat sight. It's also pretty cool early in the spring, during the runoff.

Scenic photos. Thank you.

Both very beautiful photos. Thank you!

I thought to myself Salt River? I know of no river of that name in the U.P?? Perhaps in Arizona! I just stopped at Scott Falls recently and like the name for some reason? The drives in the U.P during the fall are wonderful. I love the coast drives. AuTrain and the Rock River area are nice also.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Friday, November 12, 2010 - 08:17 pm:

scott falls frozen, now there's a treat. scott falls on a 90 degree day - go stand behind it where its 60 degrees. good stuff, one of my favorite UP stops AND "FACE IN THE ROCK" just across m-28 !!

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Friday, November 12, 2010 - 08:19 pm:

oh yes Mary, it freezes into a HUGE icicle, like 10-15 feet in circumference.

By Jim (Keweenawpress) on Friday, November 12, 2010 - 08:37 pm:

There *are* two Salt Rivers in Michigan. One in the Thumb and one by Midland. The Copper Country connection to the one near Midland (Sanford, actually) is that Douglass Houghton helped establish the first state salt well near the Salt River. The dude got around, eh? (There is a nice state historical marker there, BTW)

By dan belo (Djbelo) on Friday, November 12, 2010 - 09:36 pm:

I ALWAYS THOUGHT , MOVING WATER WONT FREEZE. THERES A SPRING BEHIND ALLOUEZ WITH ONLY A TRICKLE, YET NEVER FREEZES IN THE WINTER.--??

By dan belo (Djbelo) on Friday, November 12, 2010 - 09:43 pm:

also the springs at Centenial Heights or Traprock valley never freeze. ????

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Saturday, November 13, 2010 - 01:02 am:

Jim (Keweenawpress): Do you mean the Salt River that is in Macomb county that flows thru New Baltimore and out into Lake St. Clair? Or is there another in the thumb somewhere?

By Dave Roberts (Shutterbug) on Saturday, November 13, 2010 - 11:29 am:

Russemmons -- Guess my memory hiccup engaged a few other brains to puzzle over what the river is really named! I'm very familiar with the Salt River in Macomb County. I cross that river more often than the one in question in the UP. Anyway, I bow to inquisitive minds and thank them for the "good catch" Oh, and I retitled my picture! (As final verification I shall check very carefully when I cross "over the river and through the woods" on my way UP to Houghton for Turkey Day) ;>)

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Saturday, November 13, 2010 - 06:16 pm:

Dave Roberts: We cross the Macomb Salt River often also. I'm betting you cross it over I94? Even though we are just east of Macomb county in St. Clair county, our road crosses the Salt River!
Your above great pic whatever is the name of that river is sure much more scenic then any around here!

By Jim (Keweenawpress) on Sunday, November 14, 2010 - 06:46 am:

Yah, I meant the Salt River in the Macomb area. Its sorta Thumbish, eh?

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Sunday, November 14, 2010 - 01:03 pm:

Jim--yes Macomb & St. Clair countys are considered the bottom of the thumb.
