Most Sunday's here at Pasty Central we feature a Shoebox Memory from the past 100+ years in the U.P. But today we just relax and enjoy the sun and fun from a much more recent photo by Dorothy Jamison. Our thanks to all the kids for dressing up in dirt to give us all a smile.

Have a good week :o)

I'm sure these pictures will start a whole lot of shoebox memories playing in geezer minds all over the country. I remember being there, especially after too long a stay in the big lake. I think I'd have to color myself with blue lips and fingernails from the cold as well as the sepia overall of times past.

Not as cold as these guys, I bet.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Sunday, July 18, 2010 - 09:08 am:

I remember doing all that, too (buried in sand and leaves, at least).

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Sunday, July 18, 2010 - 09:42 am:

Fun pictures!! Glad to see the children are lying down in the sand and not buried standing up as it first appeared as the top photo was opening up.:) And yeah, Richard (Notroll), I imagine that warm sand feels good after a dip in the lake!brrrrr

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, July 18, 2010 - 10:18 am:

How fun!!!! They all look like they're having a blast! Good for them!

Isn't it wonderful that there are kids who know how to have (non-electronic)fun. And such good memories for later.

By Helen Marie Chamberlain (Helen) on Sunday, July 18, 2010 - 11:54 am:

Oh, how well I remember doing this as a young girl...burying in the sand, leaves, and snow..think it was a "throwback" to being in the "womb". Wonderful pictures, thanks!

Re: Day in History
One of those Michigan regiments was the 27th Michigan which was composed of mainly Copper Country men. In company C, one of these fellows was Anton Gipp. Anton was the progenitor of the Gipp family of the Copper Country and George's Grandfather. The 27th Michigan formed as a result of the Lincoln's July 1862 call for recruits. The regiment was in combat from June 1863 to the end in April 1865. It was also one the few regiments to serve both on in the West (Kentucky and Tennessee)and with the Army of the Potomac in Virginia. The 27th was part of 9th (Burnside's) Crops and was attached to the Army of the Potomac in time to participate in Grant's campaigns in Virginia. Anton Gipp was wounded at the "Angle" during the battle of Spotsylvania Courthouse, survived, and stayed with the 27th until it was mustered out in August 1865; he was a sergeant. Anton was in his 40's while in the army which makes his record all the more remarkable. George maybe the more famous, but Anton certainly was a hero in his own right.
The 27th Michigan was involved in 29 "engagements" and suffered a 63% casualty rate. Coming up for a Day in History is July 30th 1864 when the 27th participated in the infamous Battle of the Crater at Petersburg, VA.

Love the pics! Remember being that free and only having to think about doing something fun on a hot summer day? I can almost hear the giggles.
