Anyone who has grandkids, knows how much fun they are and Mary Schmitt is no exception. When her little grandson, Alex was over recently, she had him out exploring the flowers in the neighborhood and they found these lupines that are as tall as he is. I think he's trying to pick some for Grandma in that first shot. :->
After he'd had enough of those tall flowers looking him in the eye, Alex decided it was time to check out the ducks that were walking across Grandma and Grandpa's yard. Oh, what fun things little ones can find to do when they're outside playing in the Keweenaw, no assembly required.

I was so tempted to stop somewhere on our drive to and from there, and dig up some white and pink lupines. All we have out here are the purple ones. I love them. They're so pretty.

By Yooperguide (Huntandfish) on Saturday, June 19, 2010 - 05:25 pm:

No can do. Got to watch when you dig up the Lupines. Here's why;

"Why not just dig up a wild lupine whose color I want?" There are several reasons. While this may indeed work ocassionally, more commonly it does not. This is because the very worst time to transplant any flower is when it is in bloom. Producing flowers, pollen and seed is expensive for a plant, and it requires all of its stored up resources to do properly. When you dig up a wild lupine, you will invariably be severing many of the large roots it has established over perhaps five to ten years of growth, leaving it with fewer resources than it planned on having when it started to blossom. Since seeds are very important to a plant, the lupine will do all it can to assure the survival of the offspring, to the detriment of the mother plant. This is why so few wild-dug lupines survive to flower a second season.

Please, leave them be.

Did I ever say I was going to do it? No, I did not! I said I was "tempted". That means I'd love to have some of the different colors out here. I wasn't going to do it! Good grief!!

Lupines must go in cycles or something, cause this year, the Keweenaw is BURSTING in purples and pinks and even whites! My dear friend, Tina, and I did a Harbor run a week ago...13 hours/202 miles from Baraga to the Harbor and back, and holy wha man...is it ever a beautiful ride!

I don't know what it's like now, but last week, the roads were covered on both sides in many areas....especially the Bete Gris road. WOW. It's just spectacular!

Go MQT Humane Society! I've been voting too! Perhaps it's time to POWER U.P. THE PASTY???

Mary (Schmitt), if you hadn't written your post I never would have known it was your grandson! How adorable those pictures are and has he grown since I saw him last! I think you missed your calling...should have been a pro photographer.
The lupines are gorgeous this year, especially on the way to Baraga. Thanks for the pics! Love 'em.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Saturday, June 19, 2010 - 08:50 pm:

Mary, Alexander is adorable!! About lupines...I planted some from seed the first year we moved into our home and they were beautiful. Wish they grew wild in our area!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, June 19, 2010 - 08:56 pm:

Donna, it was last week that we saw them too. They were all over the sides of the roads both in Michigan and northern Wisconsin. Gorgeous! Just made you want to go and pick them. I wish they grew wild in my yard, also!

By Morning Glory (Lucylu) on Saturday, June 19, 2010 - 09:19 pm:

Darling pictures! Thanks for posting them. I am waiting for Grandkids...well my kids have to get married and then. About the lupines, my son went away to college and we moved into a home while he was gone that had 6 acres that needed mowing. The first summer he was home he mowed the yard while I was gone to the store. He mowed and weed eated so many flowers! I was in shock. He just didn't get it even after I told him. What's the big deal he said? jeeze. Now he knows what is off limits. I have the neatest yard. Flowers bloom all year. I have a lot of flowering bushes too. I see them often and thank God for them.

When we were little kids, we picked a bouquet of lupines for our Grandma. When it got dark, there was a little moth that came out of each little bud..or whatever they are called! LOL...the bouquet ended up back outside!

And yes Mary...the little man is adorable!
