When summer arrives in the Copper Country, the young artists, with chalk in hand, get out and practice their sidewalk art. Barb Bouwkamp spotted these youngsters busy writing and drawing, decorating the sidewalks in Laurium, with streaks of color. The kids look so intent on creating their artwork, they didn't seem to notice Barb was snapping photos of them. There's just something special about watching kids use their imagination, especially when they're out in the great outdoors here UP North!

How great to see these budding artists. Go for it kids. Hope you're encouraged to try all kinds of new ways to expressive yourselves. There's a whole world out there! At first I was encouraged to think the kids were playing hopscotch. Now there's a simple but fun game. Do kids play that any more? And how about "Jacks"? That was my best game.

Great kid photos, Barb! I love them all, especially the middle
one. Have you been hobnobbin' with Brita?

Another one, Kay Moore, I wonder if kids still play is 'marbles.'

Kay, I thought of hopscotch too! In the summer when I was growing up in Kingsford, my neighborhood friends and I would play hopscotch and jacks every day. Also we would do the all time favorite pastime, we would jump rope-double ropes too at times. Marbles was the game that the neighborhood boys would play; girls would be allowed to play only if they had snake eye marbles. Course, the rule was that they would only play if it were for keeps. Thanks for the photos!

Hey, I used to play Marbles all the time as a kid, and that wasn't that long ago. Some might say (Mikie comes to mind) that I'm still a kid!! J
