Good Morning! 2008
Close Second
Apparently Theresa edited her original post based on Marianne's note. Early Bird teamwork.

Congratulations, Theresa! Oops to me: that's what I get for trying to look at this without my morning tea!

What about the tree laying on the ground on the right hand side of the 2003 photo...obviously a canoe in the making, don't-cha-know :)

Unrelated to the photo's today, there is an article on Captain Phil from Deadliest Catch on AOL.(I think its part of the rotating news thing) I bring this up because many of us commented on his death. I just thought some of you might be interested in reading it. Thanks and I really like the opening picture of the giant fish sign. It looks like its says "smoked ice" I thought it was kind of amusing.

Supposingly tomorrow night on The Discovery Channel there is a televised show about Capt. Phil Harris. Our webtv system is not sophisticated to bring up the exact details of the airing on line, can anyone do some investigating please? Thankyou!

By Dale Beitz (Dbeitz) on Friday, February 19, 2010 - 09:33 am:

The TV Guide web site (www.tvguide.com/listings) shows a Deadliest Catch marathon starting at noon Saturday and running through at least midnight. They don't indicate a specific show that's a tribute to Capt. Phil, but maybe they're planning to do brief bits during commercial breaks. They're showing American Loggers Friday evening. I also checked the Discovery web site and don't see anything there about a tribute show.

The grouse reminds me of my favorite poem which I'd like to share. It's by George Dillon (1906-1968) who graduated from the U.of Chicago. He became asso. ed.of "Poetry" magazine and won a Pulitzer for his collection of poems, "The Flowering Stone." The title is "Memory of Lake Superior." I have the poem framed along with a grouse feather I found ---
"I know a country of bright anonymous beaches
Where the sand may sleep unprinted till it is stone.
Granite grows loud among the hills and ditches
Of the blown water when the water is blown."
****
Up on the mountain the sky is everywhere,
The lake fallen hugely underfoot as if
Into the bottom of a well of air,
The island upon it little as a leaf.
****
The woods are dark with the rank lace of hemlock and pine,
Beech, birch, and balsam, and the shadow of these.
There are mushrooms, and thimbleberries sweeter than wine,
And a far noise of wind in the tops of the trees.
****
"That country was all the knowledge I shall ever learn;
It was all the wisdom I shall ever have.
It was there I looked for the driftwood boughs that burn
In colors like the memory of a wave.
***
It was there I looked along the forest floor
For the gray feather of the grouse's wing.
It was there I learned to look for nothing more,
Looking into the sea-blue eyes of spring."

Nice poem...reminds me of a verse from the Gospel of St Thomas:
"Split a piece of wood, I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there."

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Friday, February 19, 2010 - 02:01 pm:

Thankyou Dale! A co-worker mentioned this earlier this week, perhaps she took a marathon and confused it with a tribute.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Friday, February 19, 2010 - 02:44 pm:

Great pictures.

By Deb L. (Lakegirl) on Friday, February 19, 2010 - 07:52 pm:

Bobbygirl and everyone else, yes there is a 15 hour Deadliest Catch marathon tommorrow, the Discovery Channel is hoping to air a tribute possible in April. I did some digging and found this on Popeater late today--sorry it took so long to get back on it, its been a busy day.
