What about 2006 and 2007 too? That's a lady hummingbird in 2006, and the Water Lily - she's a mighty nice boat.

The 2001 photo has some unusual subject matter in it. If viewed 5,000 years from now, it could be perceived as some ritual to ward off evil spirits.

"Tenacious" could be the title for the '04 photo. That's what's needed to survice along the lakes cliffs! By the way... good news for me! My wonderful grandson Jason of Freeprot Il. area is arriving home from Afganastan tonight! Now the tears are of joy of his safe trip home!!! Thanks for all the prayers folks, they WERE heard. Praise the Lord

This is a message for the What's UP area(if it will appear there). I live in Oakland Township, Mi. and have great ties to the UP (born in Hancock and left at age three, Tech graduate, visit often) and love the area. For example, my relative Michael Messner came to the Keweenaw area from Germany in 1864 (history books mention him) at the age of 19. He later worked with John Stanton and William Paine concerning the Atlantic Mine (South Pewabic earlier) and Copper Range Railroad. He worked on the construction of the Portage Canal as a young man. Messner was my greatgrandmothers brother. My greatgrandmother also lived in Houghton. I recently joined two UP historical societies and plan, as a hobby, to do greater study of the UP.

My thought is, I would like to join a group in my area which have UP interests social or otherwise. I'm coming to you first before I do my own research. Does anyone know of such a group in the Oakland County area of Michigan? I can be contacted at RusticTerry@Comcast.net (love log homes). Thanks.

Rusticterry The Mike Messener that was a friend of my folks was probably the son of the Messener that arrived about 1864. He was my dad's age. Dad was born in Lake Linden in 1882. The Messeners were a good hard working lot. My Mr. Messener had a lumber company and a coal yard just east of downtown Houghton and a farm at the Portage Entry. Nice people.
