Big Traverse is one of the many gateways to Lake Superior and is a popular place for folks to dock their boats. It's also a good place to launch your boat if you want to head out on Lake Superior for a day of fishing. Barb Bouwkamp snapped a few shots of the river and another of a boat on its way out to the Big Lake from there. We've gone there and put our kayaks in, to paddle up the river, too. You don't have to worry about big waves and you get a neat perspective from the water, that you don't get driving along in a car. So whether you're interested in doing some boating, fishing or you just want to relax and watch the "coming and going" at the launch, this is an ideal spot to do it.

I love Big Traverse. It's such a cozy little place. We swim there every summer, but decided it was just too cold for us this past summer. A tradition gone by the wayside. So sad..........

Very nice place!

I guess if one is from the CC or goes there often, you know where all these places are. Even with a local map so many of these places aren't marked. I have no idea where this is.Especially bays and "points" are foreign to me. Lovely where ever it is.

Thats a pretty spot, never realized so many places were on that river.

We just returned from spending a week on our boat in Copper Harbor. Surprisingly enough, our boat is almost identical to the one in Barb's third picture, except we have a "hard top" on ours. We hit the jackpot for weather UP here last week, that's for sure!

Ms. Katie,
I'm hoping someone else can explain how to get to Big Traverse, as I'm not positive what the names of the roads are...I've been going out there all my life and I've never really paid attention to the names...shame on me! :-)

I don't know how to send a map, but you can get
to Big Traverse a couple of ways. From Lake
Linden, take the Bootjack road to the Rice Lake
road, go along the lake till you come to a Y. stay
left and you will go to Big Traverse, go left at Lake
Superior to the fishing village which is at the
mouth of the Traverse River. OR from Lake
Linden, take the Gay road, 2 1/2 miles after you
pass into Keweenaw county a road on yhour left
(marked with a sign) takes you to Traverse.

actually, the road in to Traverse from the Gay road
is on the right when traveling toward Gay

Mary says: Thanks Jim! I knew someone would come to my rescue. :->

Jim is right. I have been to Big Traverse many times and have watched the fishing tugs leave or arrive. Love the area. Had many a grand time at the Gay Bar.

My Dad, Edwin Erkkila, fished out of Big Traverse on the Twin Disc, with my Uncle Reino. I loved watching the boat come in with all the gulls flying around hoping for a bite to eat!

TO BONNIE HARTMAN;

Do you or your family know a Harry Erkilla of Calumet?
