Brooke Gubacz recently enjoyed some hiking along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Her son Taylor found himself the perfect spot to take a load off his feet and rest a bit from all that hiking. Brooke said he was excited about this natural bench, because he loves rocks. I'm betting he would have liked to take this one home!

The Lake Superior waters have formed a number of unusual formations along this lakeshore near Munising, as you can see in Brooke's second and third photo. Many years of waves have splashed over those rocks, wearing away the stone to reveal the shapes, caves and holes that dot the area.

Today's last photo comes from Rob Ziebell, taken near Castle Rock. Lake Superior acts as a canvas for the artistry of colored kayaks, in this sea of green. Having those kayaks looking so small there in the vastness of the Big Lake, gives you a great perspective of the size of those rocky cliffs that make up the Pictured Rocks.

Oh what fun! We're going to try to head there on Sunday, after we've spent some time in St. Ignace and Mackinac Island. Should be fun. There's just so darn much to see. However, I'd rather take the glass bottom boat than those kayaks, lol.

Superior pictures! Wish I was there too!

We Hiked it and taunted the relatives who took the boat, I believe "wimps" was one of the words thrown out. It was so windy that day and choppy on the water they couldn't get the good pictures so we shared. Two completely different views of the rocks and both beautiful.

By Jeff Kalember (Jeffkal) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 09:31 am:

my favorite spot on earth.

By Cindy, New Baltimore, MI (Cindy) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 09:54 am:

Wow! Great pictures again today! This is also one of my favorite places. The beauty of the rocks on a sunny day is just incredible. Eddy, I followed your link, too. It was very enjoyable but sad because it looks like I'm not going to make it up to the U.P. this summer. At least I can get my U.P. fix every day on the Pasty Cam.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 10:27 am:

Eddy...thanks for the link. Those pics definitely get my UP juices flowing.
Man, if only I had the time.

Mary, That is Miners Castle. Castle Rock overlooks Mackinac.

By Therese (Therese) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 11:20 am:

I haven't hiked the trail in many years, but with a new titanium knee all settled in and happy I may go up there in September for some long day hikes. My body is beyond backpacking, I'm afraid.

Bob is right; that is Miners Castle, a little smaller since a turret fell off a few years back.

Jeff, Alex, Eddyfitz ....you're so right...MY favorite place on earth also! Love any where between Munising and Grand Marais! Usually don't say that out loud so I can keep it to myself. Discovered this place the first time camping in Grand Marais's township campground. My heart is still there! Thanks once again Mary!

By Mary Lorentz (Maryl) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 02:12 pm:

Lovely! I was there last week Tuesday for the 5 p.m. Spray Falls boat excursion. The sun made the rock just glow. Totally awesome. I have great pictures rolling across my screen saver from there, Brockway & Portage Canal. Missing that wonderful air in the U.P. now that I'm back in Texas.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 04:47 pm:

I need 2 visit Pictured Rocks someday.

By Annie (Cabinfive) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 09:30 pm:

I took the Pictured Rocks Boat tour a few years ago. I was amazed
at how close the boat was able to get to the rocks. If you haven't
taken the tour do it! You will remember it for the rest of your life.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 09:52 pm:

We are seriously thinking about doing it this year. We thought about staying in St. Ignace through Sunday night and then driving straight to Lake Linden from there. But we're thinking about leaving on Sunday so we can take that boat tour on Monday. How long is it, Annie?

By Annie (Cabinfive) on Thursday, July 30, 2009 - 10:00 pm:

Check out this link Deb:
www.picturedrocks.com/ScheduleandFees.php.
It says the tour is 2 1/2 to 3 hours...worth every minute. I
remember it going by too fast...

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, July 31, 2009 - 05:39 am:

Thank you, Annie. I will check it out when we get to St. Ignace as we are up and ready to be off. YAYYYYYYYY!!!! We finally got up at our desired time. It is 4:38 our time and we should arrive in St. Ignace by about 3 or 4!!! Happy Trails and you all have a nice day.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, July 31, 2009 - 06:35 pm:

Taylor looks like he just slapped some of his dad's aftershave lotion on his face, or....... that's a very HOT rock he's perched on.:) Great pics!!

By Barbara Whiteside (Bobbeo60) on Thursday, August 6, 2009 - 08:19 pm:

We just returned from the U.P. and our granddaughter LOVED what she calls Grammaw's Lake......we did the Packers shareholder meeting, then to Marquette and Presque Isle Park.....over to Munising and Pictured Rocks then to Mackinac Island. I believe we impressed her with what the U.P. has to offer....she had a great time.
