It's been a long time since we've seen the shores of Gitche Gumee around the Keweenaw, hopefully that should be changing here, shortly. Not to say we won't still get a few flurries before it's all said and done, but we're definitely on the "downside" of winter now. Today's photos from Ashley Stelmack give a good perspective of the melting ice pack, showing us more of Superior's blue waters each day, along with more of the Big Lake's rocky shoreline in the other two photos she provided. It's a sight to see, for sure, when the shores start coming back to life with rocks and driftwood appearing. Time to get your rock-hounding gear gathered up and ready to go!

I would get my gear ready to go if there were any rocks around here!! I guess I will have to wait until summer when the Dr. and I are UP there for a couple weeks to use the rock gear.....

I ran into some folks out at Breakers on Saturday... they were wandering around on those huge snow-and-ice mountains (like in the first photos here). Seeing someone walking on them really put them in scale -- they're HUGE! (Also, I was definitely not willing to walk out on them myself... it IS the melt, after all!)

By Kathyrn Laughlin (Kathyl) on Monday, April 6, 2009 - 08:07 am:

Hi
Dcclark, looking at the thinner ice between them and the shore, I would not walk out on them, either.

Downstate, we are having our spring blizzard, or rather, did last night. My parents in Jackson say there is 6-7 inches there, more like 4 over here in SE Michigan. We're supposed to get 1-3 inches more today. I know, tame stuff compared to the UP; on the other hand, we have the traffic to contend with.

It is nice to see ground and water again, even if its spotty. I'll take the snow over traffic any day.

Bill is over at the ederly couples home shoveling them out. They simply adore Bill and so do I. ;O)

I took these photos right infront of my grandma's house just east of the lighthouse in Copper Harbor. Living in Minocqua, WI, I'm able to go up there for the day pretty often so when I had a day off work last Monday, I took the oppertunity to go see the thaw.

The ice in these photos were not the biggest I've seen...These are only about 10 to 15 feet high. Kathyrn is right, I would NOT be walking out there on those. It was pretty much open water with floating ice chunks infront of them.

The best part was the noise...It was crackling and loud that seemed to echo forever.

Everyone and anyone should very careful about walking on any ice or snow mounds on the big lake now. The 'melt' is on. There's been a poor deer stranded out on an ice float in Copper Harbor for a couple of days now. I saw the pictures this morning on 'ghite@pasty.net'. Hopefully the deer will be able to make a swim for it if he's not too far from shore.

David S. (Yooperdfs):
"I saw the pictures this morning on [George Hite's email address]."

I don't think so. 'Tis kinda hard to do much with an email address other than sending/receiving email to/from it!

More likely you saw the pictures on George's web site:Eagle Harbor Web

(Hint: If it has the '@' symbol in it, it's an email address!)

David there is an update as of 12:00 Monday the deer is gone? Does not say what happened to him but if there was enough ice out he should have been able to swim for the shore.

Mickell, you can send Bill down to Berkley any time you want. I used to be the guy who helped the old people and now Precious and I are the old people. She is getting around on her walker, we go places and each has their own walker. What a way to spend old age.

Congratulations Laurie and Steve on the birth of their little Princess, Sophia.

12:50 update the deer made it ashore

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, April 6, 2009 - 05:54 pm:

Yippee for the deer!

I'm with Brooke...give me the snow...you all keep the traffic! (Starting to sound like old man winter wants to move south tho...bye-bye!)

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Monday, April 6, 2009 - 08:13 pm:

Hey Michael Du Long (mikie)

I read Bill what you said and he said he will cut grass for ya! As long as you have a power mower. ha ha!!! Do not hold Bill to that though. ;O) Since he semi retired, he does good to get the other peoples grass done and they have a BIG backyard and front yard. A person could get lost in there backyard.

By Sandy G (Artessss) on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 - 12:45 am:

Steve....thanks for the update on the deer.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 - 08:35 am:

Mickell, it is the thought that counts. I was thinking more of washing windows. Have to start that as soon as the snow disapears. Today is my Michelles birthday. She and Jack Benny share the same amount of years.
