The Pasty Cam received dozens of Christmas greetings yesterday. For the "morning-after early bird", name at least 6 states that those greetings came from.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 05:54 am:

Good Morning: Hope everybody had a GREAT Christmas. Ours was quiet.

N.C.,IN.,WA.,(continent), MA., TX.,MISSISSIPPI, PA., MD.,GA.

IS LOWER MICHIGAN CONSIDERED A STATE? ha! ha! ha! IF THE U.P. BECAME A STATE OF IT'S OWN, WOULD THE PEOPLE STILL BE CALLED 'YOOPERS?' I REMEMBER WHEN THEY WANTED TO MAKE THE U.P. A STATE OF IT'S OWN. THEY WANTED TO NAME IT SUPERIOR. I SEEM TO REMEMBER THE PEOPLE OF THE U.P. DID NOT WANT IT.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 07:20 am:

Good morning! Nobody mentioned my state of MN.

I remember that Mickill. They also wanted to include Northern Wisconsin, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know what happened to that either. I think that maybe the population would be so small or something like that. I know my dad was all for it. Anyone?

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 07:43 am:

When i was at NMU in the mid '70's it seemed like everyone was all for it. But the reality that the tax base wouldn't support essential services put the kibosh on the dream of Superior.

Perhaps others have better insight.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 10:43 am:

The idea of the U.P. being a State has been around a long time. Heard of it in the late '30s. They felt that the UP was treated like a poor step child by the rest of the State. The UP is about one third of the land mass of the State and for a long time produced about one fifth of the wealth. Yet we were only "given" a few miles of expressway, which of course encouraged the tourist to go to Canada instead of to the western UP. Our gift from the State was decades of patching up US-2!! Because of the attitude, many people didn't want to have the Mighty Mac built. They said if the State didn't want to send us our share then don't send us all the Trolls to fill up our beautiful area. Like I said, it was a very emotional subject. Maybe it still is, since the State government's thinking hasn't changed much. No worry--Yoopers will always get by regardless.

By Ray & Chris (Ray) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 10:45 am:

Charlie, I don't see where anyone has answered the EB question as yet. How about NC,IN,MI, WA,MA and PA?

Ray

Just a little slow in bestowing the award this morning.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 12:07 pm:

Oh yes indeedy, as Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) and others have said above, the State of (Click →) Superior (see map there also) has been proposed before, most aggressively in the 1960's and 1970's.

If that were to occur, would the residents still be called Yoopers? Or perhaps even better: Supers?!

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 12:35 pm:

Building the Mighty Mac or not building the Mighty Mac would not and did not keep the 'trolls' away. The 'trolls' spend money in the U.P. and trolls are not the only people who visit the U.P. AND possibly move there to become taxpayers because they fell in love with the U.P. ;O)

Did the U.P. produce one fifth of the wealth, at one time, because of the copper mines? Just like Detroit and the auto industry- how many people migrated from the south to work in the auto factories and now they are almost closed down just like Detroit is.

By FJL (Langoman) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 01:28 pm:

How about all the Youpers that left the C C and went to Detroit to work over the years.......

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 02:08 pm:

I want to go home. Some folks think I'am big in Detroit City by the letters I write they think I'am doing fine. By day I make the cars by nights I hit the Bars. If they could read between the lines. Yep, me and Bobby Bare used to sing that one alot when I was making a living there.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 02:31 pm:

Mickill mouse I didn't mean the trolls and others were a bad thing. The UP need their help because we weren't getting it from the State that we were payin our taxes to. Yes, the wealth the UP generated was from the copper mines AND from the iron mines,And the forestry industry. Also, we must consider all the technology that has come from our colleges. It was the folks a Tech that developed "pellotizing"(?) that saved The iron industry. I feel the State owed the Upper more than they ever gave. There are many examples of the States attitude in the past. Did you know the only piece of US-41, running all the way to Florida, that wasn't paved was in Baraga County. It didn't get paved until 1948-49.

By mickill mouse (Ram4) on Friday, December 26, 2008 - 03:54 pm:

RICHARD; Even though I am a lot younger than you, I can understand what you are saying.

When they were building Comerica Park, for the Detroit Tigers, it was said that taxpayers money was going to be used. My moms last husband, who was only in Detroit one time, was all upset. He complained that they were going to use HIS tax dollars to help build something he would never see. I did tell him I would send pictures. He found NO humor in that. He was born and raised in Hubbell. I love the U.P., both my parents and grandparents are from Calumet. My moms parents owned a restaurant in Calumet when my mom was growing up. It sounds like I am still trying to defend myself for being a troll. ;O)

I, of course, do not know about all the sate goverment issues as to who gets what, but, why would the U.P. want an expressway? To just drive by all the beautiful things to stop and see? My simple way at looking at it, but I would not want to just drive by things real fast in the U.P.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Saturday, December 27, 2008 - 02:02 am:

As I recall if I got it right, the UP was once all a part of Wisconsin. Michigan got it after the "Ohio wars"(?) whereas Michigan ceceded that part of Ohio around Toledo in exchange for the whole UP! Or something like that.

By John W Anderson (Wd8rth) on Saturday, December 27, 2008 - 09:34 am:

Just think, We could all be Cheese heads instead of Yoopers. I'll pick Yoopers.
