This has really been a year for wind here in the Keweenaw and if you think it's bad when you're at the lower elevations, try heading up high like Kevin Henriksen and Donna MacIntosh happened to do on one of those windy days. When Kevin made it to the top of Brockway Mountain, he had a hard time reading the informational signs there, since they were just about parallel to the ground with the gusts that day. Then Donna experienced similar winds and told me that she was even afraid to go out past the concrete railings for fear of being blown right off the edge. Donna did manage to snap a shot of the color, looking out towards Eagle Harbor and then she spotted a freighter out on Lake Superior, making it's way through some pretty wavy looking water.

NOTE: The winds have pretty much wiped out most of the leaves now, leaving some yellow and burnt orange still hanging on, but for the most part the color is just about done.

Many of my snowmobile vacations ontop of Brockway Mt. were very windy! Blizzard like, but always a great trek!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 08:24 am:

Wow, I have never even seen those signs move.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 08:26 am:

Thanks for the update Mary. I will be heading UP tonight, but not sure yet were I will go.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 08:31 am:

WOW! 2 years ago hubby and I were UP on top of Brockway Mtn. and the winds were like that. We had our picture taken, and my hair was just a blowin'. I think we used it as my profile picture for a while. Anyway, the beauty of it all made it more than worthwhile.

With the signs being blown from the south it explains why a downbound freighter is way outside its lane and sheltering near the peninsula. Normally they'd be much farther out.

I'd like to leave here and blow on UP there. With wind like that the 'ol cabin would be vibrating on it's moorings.

Beautiful pictures from atop Brockway-reminds me of my drive up there this past June. We took one of our lower peninsula friennds there and he was so taken in with the view. I remember the days when my father (Gideye and mother)used to take us up to Brockway in the fall to see the beautiful color and to look for freighters out on the big lake.

Thanks Helen, things are a little tense here. Would love to be in Hubbell right now. I can forget my problems when I am by the Bluff.

Was blowing like that a couple of weeks ago when I was up there, could barely stand up.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 12:49 pm:

I wonder if this was last thursday the 9th, it was REALLY windy. I was thrown into the railing by the canal that day.

Everytime I look at the pictures of the U.P. I get my photo albums out. I love all of the pictures I took. A lot of my favorite ones are the winter shots. Everything looks so peaceful and quiet and calm. :O))

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 05:09 pm:

Michael (Mikie), I don't know the situation, and it's none of my business, but I would like to ask for God's blessing on you and may He send you bluer skies and brighter days ahead!:) Hope you can visit the Bluff soon!

By Donna (Donna) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 08:25 pm:

YES...that was the 9th...WOW...what a breeze up there and yes..the ore boat was close! I think I remember someone saying one time that they HAVE to stay at least 5 miles away from the shores.

It was the most phenomenal time!

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 09:07 pm:

Freighters can come pretty close to the Keweenaw there because the water is very deep just offshore. Even just a couple miles off from Eagle River and Harbour its already 500-700 feet deep in places. I used to fish off there and there is a tremendous dropoff; a near vertical cliff in places, but oh boy was the fishing great!!

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Friday, October 17, 2008 - 11:07 pm:

Little M- seen the rally many times, I'd like to be U.P. this weekend to watch it again, it's a good time.

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Saturday, October 18, 2008 - 08:17 am:

Again, nice pics. I heard that some parts of Ontario, Canada are
past peak 4 Autumn colours. I'm guessing Keweenaw is at least
at peak. Also, I like the pic of the lake freighter, but, I guess I'm
old styled, as I like the ones with the pilot house at the bow.
