Where is the New Power Tour coming to this week?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 06:36 am:

Copper harbor and Houghton
First Post

By Kenty (Dashamo) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 06:42 am:

Good morning all. Way to go Mikie!!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 06:48 am:

Thanks Kenty, I couldn't sleep this morning. Don't normally get up before ten.I can't wait for the Cruise to start this weekend. Love the noise and the cars. Wish I could afford one. Precious tells me if I clean out the garage I can have an old car. Where would I put my shop then? In order to get a car I would have to expand my garage before even buying the car. Cost prohibitive.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 07:50 am:

We have never been to the Cruise, I think that would be a experience to witness! We attended many S.A.A.C. sanctions in Dearborn Heights when we had our red '68 Shelby GT 500 powered by the factory 427 side oiler. Gas fills were every 95 miles!

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 08:25 am:

Dang! If I could fit in my Marilyn Monroe costume, I would head down to the Cruise. Maybe that can be my goal for next year. If I can figure out how to scan a photo of me as Marilyn, I'll post it on my profile. Stay tuned....

Kosk: Just saw about the explosion in Toronto. Hope that it did not affect you. Did you experience it in any way?

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 11:12 am:

Going Cruising tonight! Even though the actual Cruise isnt until Saturday, there are tons of cruisers a week before the event. IF you really want to see the beginning of the actual cruise, watch for the opening parade at 9 Mile and Woodward on Friday at 5pm. Antique police cars and fire trucks will be the only cruisers, with lights and sirens from 9 mile to 11 mile. It is a sight to see. This will be our 3rd time in the parade and I wouldnt miss it for anything. Look for me on a 1960 open cab American La France fire truck with the name "Old Frankie" on it.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 11:59 am:

Everyone whos going to the cruise have fun, I will be at soccer practices all day and it should be fun. Was a little breezy this last Saturday.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 12:26 pm:

So, where's this famous cruise being held?

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 12:46 pm:

It is being held starting from 8 Mile Rd. where the State Fair Grounds are, then North up the Mile roads to the loop in Pontiac. Anyone remember Ted's? I yoosta have places off 9 Mile in Oak Park & Ferndale for many years. The last year I was there was the year of the big Black Out.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 01:03 pm:

That would have been quite an event for the blackout. When that happened all my neighbors came out of the house (no AC got hot), took walks, socialized with each other and BBQ'd. Kind of shows what all these modern conveniences has done to communities doesn't it.

By Shirley Waggoner (Shirlohio) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 01:21 pm:

...will be checking your "profile", Cindy.:) But, you're probably much better looking than Marilyn. She was artificial!

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 05:24 pm:

Used to "run" up & down Woodward many years ago and stop in at "Teds" as Dave H. mentions. Gratiot Ave. from East Detroit (East Pointe) up to Mt. Clemens tho was our main doing. Rode in Connie Killittas car and some of the other well knowns several times when they were just starting out. I was involved with the bunch who founded and built "Motor City Dragway" near New Baltimore! I live right near the old track now.
Every year I say I'm going to the "WDC" but end up watching it on TV. I have 3 oldies now in various stages of restoration but time & $ is the holdup as Mikie probably is aware of.
My "WDC" urge is somewhat satisfied this year as we attended the St. Ignace Classic car show this year before heading UP to the Keweenaw. Great show, time, and cars! Got lots of pics! While looking for daughter and grandson in her 67 Plymouth, we got in the loop around town with this old Pontiac we are using. Couldn't figure why kids were saying "neat" and etc. taking pictures as we passed. At the least this Pontiac needs a paint job etc. but it occured to us then that this car is 26 years old and has some "oldie" status! (?)
Oldest daughters "Copper" 67 Plymouth Belvedere hardtop will be in the "WDC" this year! Mikie has seen a pic of it.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 05:42 pm:

Kathy we go to Nine and Woodward every friday before the cruise. I am a big fan of Ferndale EMS and fire. A couple of EMS guys have a special place in my heart. They are the reason my daughter is still here.

By kathie Murto (Murtomania) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 07:15 pm:

Pennie,
Glad to hear there is a special place for those EMS and firemen. Look for us on Friday. It is a great sight to see all those old emergency vehicles all lit up and with sirens running.

By F.F. (Flipflop) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 07:15 pm:

Duggans in the baqkground..Home of the Big Chief Burger

add ketchup

Woodward cruise is either a Dream or a Nitemare, depending on which side of the road you are on.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 09:02 pm:

Russell my boss has been friends with Connie and many of the other car folks for many years. He used to wrench for Della Woods and then worked for Jack Olstrander. His name is Steve Weintraub, know him?

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 10:39 pm:

I went to school with Larry Paine the owner of Duggans. He is in bad health right now. Wed. the class of sixty one will be meeting and someone will be telling us how Larry is. If anyone is interested I will pass it on. Russ or anyone else, if you come down on Sat. I will be by the coffee place on Wiltshire and Woodward in Berkley. Friday night the city of Berkley has a parade of the classics on Twelve Mile Road. It goes from Woodward to Tyler in Berkley. Neat parade. I live two blocks from Woodward and the traffic has already started here. Dani, my daughter, says I should sell parking places. Not on my grass dear.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 10:46 pm:

For those of you who don't know what a Big Chief Hamburger is. There was a resteraunt named the Totem Pole that was famous for its food, and the fact that the cruisers of bygone days would shuttle through. Would go there to pickup girls. According to buddy Larry, we never were sucessful. I guess I have better memories of it then he does. We would go through in his 1946 Hudson that we painted with a brush. Used red paint that was the same as the fireplugs. I bought a Martin line bus once and took Precious her mother and sister cruising the Pole and then out to Teds. Dave remember Little Teds by Six Mile and Woodward?

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 11:06 pm:

I guess you folks didn't understand my question earlier? What state and which city ???? Have no idea where those roads are. Guess I'm in a different world hey?

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 11:39 pm:

Kay,it is the state of L. Michigan near Detroit. Then North of 8 mile rd.along Woodward is Ferndale. After 10 mile is Pleasant Ridge Royal Oak, 11 & 12 Mile is Berkley.Yes, I remember that Ted's,and the Dinner Car by the YMCA.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, August 11, 2008 - 11:49 pm:

Dave I ate at the Diner in Highland Park many times. They used to have teas at the YWCA for the girls to meet quality men. The womens "Y" was next to the mens. Back in the sixties it was the place to go.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 01:30 am:

Hey this thread has got everyone interested and hepped up! Nice topic for all, especially for us older folks---lots of memories from those days!

Mskatie, (or anyone): Go to www.woodwarddreamcruise.com Patience with dial up connections--- it will come in. This is a nationally or even internationaly known event.

Trolldiva: Don't know Jack or Steve but did meet Della Woods and her husband a few times. Worked on her Super Stock 3-2b stick shift Pontiacs a few times! Close friends of theirs lived a couple of doors from the garage I worked at (Sunoco) in St. Clair Shores MI! Very nice lady I recall!

Connie lived a few doors from my dads place in Chesterfield Twp. in the 60s. Last I heard he has an airline company! His son Scott sadly was killed in a drag race crash just recently. It made national news!

Hey we can't forget UPs St. Ignace Classic car show. It's growing yearly. Most of the cars there will also be at the WDC.
Here is a sample pic (and a plug) of what was there and what will be seen Saturday at the WDC!

Was on Woodward last night about 7:00. It was a zoo at 13 mile. My sister and I go sit out there usually wednesday or thursday before the cruise to watch. There are plenty of cars out.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 11:04 am:

I thought the Zoo is on 10 Mile Rd.I know it is,I could see the Zoo Tower from the yard when we lived in Royal Oak.It was always a good time when the WDC started up.For those of you who love Gourpoo's,you can get them at Holiday Market on Main St.in Royal Oak.You ought to go Russ and get some,or have Alice swing by and get some for you eh.Don't you miss me bringing them to you and trade for egg's? Amy Joy had the best coffee to go along with doughnuts didn't they Mikie?

"For those of you who love Gourpoo's, (sic)"

Gourpoos? (No apostrophe, its evidently only a plural form, not possessive.)

What the heck are they, Dave?

… unless …

it sounds vaguely as if you might have meant Korppu
a.k.a (in da UP) Trenary Toast, from The Trenary Home Bakery (?)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 - 12:15 pm:

Dave, My mom told me coffee was not good for you. I have never had a cup. Precious on the other hand drinks enough for the both of us. Did like the Amy Joy donuts though. Loved the teepee sundae at the Pole the best. Now there is a Burger King on the Pole site. Not the same. They wont let you eat in your car there. Andrea the Irish dancer is hoping her other Grandpa will take her out in the cruise in his old car. Tim also wants to ride with him. Last night Tim wanted to find his other grandpa and go for a ride. Kenny said it was to late. Me, I would have taken him to see his grandpa.

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Wednesday, August 13, 2008 - 04:41 pm:

Dave H.: Of all the things we wanted to do/get while UP in the Keweenaw "Trenary Toast" (or equivalent) was one and we just didn't get any!
Also wanted to get some local made Thimbleberry Jam at the "Jampot" but the monks there told me they were sold out of last years and that this years wasn't ready yet! (wahhh!)

Maybe Alice can swing by da place in Royal Oak and get some dos "Korppus" EH?
