We spent some time up at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge yesterday, as they are opening in time for Mother's Day. The new banquet facility addition is all set for a big turnout tomorrow. We were making sure that Pasty.NET WiFi is available in the cabins and throughout the lodge. I actually got a little sunburn.

I asked this question once before on this site and I didn't get a answer. We are 10-15 miles from much water (lakes). When the farmers start working their fields how do the seagulls know????
They show up in large flocks to gather the grubs/worms that are turned up.

Good afternoon everyone! 55 degrees and sunny here in Houghton. Rain on the way this evening and in thru Sunday.

Mikie, hope you have a great birthday!

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Saturday, May 10, 2008 - 04:44 pm:

Paul The only way the gulls know about the turned fields is that the crows tell them. You know how those gulls can't keep a secret.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, May 10, 2008 - 06:21 pm:

Actually there is neat trick to not only know how seagulls find food, but also how to tell the wind direction. The next time you see a flock (or even one) of seagulls sitting someplace, note the direction they are facing; seagulls always face into the wind. I imagine this would explain how they know when a farmers field is freshly plowed; the can smell it in the breeze, then of course they tattle to every living thing in the area......

By Russell E. Emmons (Russemmons) on Sunday, May 11, 2008 - 12:53 am:

The only birds that can smell are Turkey Vultures and the ornithologists aren't even sure of that. Gulls always have a few "scouts" way high up soaring inland and can see the activity and then call the others. Neil Harri could probably explain the ratio to height and miles away seen at ground level. We live only a few miles from Anchor Bay (Lake St. Clair) and about 8 miles from the St. Clair River. Let a farmer around us break ground only a few rows and the Gulls are there in minutes!

Thank you all for your views on how the dumpster ducks know what's going on! I can sleep better now!

Happy birthday Mary. Two holidays together, your birthday and Mothers Day. Hope you got a lot of presents. My father in laws birthday was on Christmas. He got cheated when it came to birthdays. Always said he was in good company when it came to sharing birthdays.
