Whenever the wind blows like it was during the winter storm warning this week, then you can bet Lake Superior is stirred up and rolling, much like these photos from Peter Chiomenti. This duo of pictures gives you an idea of the conditions, first with the early part of the storm, when the lake was just beginning to get worked up. The sun was still peeking through the clouds, as the wind swept them across the sky. Then in the midst of the storm, those waves were bumping, crashing and splashing, raging their way to the shore, as the gales of November begin.

Those are great shots of the Big Lake. What a way to catch the surf.

By Stacy Maurer (Stacy) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 06:55 am:

Love the waves.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 07:03 am:

Great pics. I love the photos of Lake Superior's anger.

Grab your wetsuit and lets hit the surf!
Don't forget to fire up the sauna though.

I think that might be "gales" of November----superb photos, though!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 08:58 am:

This reminds me of the first shot Peter had on the Pasty Cam, which was October 7, 1999.

1999
This shot was chosen as a favorite in the calendar nominations that year, and appeared in the 2000 Pasty Cam Calendar.

By the way, the 2008 Pasty Cam Color Calendar is on its way, bigger and more beautiful that ever. You can include one in your next pasty order and save the shipping cost, or purchase separately, or along with the 2008 Yooper Calendar. Congratulations to Greta Jones on her snowy shot that was chosen for the cover.

Who knows, maybe Alex knew some November Gails. ;-)

By Helen (Heleninhubbel) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 09:21 am:

What strength and power those waters have and yet they are so beautiful. Maybe we should remember all the people out on those ships and pray for their safety.......for me, I would be one sea sick mess!!!

Thanks for the great pictures...God Bless everyone..........

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 09:28 am:

The fact is Gordon was dating a girl named Gail at the time.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 09:30 am:

Oh my gosh, could I go body surfing in those waves. THE LAKE is always so much warmer when the waves are rolling, but probably not this time of year. Still looks inviting though.

By Anna Roehrich (Updreamer) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 09:36 am:

Wow! That reminds me of a trip we made to the UP in 2002. It was August, and a front line had come through just as we were coming over the Bridge. By the time we got up to the lake it looked just like that. I love Superior when she's really rolling.

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 10:40 am:

Great pictures today of the power of a November storm on the "Big Lake". I will be using one on my desktop for the remainder of the month,(there goes the great Autum color photo that you had on the site in October) My article about sailing in this type of weather can be read @ http://www.boatnerd.com/fitz/firstseason.htm

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 10:50 am:

Can't wait to see those waves in a couple of days.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 11:24 am:

Eddyfitz-All I can say is Wow! after reading your article.

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 12:11 pm:

Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz):

Wow, in retrospect, that sure was a chilling omen on your final downbound trip of that first short season on November 18, 1958 when on northern Lake Huron:

Quote:

"The Fitz was buffeted by these high winds and heavy seas, and seemed to want to crack in two with every mountainous wave. [With] the balance of the trip that late November day […] under heavy winds and near 25-foot seas."

Eddy Fitz...Great Article!

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 03:59 pm:

Sorry about the link i provided above, for some reason the + between November and Gale changes to "%2B" and it doesnt take you to my pictures - maybe somebody can help me out here. If you copy and paste the url it does seem to work..? or if you replace the %2B with a plus sign it works..?

Anybody have ideas? I'll try again in case the font has something to do with it.
Richard's November Gale Album

Mary says: I'm not sure what the technical explanation is for this, but in layman's terms...the software does not recognize the space between words in a URL, so when you copy it, the + sign appears instead of the space. Then the link cannot be found. You need to eliminate the space in the URL and that can be done in the "Edit Album" link. I'll send you an email explaining what to do, rather than "boring" everyone with it. :->

Great pictures Richard, did the guy get wet?????

By Richard L. Barclay (Notroll) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 06:15 pm:

He says just above his ankles for the wave and not counting spray. I got caught a bit later when a wave threw enough water into the wind to completely soak my lake side while taking the wave pictures. Then I went home.

By 4WDGreg (4wdgreg) on Wednesday, November 7, 2007 - 07:36 pm:

That first photo is fantastic! It looks like the big lake is just getting "warmed up" for the storm season though.
