Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 09:17 am:

Fungo Tedeschi had his 15 minutes of fame when he struck out Babe Ruth in Iron Mountain in the fall of 1926. (How would you like a nickname like "Fungo"?) Actually, Tedeschi's first name was "Nello", and Babe's real name was George Herman Ruth. The Babe was in town for an exhibition game with local players, and the photo is another treasure from the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.

The waves of Autumn across the U.P. are generally at their peak around World Series time, and this year is no exception. Edie and I will have the pleasure of checking out the colors all the way up to Copper Harbor this afternoon, ending up at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge for the Historical Society's annual dinner this evening.

Have a good week :o)

Now there is something you never hear about. Babe in the UP And being struck out by Fungo from Iron Mountain.Way to cool.

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 09:49 am:

and Babe did it all with no steroids. Faith, determination, and a great attitude got him there.

By Therese (Therese) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 10:23 am:

'Fungo' is a type of baseball bat. Don't know anything more about it, but it sounds like a good name for a baseball player. Or for a pet bat.

By FJL (Langoman) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 10:45 am:

T.R.Brunk, you forgot to include "the bottle"..........;-}

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 11:08 am:

Lookit the length of that bat!

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 11:47 am:

I can remember when the major league players would tour Michigan after the season ended in September..If I recall correctly they oftem played games in South Range..

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A "Fungo" is a fly ball hit by a player who throws the ball up to himself usually using what is called a "fungo bat". A fungo bat is a specially designed bat used by baseball and softball coaches for practice purposes. It is not designed to hit thrown or pitched balls but rather is intended to hit balls tossed in the air. Typical fungo bats are 35-37 inches long and weigh 17-22 ounces (while full-size baseball bats can weigh 30 ounces or more). Coaches hit many balls during fielding practice, and the light weight allows the coach to hit balls repeatedly with high accuracy.

That's the first picture I've seen of Babe not smoking a cigar.

By John R (Parrotjohn) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 12:27 pm:

Yep, maybe no steroids, but you gotta include beer!

By Snowman (Snowman) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 01:26 pm:

That is a pretty long bat.:)

By Edward & Dolores Fulcher (Eddee) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 01:48 pm:

Eddyfitz you are right. They did play in South
Range. Also if your the Eddy that lived in Hubbell and went to L.L High Paul & Carol Liimatta
said to tell you hello.

By Paul Oesterle (Paulwebbtroll) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 01:50 pm:

Don't forget the hotdogs also!

By Melodie Hayes (Herblady) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 01:56 pm:

My dad told me about when Babe Ruth was in Iron Mountain. He (Ted Anderson) was 16 years old at the time. The people got impatient for Babe to come up to bat, so eventually he swung at every pitch.

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 02:30 pm:

Ok here's the list.... Faith, Determination, great attitude, the bottle, beer, hotdogs, (might as well put women in there) and a really long Bat!

By Theresa R Brunk (Trb0013) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 02:31 pm:

Oh yeah... and cigars :oP

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 02:53 pm:

Baseball - Cracker Jacks Peanuts - Cigars Chew Tobacco Bubble Gum,and Beer. The steroids of the days gone by,that was injected by hard work on the farm, which included bailing hay,eh?

Eddyfitz; Your telling us about the (Fungo Bat)brought back some memories of my Grandpa Beanie. Our Local V.F.W. Post ? in Dollar Bay, they got some organized Little League baseball started in the early sixty's. Was wondering if Beanie was there along with maybe Bab Jurmul (sp) who had the store with his brothers on the street where the new old C.C. Dairy was.Bab & Beanie were pitchers,& I know my Grandpa played on the Cub's Farm Team,i saw the uniform. Also i have seen a baseball bat that looks like it was a (Fungo Bat)baseev on your info you gave about it. As he Beanie, was our Coach, used to give us great pratice, hitting himself, infield & out, using the bat i've seen, now getting to my point in the quicky best way i know.

Also maybe? Inspiring for someone else to Post about the start of Baseball Teams from back when in U.P., or knowing the two Men i wrote about,or pictured today, and what is the V.F.W. Post number in Dollar Bay?

Grace; Thanks for your weather reports. I'am the one who incourged someone to let us know if the Cows tail is wet, cold or frozen,or hot and sticky. You took the job,(should be showed on Dirty Jobs TV,)cause your a doing a good job!

Now keep in mind i started writing this after (John R)made his post at 12:27 pm: so i have not read anything after that. If i would have gone back an did that,i would have lost all that i wrote in all this time, which is 2:57 pm: now.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 03:01 pm:

I sure hope nobody came up to Babe and slaped him on the back to soon after that picture was taken,by the way.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 03:04 pm:

Baseball was different then, went to a Tigers game a few weeks back (first one I'd been to at the new park) Holy $6 beer! I had a small one cause I'm a lightweight!

By Eddyfitz (Eddyfitz) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 03:27 pm:

At a recent Red Wings game I sent my two sons-in-laws up to get 4 beers..The price was $34.00 so we sipped the whole game thru.

Just a suggestion (not to be construed as a criticism!) for Dave, but more generally to all:

That's exactly why it's a good idea to first compose your message in Notepad, or the like instead of jumping right into that Add a Message box and entering your message online.

That way, once you've composed your message, and perhaps edited and revised it several times, you can go back to the forum to see if any intervening posts may have a bearing on your message, either obviating it or perhaps inspiring further revision thereof.

Its also a great way to protect a somewhat lengthy epistle from the risk of a loss to a moment of internet connectivity!

Once you are satisfied with your message, you may then rather expeditiously copy the text from Notepad and paste it into the forum's Add a Message box and click on that Preview/Post Message button to for a final on-line preview before committing by clicking on that Post Message button.

I try to do that myself.

I know at times the temptation is great to just jump right in and enter a message on-line, but on a few occasions when I've yielded to the "hasty post" temptation, I've regretted it for one reason or another!

I have found that there are times too when it would be well to compose a message, and perhaps sleep on it before posting, lest one become a victim of "hoof-in-mouth" disease. (Been there, done that <blush>!)

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 03:43 pm:

There ya go, in spite of all, I still failed in my proofreading!

"Its also a great way to protect a somewhat lengthy epistle from the risk of a loss to a moment of internet connectivity!"

Should have read:

"Its also a great way to protect a somewhat lengthy epistle from risk in a momentary loss of internet connectivity!"

<Sigh!>

Yeah, poor Babe's voice would have probably went from alto to soprano. :{

By Snowman (Snowman) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 04:29 pm:

Sorry, I tried to copy and paste David's post and it doesn't show a quote.

Frnash, please, can you "school" me? Hope this post is appropriate.

By Marianne Marrow (Mkmarrow) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 05:34 pm:

My husband's parents' house is now where the crowd is standing in back of Babe Ruth in the picture. Excited to see this picture after being told years ago that Babe Ruth was thought to have played there in that field....a great bit of history lies there.

I remember Dizzy Trout, a pitcher for the Detroit Tigers, and other professional ball players playing in South Range in 1946. Dizzy hit a long home run in the game if I remember correctly.

Just type in \quote{and your message}

The sign in the background shows that sports and advertising have a long history. Though one I could do without !

FrNash-aren't you being a little picky about David H posting?

David H-you're welcome (about the weather info)

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 08:00 pm:

People in pro-sports back in the Babe Ruth days were not tested for steroids or any other drugs so I don't know that we can be so sure that they were not doing drugs. I watched a program on the history channel about the history of now illegal drugs and drugs were a serious problem going all the way back into the 1800's, although there wasn't a huge issue made of it because at that time these drugs were not illegal.

By kay Moore (Mskatie) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 08:26 pm:

Just to let you fellows know.........I'm doing okay, I think, writing posts for this site. Considering that I never figured out how to clip and paste etc. You'll just have to put up with my mistakes, as you'll never really know if I slip one in on purpose to see if some one will feel so smarty-pants to correct someone, hey? I've always liked English class but have more important things to worry about in my life....You really are Mr Wheatman in diguise aren't you? huh? huh? (Yeeii Haaa there goes the Packers! Bye for now)

By Therese (Therese) on Sunday, October 7, 2007 - 09:51 pm:

... That's 'disguise'. :P Sorry, Kay, couldn't resist. I make lots of typos, too.

I have been watching a great thunderstorm pass slowly from west to east in the far north. Lots of lightning but too far away to hear thunder. The weather radar shows it is walking the beach of Lake Superior. A hot night; can't wait for the cooldown tomorrow night. We don't deserve this warm weather!

Grace M Wetton (Gmw):
"FrNash-aren't you being a little picky about David H posting?"

Certainly, absolutely, positively not!

Dave's very much appreciated post simply served as a meaningful context in which to demonstrate the value of my suggestion.

Grace, perhaps you missed the paragraph where I anticipated such a negative reading of my post:

Quote:

"Just a suggestion (not to be construed as a criticism!) for Dave, but more generally to all:"

It was intended solely to suggest a technique that I personally have found helpful in composing messages, for those who may not have discovered the benefits that it affords.

But regretfully there appear to be a very few among us who apparently work overtime in attempt to intuit a negative motive to the most innocent message. And some folks have wondered of late why this forum's former rich evocative discussion and conviviality had been on the wane of late. Could there be a connection? Hmmm.

Sad, eh? And just when this forum was showing positive signs of returning to its former richness!

Grace, aren't you "being a little picky about a potentially helpful suggestion?"

Or perhaps, as they say "No good deed goes unpunished!"
