Grandma Doors line the streets of Hancock, in tribute to Grandmothers both young and old. Project creator Mary Wright says this art display works on a number of levels. First, for the history of each individual, second, for the family ties, third, for the community ties and fourth, for the creative expression of the artists. Daryl Laitila recently walked along the main street, snapping pictures of several of the artistically decorated doors as she went. You can see the creativity flowing in these specimens with the first one seeming to be a collage of Grandmother's faces, then the next one of Grandma Gladys Sarazin (from Bootjack), with the painted body and photographed head, to a painted rendition of Grandma getting the sauna ready and even one of Grandma looking out the screen door to see who's coming up the drive. If you're in the area, it's worth a trip to Hancock, then a stroll along the main street enjoying the doors and the information they contain.

Late breaking news: Daryl just informed me that there will be a Grandma Door walk in Hancock on Friday, October 5th, when there will be an ancestor by each door to talk about their Grandma, the door and the artwork! How fun that will be!! :->

You can see the rest of the Grandma Doors here. There will be more information on the site later. The Hancock Grandma Door Walk will be from 6-8 pm Friday, Oct. 5.

This was so nice when we were in Hancock in mid July. I so enjoyed the many doors.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 08:23 am:

My favorite is the screen door. What will Mary Wright think of next? How many doors are there? Are all the ones that were in Marquette (which I didn't see) now in Hancock and did Mary Wright do all of them?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 08:23 am:

Nice picture of Gladys. I've heard of this place but haven't been there. Yet another place to visit.

This isn't Mr. Deb. LOL

these are great! This expectant grandma wishes she could see them all.

I too would like to know a little more about the doors. I seen them in Marquette and thought what a wonderful idea. Have they now become the traveling doors?? Is each artist responsible for getting her door to the site? I also recently seen one of these doors in L'Anse, MI at the Hilltop Restaurant. THEY ARE SO INTERESTING. What a great idea by Mary Wright.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 10:14 am:

Congrats, Maija! I'm an expectant grandma again, for the 15th time! I saw a couple of Mary Wright's other displays, I think one was poles decorated by hundreds of individuals and also the welcoming chairs.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 10:17 am:

I just googled Mary Wright + grandma doors and got this: http://www.miningjournal.net/stories/articles.asp?articleID=20256
So maybe the doors in Hancock were never in Marquette? I'm not sure.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 11:24 am:

I saw those doors when I was in town, they were all lined up down the street so you couldn't miss them. I am lucky enough to still have both my Grandmas so my kids get to know them too.

Went to see a friend's art display at The Hancock Community Arts Center and saw the doors up and down both sides of the street! Very nice stroll for a beautiful weekend. Another nice weekend in store so far for us UP here!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 02:18 pm:

Congrats Marsha and maija. That's always exciting.

Isn't there someplace you can go to see all the doors? I thought they were sold some place where you could see all of them.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, September 29, 2007 - 02:27 pm:

Thanks Marsha and Deb S. and congrats all grandmas too. 15th Marsha--whoa! This is my first of a potential none!

My wife says these grandma doors are the scariest thing she's seen in years.
