By Martha Kirk (Misschiefie) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 12:45 am:

Aww, I can't resist trying to get the Thursday early bird even if I haven't yet gone to bed yet on Wednesday. Reminds me of getting faxes sent to me from Australia which arrive the day before they were sent.

By F.F. (Flipflop) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 12:55 am:

BTW I listened to the WJR podcast. Charlie you are a radio guy deep down. I could hear it in your voice !
Oh yeah... the picture. I bet it would be so loud with the water rushing by that... wait is that a rainbow. By gosh by golly it is !
Truly BEAUTIFIS !!!

By Linda Corrigan (Josiesgrandma) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 12:55 am:

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 01:33 am:

Just to share this with Pasty readers:

So a young girl calls yesterday stating that Medicare has failed to pay for my last years flu shot, and asks can she verify some information. (I can hear it's a room full of operators, a.k.a. a boiler room).

She starts off innocuous enough, asking me to confirm my name, at which point I stated that it was very noisy on her end, and could she send whatever request in writing. She said they were very busy there, but that she could not do that; however I could speak with her supervisor to confirm they're on the up and up (who mentioned on the up + up?).

..... click

The point is this, how many people that are 65 aren't on Medicare, and didn't get a flu shot? A pretty good chance of getting a positive response to both questions, I'd say ...

I believe that an upcoming question would to have asked my Medicare number, which is just a letter plus your Social Security number.

You see where this was going? ... Color me paranoid,

Wow! I'm late early! Good morning all.

By Kathy P. (Katiaire) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 05:31 am:

Charlie, this "mix" of posting times is fun, especially if one is up this time of day.
Mrbill, I do not believe you are being paranoid at all. You are just alert to the many scams presently going on. After verifying your name, you know the next request would be to verify your social security number.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 07:39 am:

Good morning! Mr. Bill, you are a very wise man indeed. Paranoia is a good thing occasionally.

Happy Birthday to my hubby Ron (aka Mr. Deb). He turns the big 5-0 today!!

Charlie, again love the Canyon Falls picture!

By Liz B (Lizidaho) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 07:49 am:

50th HB, Ron!!

By Rowdy (Roudymi) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 07:54 am:

Mr. Bill, do you have caller ID on your phone? What message showed up on it? Than again I suppose those kind of "people" would block that kind of information. However, that might be another way to get a clue as to whether it's a legitimate call or not.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 08:00 am:

And you know, even though they have a do not call list now and our number is on it, we still get all kinds of phone calls from telemarketers and anybody looking for a handout. There really ought to be a law that actually works.

Good idea on the caller ID thing Mr. Bill. Doesn't hurt to check it out. We don't even answer our phone any more unless it's somebody we know because they're usually just looking to find out when is the best time to call people. Half the time they aren't even there when you answer. So, we're never home. Works for us.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 08:03 am:

Mr Bill, if you do not have caller I D, try pushing the star key followed by the numbers 69 on your phone. For a small fee the phone # possibly can be traced. Hopefully this method is available elsewhere other than Iowa. So sad, many scams out there one has to be very careful nowdays!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 08:07 am:

Happy Birthday Ron!

Can someone out there help me find something? I am looking for a cemetery in Hancock that has a Copper headstone, its my Great Great Grandfathers. My Mom thinks it is near the church (yeah I know, helpful) I am hoping to find it this weekend so if anyone has an idea please let me know.

By Phil Hoover (Nmu1) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 08:21 am:

Deb:

There is a way now to compromise caller ID. So, if you think that your bank or another business is calling, be aware that it might not be! It is especially important for older people to know this and not give out any information.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 08:41 am:

I was up late last night uploading pictures to my gallery. Almost late enough to get the early bird! I'd rather be sleeping, though!

Happy Birthday Mr. Deb! I hope the Birthday Fairy is extra good to you today!!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 12:19 pm:

Well, I almost made it in time for Good Morning. So, I'll have to wish everyone a Good Afternoon, today. And a Happy Big 50th Birthday to Mr. Deb!

This is an awesome picture, with the rainbow over the gorgeous falls!

My Mich Tech son was dumb enough to jump into Canyon Falls with one of his friends a couple of years ago, in late April, when the falls were swollen with snow runoff. He underestimated the strength of the falls & almost didn't make it out alive, even though he is a decent swimmer. He was in long enough to get super cold, but thank goodness he wasn't otherwise seriously injured. I hope he learned his lesson & doesn't do that stunt again! College kids do some ridiculous things sometimes, I guess, and they think they are invinvible.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 12:24 pm:

Mrbill, you are not paranoid. That is a known scam. You did the right thing.

I hope everyone knows that your bank will never call you to ask for information, and neither will anyone else, who is legitimate. Never give your social security or medicare or your drivers license numbers, etc, over the phone or in response to an email requesting them!

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 01:01 pm:

Mr. Deb and the mackinaw bridge are the same age.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 01:29 pm:

Pennie I think that Ron and the bridge are both national treasures. Happy birthday Ron.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 02:19 pm:

Yes they are Mikie, I agree

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 02:46 pm:

And those scammers are a crafty bunch!!

True story.
Scammers love to use a range of different names to go by, so as to convince you they are reputable. Once, Dr. Nat got a bunch of emails suggesting to send them money or personal numbers or something. Anyways, the emails came from Nigeria under the name "Bruce Wayne". Later she told me that Batman was spamming her work account. Of course, I replied "Holy bad name choice, NatGirl"!!

So, I hear that in a few years (around 2012 or so) the Mackinaw Bridge is getting a full structural makeover to repair some of the bracing and such, which got me to thinking....... If Mr. Deb is the same age as the Bridge today, will he be getting a full structural re-do as well??? ;-)

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 02:59 pm:

Birthday Fairy? Deb,any idea who that would be? Happy 50 th. Mr.Deb a.k.a. Ron.

We have Dish Network TV and the set is on if we are home. When a call comes in it shows up on the TV who it is calling. And if the TV is off we can check to see the calls we missed. Also have caller ID on the phone itself. Our number is listed with just inital of first name with full last name.(not in my name)Mrs. dose not want my 8 letter last name, when hers is half that! So the caller don't know your first name,or if your M/F but if asks for Mr. or Mrs. time to say No thanks click.Isn't it nice that you can't slam the phone down anymore, just click? I used to be a Tellemarketer for a famous picture taking business wanting to give you a FREE 8 x 10 as a part-time job back when I was money hungry and had 6 paychecks a month. You got to be carefull who your talking to.When I clear my 25 caller ID 60% is ID blocked. I have dial-up so line is busy alot,if anyone wants us we each have cell phone.

On a differant note, have you seen the TV comerical with the Cow from Wisconsin who moved to Califorina and likes that fact of no snow?

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 03:40 pm:

With scams & Telemarketers come the beauty of having a completely screwed up Polish Last name (went back to mine after the divorce). My daughter is trained that if my name is slaughtered on the phone I am A)not here B)do not exist C)dead or D) in prison. She can choose whichever feels good at the time, was the same rule when I was a kid since my Moms Maiden name is Finnish and Married was Polish no matter who they asked for they couldn't say it.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 04:47 pm:

Thanks everyone! Even though me and the Troll Bridge are the same age, its probably in much better shape. (Although, round is a shape)
Mr. Deb

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 05:54 pm:

David H: We have Dish, too, and it amazes our family and friends when the phone rings and it comes up on our TV! I don't understand though why it doesn't do it every time. I know it takes a couple rings and when we first got Dish, it did come up every time.

Beautiful weather today in the Flint area. Back to school/work for me Tuesday!

By Mary Drew at Pasty Central (Mdrew) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 10:18 pm:

Happy Birthday Ron...
You've joined the ranks of the 50 crowd now. Did you get your AARP card yet? :->

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 10:27 pm:

Barbie moved furniture around this afternoon.I used to come home late and trip over stuff. Don't you hate that guys when our women do that so often? But this time I helped her,and I don't come home late anymore. We moved the computer and huge stand back into the spare room now that daughter, and baby are back in MI.In the process I misplaced the inportant cord for the P.C. and it took Sherlock Barbie to find it after some time.

Marsha; if you have two TV's like me, you must clear them both when 25 numbers get stored. That is what helps me with that same problem anyway.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 11:17 pm:

I was thinking more about joining the Gray Panthers! Thanks Mary! Capt. Paul, the re-structuring continues in 3 weeks, more shoulder repair. Wish another coat of paint would fix it instead.
Mr. Deb

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Friday, August 31, 2007 - 08:25 am:
