Eight years ago the crew at Still Waters got together for a peeling party. Daryl Laitila was there with her Pasty Cam.

The gentlemen in the picture were fortunate to be among so many lovely looking women.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Saturday, August 25, 2007 - 08:26 am:

My Mom and Dad were residents of Still Waters at the time of this picture, although they are not there peeling potatoes.

What a great place that was, and what a loss to have it gone.

Still, the copper country is wonderful for its care of the elderly and handicapped. Thanks to all!

Regarding the post yesterday about the fire up by the gift shop just north of Ahmeek, my husband and I had stopped there to use the "facilities" and I pointed out to him the plume of smoke coming up from near the hedges. (It almost looked like the smoke from someone smoking a cigar.) Within seconds this tree went up in flames--unreal how fast it went up. Of course, we couldn't get a good signal on our track phone. Evidently, someone called 911 and the fire departments arrived. (The Gazette said it was a quick response, but when you're waiting there, it seems like forever!) Luckily they were able to put it out where it jumped the road, because that could have been very disastrous!!

Good Morning, Everyone, from rainy mid-Michigan.

Charlie, did you get any cool lightning pictures in the Detroit area yesterday? I saw that the Tigers had an 8-hour rain delay, and won.

I hope our Pasty friends in the Holly-Fenton area and the rest of southeast Michigan are safe after the severe weather last night, that was apparently the worst of the season. Also, I hope our friends in the flooded areas of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana are safe! Take care, you all!

Well, the Crim is over for another year. That's our 10-mile roadrace for Special Olympics. Actually, it's several races, including one for those who are handicapped, the Teddy Bear Trot, and races of varying distances for runners, walkers, bicyclists, and wheelchairs. This year there were 14,000 entered! People come from all over the world to race, and it is generally won by the Kenyans. However, we have a good local showing of times. This year there were a few snafus, such as last night's weather and tornados and a building collapse this week in downtown Flint where the race ends on the bricks of Saginaw Street. Humidity was high and there was some rain, too.

We certainly needed that rain in Baraga County, where I was all week. When we arrived there Monday the fire danger was "High" as posted at the DNR office. I thought that was as high as it goes, until then I saw it at "Very High" and then it went to "Extreme". I hope everyone is safe with fire and cigarettes, etc. That area is much drier than others I saw between the Mackinac Bridge and L'anse.

Also enjoyed a Whitewater concert Thursday night in L'anse, and now the song "Keweenaw Light" is playing over and over through my head! I guess that's not a bad thing!

Well, back to the ratrace: hostessing my family reunion tomorrow and back to work in a week.

Now that's a picture to remember!!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Saturday, August 25, 2007 - 03:18 pm:

Hello, all! We survived the storms last night, I happened to be on 23 when it hit. Most of the damage was farther north of us since we are southern Livingston County. The tornado warnings were for Cohoctah and Fenton, but they were really vague about them until after just saying Ingham and Livingston county on the radio so we really had no idea what was going on. Looks like Potterville was hit pretty bad too in Ingham county. Everyone have a good rest of the weekend.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Saturday, August 25, 2007 - 03:33 pm:

Hello from Mishawaka, IN. The rain seems to be over---for now. We had rain last night and again this morning. Nothing like those of you had in the Fenton area. Hope all came through the storm in good condition.
Drove to Angola this am to check the cottage. Heard that Steuben County, IN has had 13+ inches of rain in August. No wonder the water is nearly up to the cottage. It will rise another foot most likely. So everything inside should be alright. We did move a lot of things to higher places and away from the front of the cottage. Water was everywhere in the fields on the way there. For everyone I hope the rain is finished for awhile.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, August 25, 2007 - 05:33 pm:

Brooke, do you know if Holly got much damage, or if most of it was Fenton? Thanks.

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Saturday, August 25, 2007 - 08:08 pm:

Marsha,

When I'm really feeling homesick for the UP, I put on my
Whitewater CD with "The Keweenaw Light" on it. When my dad
and I were driving back from the UP last Sunday, he asked me
not to play any Whitewater so we wouldn't have a waterworks
experience. When we drive up, there's never any problem with
listening to their CDs.... Sounds as if you had a wonderful week.
Too bad about the moose. I've never seen any in the UP either,
but I probably did see their ancestors in Ontario prior to the big
Moose Lift.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Saturday, August 25, 2007 - 08:33 pm:

By the way, Kosk, I saw a picture in the L'anse Sentinel of your dad signing books. Did you see it? I knew right away it was him!

Good evening from Mishawaka IN. Beautiful shot of the moon over the bridge right now.

By john mich (Johnofmi) on Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 03:57 am:

During Chalie's interview on WJR yesterday he mentioned that everyone in the above photo has since passed away. How sad. I certainly hope that statement didn't include the young lady at the bottom of the photo

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Sunday, August 26, 2007 - 07:53 am:

No, Marsha. I haven't seen it, but hope one of my cousins will think
of sending it to me.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, August 27, 2007 - 08:00 am:

Marianne, I didn't hear anything about Holly but you probably have by now.
