On the 20th of August in 1999 the Pasty Cam rode along on a sunset cruise out of Copper Harbor. The daily picture was updated pretty late that day.

Good Morning, Y'all, from Midland, where it is raining hard this morning. I can't decide which song is more appropriate for today, "Rainy Days and Mondays" or the old song that we used to sing when I was little, "It's raining, it's pouring, the Old Man is snoring. He went to bed and bumped his head and couldn't get up until morning." Did you all sing that one?

It's interesting that it waited until today to start raining hard. Today is the first day of the high school's band camp. The kids are supposed to spend the whole afternoon and evening outside, marching. At least they are inside this morning, learning their music. Maybe it will stop raining by then. Oh well, we need the rain.

I'm really sorry that so many of you all couldn't sleep this morning. I hope you can catch up on your sleep tonight!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 07:55 am:

Good morning, finally getting the rain. The installers are not happy with me cause I have 2 exteriors they are working on today.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 08:24 am:

It is sixty here and the rain sounds so soothing that I think I will take a nap. There is one drop of water that is making noise in the office and it is driving me nuts. So down here in Berkley it is perfect for a nap.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 09:10 am:

Good morning one and all……

Yes, the Dr. and I are back (unfortunately) from our Great Lakes excursion. I will just touch on a few of the more interesting things we did. We left the 3rd and arrived Saturday the 4th amid a beautiful blue sky so before we checked into our room we went to Calumet Waterworks and watched an awesome sunset. Sunday we enjoyed a wonderful lunch at The Hut. When your up in the Keweenaw, The Hut is a must stop; great food and friendly wait staff. Charlie and the crew have done a marvelous job in bringing The Hut back to glory!!

Monday and Tuesday we saw friends and did some “light” geo fieldwork before getting serious on Wednesday and Thursday, which included a several mile hike across the Keweenaw looking at geologic features. Friday was another rest day (i.e., spent most of the day at the beach) before taking fellow PastyCammer Derek T. out on a geologic trip of the Keweenaw on Saturday. Sunday was another beach day after going to church in the morning. Sunday also meant having the “famous” turkey dinner at Quincy’s. Monday and Tuesday was again visiting with friends before leaving on Wednesday the 8th for Lower Michigan. One highlight on Tuesday is that at Calumet Waterworks we got to meet another PastyCammer; Brooke from Pinckney.

Wednesday evening we arrived in Detroit (specifically, Berkley) to see my Uncle amid dozens of classic autos running up and down Woodward Ave; we forgot about the Dream Cruise!! However, we didn’t stay long as we were on our way to Petrolia and Oil Springs, Ontario. Why go there you ask?? It turns out that not only was a part of my family from there, they also drilled the world’s first commercial oil well just outside of Oil Springs. After spending Thursday in Ontario, we returned to Berkley to visit my Uncle and Aunts again and have dinner at Alex’s on 12 Mile. We actually left that evening to return to Houston, arriving safely Saturday afternoon.

Sorry we didn’t get a chance to meet up with you Mikie and Precious; with the car issues earlier it threw a monkeywrench into our plans just a little and compressed a lot of things. We didn’t miss much though of the Dream Cruise; there were plenty of nice rides from Alex’s to see on 12 Mile/Coolidge. The Dr. and I had also planned to have lunch with Mary and her husband but with the passing of her mom the day we were to have lunch, those plans got shelved. I believe a raincheck is in order Mary ;-)

In all it was a fantastic trip. Beautiful weather throughout and Louie, the trusty green Neon, made it with no problems. After this trip, the Dr. and I have determined that Houston is only a temporary stop on the road of life and that someday very soon we will be returning to the Keweenaw (or the upper Great Lakes in general) not on vacation, but to return home to the greatest people on Earth!!

Raining hard again today after all day rain on Sunday here in Mid Hillsdale County. Will not be able to check the rain gage today as I am babysitting the Grandson.
Have a nice day everyone and enjoy the rain.

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 10:37 am:

Capt. Paul, I am emailing you a picture my daughter took at Calumet waterworks of the shoreline. You and the Doc are in it frolicking in the waves (or was that agate hunting?)

By David (Dave) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 10:38 am:

Did you leave on August 15 for the LP? We had a very nice visit in Mohawk the weekend of August 11 to 13. We will be back for Labor Day weekend.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 11:02 am:

If it doesn't stop raining here soon, (NE Ill)we will have to build the ark. Last week we got about 6 inches. Night before last, 3" and another inch last night. Supposed to rain all day today and for the next 4-5 days. The ground is completely saturated. There is widespread flooding as the Kishwaukee, Rock Rivers, and Coon Creek just keep going up, up, up. People are being evacuated and some places are already disaster areas. There is water here I have never seen water. And the mosquitoes! They are about to carry us all away. I feel so bad for all the animals that have to live outside. You can't be out for even a minute without Deet.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 11:34 am:

(Continuing today's CamNotes) I thought that the reason for limiting the amount of the larger Great Lakes fish that you consume was the levels of PCB's and mercury and other industrial waste in the fish. It has been awhile since I have read something on it, so I could be wrong.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 11:42 am:

If the remnants of Tropical Storm Erin come up this way, we could all be in for more deluges. Oklahoma was inundated yesterday, causing mega problems.

Our local meteorologist said last night that we need to watch out here in mid-Michigan because those things usually head up this way, and when they do, they really dump rain here. It's out of our hands, but if people need to make preparations, maybe they should start thinking about it.

If it comes this way, I just hope that some of it makes it up to the UP, where they really need it. :-)

Hey Mikie! Our todays paper has an article and pictures of some of the participants at the Great Lakes Feis held at the Lansing Center this weekend. Maybe your Andrea is in there! Good luck and wish her congratulations for me please. ( Lansing State Journal.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 02:06 pm:

One of the girls has on Andreas old dress, but unfortunatly she isn't pictured there. Dresses cost about $1000 to $2000 depending on how elaborate they are.

Oh great!!! that's bound to start a rumor or two on here.... ;-)

By paul (Pungvait) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 03:47 pm:

at one time it was common practice to flush directly into the lake. the DSS&A outhouse at the Houghton County Historical Society was originally mounted on timbers over the Portage. Jack Stevens told me when he was a boy, swimming in the Portage involved keeping one eye peeled for floaters.

By Uncle Chuck @ Little Betsy (Unclechuck) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 06:03 pm:

Yeah Capt. Paul, what was that??? LOL

By Beverly, San Jose (Beverly) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 07:04 pm:

It looks like Grampa Mikie is going to have to dig deeper. Andrea needs a new wardrobe for more competetions. "Poor Mikie"

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, August 20, 2007 - 10:20 pm:

We were....... agate frolicking!!!
