We spotted a bunny in the thimbleberry patch 8 years ago on the Pasty Cam.

The state of Michigan is going to check 4 bridges of the same design as the one in Minnesota that collapsed. The Cut River Bridge and The old Eagle River Bridge which is now for pedestrians only.

Top 'o the mornin' all. Another steamy day in NW Illinois. Oh well makes the corn grow. But I wish I was back in the piney woods of the UP for another weekend.

By Charles In Esky (Charlesinesky) on Friday, August 3, 2007 - 08:07 am:

This is for Kay Moore. Oh, but she will hate this. He, he! When
I took the dog out a while ago, I had to put my jacket on. It has
been hot and muggy here in Esky for a few days, but I guess that
is gone for a while. It's lovely this morning. Oh, and somehow
farmers here do manage to grow corn. Nothing like downstate,
but, still, they do. Tomatoes would be another story, I suspect,
at least in commercial quantities.

My cat keeps an eye on a bunny who likes to hop around our yard at night. This dry weather, however, has turned all of the little fella's greens to crispy dried stalks. Must be getting a salad drive-thru at the BK in Callie.

They have a great section in the Key Ingredients exhibit about how folks in the Dundee/downriver area eat muskrats. Not all that smaller than a rabbit, but I'm not sure what they taste like.

For those that weren't around yesterday, I posted some upcoming events going on with the food exhibit over here:

Good Morning, Everyone! TGIF! It's going to be another hot, humid day here in mid-Michigan today. My MTU son & I were discussing the big difference in weather between Midland & Houghton last night. :-(

That's a big bunny, at least by the standards around mid-Michigan, where we have little cotton tails hopping around the gardens and yards.

Speaking of my MTU son, he & I were thinking that the bridge to be inspected was the newer wood pedestrian bridge in Eagle River, since it is the same design as the one that failed, although it is wood, not steel. Personally, I'm not worried about that one because the ones they are worried about were built of steel, made in the 1950's and 60's, when the steel was not as good as that of today. Also, a pedestrian bridge does not carry much of a load, compared to an Interstate bridge, nor does it carry the traffic patterns, etc. I would be more interested in the Cut River bridge. Does anyone know when that one was built?

The Cutriver bridge had renovation somewhat recently--there was a big detour to drive around it. Hope they check it though, and all Michigan bridges.

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Friday, August 3, 2007 - 09:21 am:

"recently" might be a relative term, since they are saying that there are major structural problems with bridges built as recently as the 90's.

I am restraining myself here from making a political opinion comment!

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Friday, August 3, 2007 - 09:24 am:

Thanks for the link, Rjewell! I had a picture of the Cut River Bridge in my mind's eye, but seeing it in the picture really reinforces it. That bridge really looks a lot like the one in Minneapolis, and it is an older bridge than the Minneapolis one (1967).

I'm not a civil engineer, and I don't have access to the plans for each bridge, but I would guess that the Cut River bridge has a greater margin for safety in the design load vs the real load on it than the Minneapolis one, and it certainly has a lot less traffic on it. It should be thoroughly inspected, though, none the less.

i just checked out Bill Skriba's link from yesterday - and saw my buddy and ex-neighbor Nick Faller on the Sykes

I notice the bridge site credits Charles Hyde for the text on its site. He has several interesting books on the Copper Country and on Michigan history.

Charles in Esky, you're right, I'm not a happy camper hearing that you needed a jacket this morning for heavan's sake! I must say it's not quite as humid today and I was able to deadhead many of the petunias on the desk before it got too warm. I always said I have some Eskimo in me along with the UPer blood! Much more tolerant of cold than heat! And humidity sufficates me. By the way I told my driver/daughter that I knew of someone who lived in the area when we went thru Escanaba/Gladstone on our way to the big bridge last weekend. About where is Esky anyways? Enjoy you weather.

Opps...I was on the deck, not the desk (giggle)

Good day to all! Nice bunny pic! My 2 sons just went south of Minneapolis last night. Was thinking of that bridge! They had taken a roundabout way anyway. They traveled at night since they've never been on an interstate but made it! That bridge may have had a longer span to it also? Too bad that had to happen before they do something! Have a nice day! At least it feels a lot better with that NW breeze here in Champion.
