Bald Eagles are such majestic birds, with the white heads and tail feathers, no wonder they represent our country as the National Bird. It's always neat when you spot one, but when you have the opportunity to capture two on film, like Stanley Spruce did on Keweenaw Bay recently, you should consider yourself quite lucky! These birds were on the "endangered" list at one time, then upgraded to being a "threatened" species. Finally on June 28, 2007, the Interior Department took them off the Endangered Species list, but they are still protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act and the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act. Under these Acts, it is unlawful to collect eagles, eagle parts, nests or eggs without a permit. The exception to that rule, is for Native Americans, since these emblems are traditional in their culture.

The final shot of the twins together reminds me of the old Doublemint Gum ads.

With all the effort and time put forth to save these majestic birds, lets hope we'll now be able to salvage the priceless air, water etc. of our planet. The greening of our surroundings is for all, even those who don't believe in it and those who do appreciate the wonders of our Creator's hand.

Following the Eagle comeback has always been included in my bird watching days in the Keweenaw. Once when out along the Jacobville lake front area with my two children and dog I spotted a Bald Eagle approching. I was excited and I yelled at the kids to look up. As I pointed at it, it got closer. Then when it flew over, we could see it was a Crow with a white hamburger bun in his beak. To this day my two children agree, the embarrased look I had on my face was more fun than actually seeing a real Bald Eagle

What a hoot, Theresa! It's a good one when someone can tell a silly antedote about themselves.I can just see your exspression. Don't we love stories about our family fun.

Love the Eagles and all they stand for. Heading to my pals in SE Alaska. Will "chum" for the eagles from their porch. Left over herring from day's bait will be tossed high and out. In they come to swoop it up.

Way to spend some time watching birds. Very nice.

Beautiful shots! We also enjoy seeing eagles whenever we go on trips. They are such a majestic bird. An especially good place to look for eagles is between LaCrosse, Wisconsin and going into Minnesota. Follow the road up north for a ways (we have gone all the way up to Red Wing, Minnesota) and there are many viewing sites to see these beautiful birds along this road. We went up there one time around in late February, and there were all kinds of eagles on the ice feeding where there were a few open spots of water.

OUR TRIP TO "GOD'S COUNTRY", LAST JUNE FOR MY UNCLE'S MEMORIAL SERVICE. THE WIFE AND I DECIDED TO TAKE A RIDE. WE WERE COMMING BACK VIA 5 MILE POINT ROAD FROM EAGLE RIVER. THERE IN A BIRCH TREE WAS A BALD EAGLE. AS I SLAMMED ON THE BRAKE'S AND REACHED FOR MY CAMERA AT THE SAME TIME,I JUMPED OUT TO SEE THIS WONDERFUL EAGLE. IT WAS GONE. I WALKED ABOUT 100 YARDS , AND THERE IT WAS, SITTING IN THE TOP OF A PINE TREE. I WAS IN AWE AT FIRST THEN I TOOK A PICTUER OF THE EAGLE IT'S BACK WAS TO ME, THEN IT TURNED AND TOOK FLIGHT. IT MADE MY OTHERWISE SAD TRIP INTO ONE OF WONDER AND EXCITEMENT. I'AM SO GLAD THEY ARE BACK.

The "twins" are probably a breeding pair. They mate for life and stay together year-around. The female is larger than the male and is shown in the third photo on the right. Here is a closer photo that shows the size difference quite clearly. http://gallery.pasty.com/kscheibach/albus39/DSCN0964a.jpg.html The first eagle I saw in the lower peninsular was in 1991. Before that I had to go to the UP or Wawa Ontario to see them. Today they can be seen in most areas of the state. Their resurgence is quite extraordinary. Here is another photo of a female landing on a perch with the male. http://gallery.pasty.com/kscheibach/albus39/P1030464a_filtered.jpg.html

I've never seen two eagles together! That's awesome!

Every time I go down the Peshtigo River (near Athelstane, Wisconsin), I see an Eagle. It's always a sure bet!

Ken those are some fantastic images you caught!. The one with the rainbow was spectacular. But love the "buried treasure" especially. Thanks

Hello. Does anybody have pictures of the "letters" that used to be at the Calumet/Laurium Airport that children used to play on?

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Saturday, July 14, 2007 - 06:00 pm:

Hilarie Alwine (Halwine), when my husband was living and healthy,
sometimes he would see many of them flying in our area
(Jacobsville). One time he was outside and spotted seven of them in
the air at one time. It was truly awesome. I wish I had been home to
see all of them. I've seen as many as 3 at one time, but more
usually it's a pair. We have a nesting pair a few driveways down,
and in the right season, you can hear the kids "squawking." The
U.P. is a wondrous place to live alright!

Just wanted to add 2 cents worth from Florida...we have lots of bald eagles here as well. We have a nest in our 'back yard' (167 acres that adjoins our property) that has been there for most of 12 years at least that I know of. I say 'most' because a few years back junior didn't want to leave home. Mom and Dad were patient for nearly 3 years and finally dismantled the nest ot get rid of him. Different sort of eviction proceedings. :) The tree was a couple of years empty but now has been rebuilt. Urban renewal. Have yet to see another little one, but keeping our eyes peeled.
When they fly over the house by the shadow they cast at certain times of day, you'd think there was a plane going over. Really does get your attention even when you are otherwise engaged and not looking out the window! We love our eagles!!

By AČ in Cedar Bay (Andytofu) on Sunday, July 15, 2007 - 04:59 am:

Last night I saw three very large dark birds with white heads majestically soaring above the field off Sarkela Road and Cedar Bay Road. If they were in fact bald eagles, I've been priviledged to see something extraordinary.

By Bill Howard (Whoward) on Sunday, July 15, 2007 - 06:18 am:

Eagles are wonderful birds and smart too. Maybe I should start dismantling my house. It must have worked for them. lol
