As we've been tracking the history of the Pasty Cam eight years ago, we're well along the second year of this daily feature. By that time we had begun to receive requests for specific places around the U.P. (Keweenaw in particular), and the shot above was the fulfillment of one of those requests. It's Smith Fisheries, beyond Bete Grise, along the way to Montreal Falls.

Top 'o the Mornin' to all. A bit rainy this morning here in NW Illinois. But we can use the moisture for crops and gardens. Hope it clears enought for some folks' outdoor activities. Such as Deb and Ron's family wedding which I believe is on a beach. Blessings to the couple.

Hot, dry, smokey in Idaho. The drone of the slurry plane just broke the early morning silence. Have a great day.

It's going to get toasty here; Sharon's cam shows rain showers. If it gets too hot here, I'll just shut the windows and look at the view from Pastycam 8 years ago. Great way to spend my dreaming time.

We were out at the Smith Fisheries and the Mouth of the Montreal over the 4th by boat. It was a beautiful day, calm water, it's a nice boat ride along the shore, we even saw an eagle on the bluff. Wish I was there now.

Cloudy and cool here on the southern shores of Lake Michigan. Only six more days until I am in Michigan...and hopefully not too much longer after that I will finally be home in Michigan for good :)

Hello to all from Rainy Grand Rapids. I am actually doing some family research on the Stephen J Paull family. He immigrated from Cornwall England to the Houghton County, Osceola Township area where he was a miner then turned minister. He married Albreatha Bennets on Oct 23, 1901 in Osceola Township and had 8 children. One is my husbands grandfather. We have no pictures of the family and was wondering if anyone knows of this family. Please contact me Kris (Adams) Paull at kpaull214@wmconnect.com.

Thank you

Todays old photo posted on What's Up looks like it could be taken along the Atlantic coast of Ireland. Beautiful view.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, July 14, 2007 - 02:47 pm:

The bluff in the background could surely pass for a beach terrace left over from glacial times when the lake was much higher than today. I believe that bluff is made up of basalt and rhyolite; one extremely common rock, and one that is not so common on the peninsula......

Hey Capt. Paul. You'd be the one to ask...is it pronounce bay-salt or bass- salt? Ever been to the national park-like area in Northern Ireland where the whole area is made of basalt? It's so weird but so fasinating. You walk the paths and instead of rocks like we're used to, its all columns of this basalt at different heights and levels . Wish I had take a bunch of photos. Don't know where my brains were that day. Just fasinating!!

mskatie again. Just looked up on internet about that place in northern Ireland. It's called the Giant's Causeway. I guess I'll just have to go back and see it all again. It's been since 1980 so it's time again, right?

Sur5er--Good for you!

Japei--Good to have you back.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, July 14, 2007 - 11:00 pm:

It really depends on where your at as to how it's pronounced. I have always pronounced it "ba-salt". However in other parts of the world, especially England, it's "bay-salt" and in Australia it's "bass-alt". It's all the same rock, just pronounced a little different depending on where your at. It also lets people know where your from when you pronounce it.

It is indeed the Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland. If you go across to Scotland, you can see the same thing on the west coast. The rock is common basalt, but because of cooling and shrinkage, it has that columnar appearence. Geologists have a special name for it; it's called, what else, columnar jointing. The age on those are about 60 million years and formed from intense volcanic activity when highly fluid molten rock was forced up through fissures in the chalk beds to form an extensive basalt plateau. This plateau extends all the way across to Scotland.

I have never been to Scotland/Ireland, even though almost all of my ancestors are from that part of the world......

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Saturday, July 14, 2007 - 11:04 pm:

I forgot to mention that you don't need to visit Ireland to see columnar jointing. Devils Tower in Wyoming is a prime example, as it Devils Postpile in California. For something a little closer to home, there is supposedly a little area in the Keweenaw where you can see columnar jointing. The Dr. and I are going to check out this spot in a couple weeks when we are there; 21 days from now, we will sitting on the shores of Superior watching the sun go down......
