Introducing Hans Solo! At least that's what Bill and Eloise Haller call this Sand Hill Crane that returns each spring to spend the summers near their place in Bete Grise. Bill says they have a number of seasonal critters that return each year, to which he and Eloise have given names, like Freddie the Fox, Edie the Fisher, Jack and Jill - a pair of cranes and Napoleon, a less than normal size hummingbird, that makes up for its size in feistiness. They figure Hans Solo here, is an unmatched bachelor who most likely disguises himself as a pink flamingo during the winter months down south. Sort of looks like one standing there on one leg like that, don't you think?

I knew that had to be Bete Grise. Those darn flamingos have found their way back here too.

Don't you know I want to be one of the returning regulars. Stuck in the south, though.

Oh no, please tell me those aren't Joyce Tormala birds that came down with bird flu!!
It's a beautiful morning here in the Keweenaw!

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 - 08:57 am:

I see sand hill cranes all the time, I cannot be blamed for the flamingos. Animals make noise so I can keep them alive.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 - 11:29 am:

That's awesome, Bob! We looked all over Yellowstone & Grand Teton National Parks for moose and never found one. I hope you took some pictures?

Thanks for the alert. Moose are huge & if you hit one with a vehicle, there would be no winners, to say the least.

By Marcia H. (Livinindenver) on Wednesday, May 30, 2007 - 12:34 pm:

I also have yet to see a moose...been exploring out here in Colorado and haven't come across any yet. I would like to see a picture if you have any...

Since when did Flamingo's start wearing camo to look like Sandhill's??

Looking at the second photo, appearently he's a real knockout with the lady Flamingo's.........

By Dennis J Jarvi (Djarvi) on Sunday, June 3, 2007 - 07:23 am:

Sand hill crane's make too much noise, pink Flamingo's i could do without, but the moose are really cool. I saw 3 hanging at Deer lake a couple years ago. Wow are they hugh and look prehistoric. My camera could not get a good picture, need a better camera. Love the U.P.
