A postcard pretty scene from eight years ago. Today we're looking at the coldest weather of the year, with temperatures not moving above zero until Monday. And another foot of snow is possible. Finally, in February, it is looking like winter around here :-)

First Postmorning

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 07:52 am:

Good morning. Looks beautiful in the UP...snow.cold and all!

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 08:21 am:

Good Morning from K-Town anyhow!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 08:57 am:

A cold good mornin' to all!
Now I know what happened to David; he got beat on the head too many times in the sauna!!!
Wonder if Barbie made him sleep in the attic again?

By John W (Jwahtola) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 09:22 am:

Nice picture. Very cold this morning. It is 0 here in far southern Michigan.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 09:49 am:

Morning. It's about 5 degrees here in Northeastern IL. But you sure wouldn't know it's that warm with the wind swirling the new snow. Brrrr.

By Janet Boatman (Janetnwohio) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 10:22 am:

Good Morning from a very cold Ohio and going to get colder. To me it is stay in the house as much as possible time of the year.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 10:25 am:

Bright sun shiney day here in Corryton,TN.Wish it was 82 instead of 28 and it is windy so have to put on some wind screen.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 10:36 am:

I see some put up new pictures in profiles. One in particular looks like it was taken by the
Pop-a-rotc.Ya I know spell check didn't give anything to work with, you get the snow drift?

By Vicky P (Vickyp) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 10:50 am:

Too darn cold to go outside today (suburban Detroit area). I wonder if that's Joanie's husband with her in the photo?

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 10:50 am:

Good Morning everyone! It's 0 and blowing snow
here in Houghton. Went shopping at Wal-mart
early this morning, couldn't wait to get home.
Visibility out on the road isn't good.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 11:11 am:

Good Morning!

We were not all that cold this morning, with a low of +2, at least in comparison with what we will see the next several days! You know it is going to be ridiculously cold when our local metereologist cringes about the forecast, since he loves the cold & snow.

David H -- I'd be happy with 70, gee, I'd even be happy with 50 or 60, instead of the frigid air mass that's coming in tonight here!

I hope you all are managing to stay warm!

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 11:26 am:

3:00 a.m. we had -17 here in GB. Now is a balmy 1+
More frigid temps on the way. I sure wish I could put pictures on my page. I try but it seems they won't load. Picasa is what I store pictures in.
That second picture reminds me of the days when I had to ski across the fields to get to my grandmother's for sauna. Especially in March with the winds.

Mary Drew says: Tom, I just sent you an email about adding a picture to your profile page. Let me know if you do not receive it and I can resend it.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 11:28 am:

good morning. been quiet here lately, must be the cold has everyone busy staying warm.

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 11:57 am:

When my brother and I were very young (6 & 4) our folks took us out to our Godparents and this picture reminds me of the ride on their snow sled with the horses pulling us along. Great memory and thanks for sharing.

By Mr. Bill (Mrbill) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 12:23 pm:

DRIVING CONSIDERATIONS

Stop and frequently brush the snow off your tail lights. Yesterday's white out was so bad that you could easily tail-end someone in front of you.

Four way flashers help visibility from behind too.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 01:19 pm:

Well, here's one for the record; Took Joey, very reluctantly, out for a very, very, very, short walk. I put on so many clothes I looked like Ralphie's little brother in "Christmas Story". Remember when "Randy" fell down in the snow and couldn't get up? The same thing happened this morning. I had visions of me trying to roll back home. I had black clothes on and probably looked like a big bowling ball. It was hard getting back up, specially with the wind blowing so hard. If I would have been in "Bear Country" I'm sure someone would have yelled, "SHOOT IT!"

By Julwisc (Julwisc) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 01:34 pm:

COLD! We figured this was finally appropriate weather for snowmobile shopping. We took the plunge yesterday into the Polaris world - should come in real handy after we move to the UP later this year!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 01:58 pm:

Heikki, that was so funny on the Cam notes. Sounds like all the Finnish kids looked forward to getting the switch on their little behinds! Is that like, "no pain, no gain"?

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 02:22 pm:

I sure wish I was as lucky with the good looking men as Joanie!! (This is a rare weekend e-amil from me.) I don't have computer at home, I'm at a friend's house. I hope you are all staying warm. It's nasty here in Lansing. Cold temps and blowing snow. Brrrr....talk to you on Monday.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 02:31 pm:

One thing about being all bundled up like that, Joanie: it would break your fall, so you would be less apt to hurt! I hope you are ok! I do know the feeling when you are on the ground, all bundled up, wondering the best way to get up. It's like a turtle, on its back, trying to roll over & get moving again.

Did Joey keep licking your face, to be sure you were ok? My dogs would for me. In fact, they would make it almost impossible to get up, because they would be all over me, with their concern.

Stay warm everybody! For those who like to play in the snow: the snow's not going anywhere in this frigid weather. It will be around for quite a long time, so you can play in it when it is a bit warmer. Frostbite is not a good thing! They are talking about putting up wind chill advisories in a number of areas, so it is something to be concerned about.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 03:04 pm:

Yep, Joey kept licking my face and thought I was playing with him. I tried using the water ski method of trying to get up using him and the leash but I couldn't get him off of me. Didn't hurt a thing, just a little bit of a chapped face from all the slobering. We live in the country so I couldn't even yell, "Help me, I've fallen and I can't get up"!

By Grace M Wetton (Gmw) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 03:31 pm:

-4 degrees and still snowing here in Houghton.
Didn't see the county snow plow today, hope he comes tomorrow.

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 03:52 pm:

Check out the MTU cam. It is 6 below and they out there working on the statues. Click motion on the "walker cam"
http://www.admin.mtu.edu/urel/cams/

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 04:16 pm:

They don't seem to be there anymore. And, there is an announcement on the Broomball daily schedule for today, "All games past 3:30 pm have been canceled due to weather." I assume that has something to do with the dangerous windchills.
http://www.broomball.mtu.edu/new/

I assume that the university also canceled the statue building activities, due to weather, since I don't see anyone out there now?

We even have a Wind Chill Advisory now here in the Middle of the Mitten. It is really windy & nasty outside now, on top of the frigid arctic air.

By P&G, New Yoopers (Gormfrog) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 04:27 pm:

Culture preserves the map and the records of past journeys so that no generation will permanently destroy the route. Our first Groundhog Day celebration as residents of the U.P. has started a new chapter, new friends mixing with old friends, but the same basics. Burning the Christmas trees, fireworks, food (BBQ, aka "Ground Hog"), recounting the readings and legends..
Hope all had a wonderful, refreshing, Groundhog Day experience!

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 04:31 pm:

Julwisc...Congratulations and welcome to the exciting world of Polaris! Hubby and I have 3 Indy's, 2 of which are mine. Happy Trails!

By JH (Thumbgardener) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 04:40 pm:

Marianne, I just checked and they are out there. Click on the walker cam, motion.

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 05:09 pm:

JH (Thumbgardner), you're right--the kids are out there working on statues again. I had wondered, because they had left their tools out.

I wonder if they just took an early dinner break, or if there are some rules that they can work out in the weather on the statues, but they can only work x minutes, before they take a break of y minutes, to warm up? I don't see anyone working on the statue across Hwy 41, though, (Statue 1 Cam).

I think it's interesting that at least one statue is being worked on now, but that all broomball games for the rest of the day have been canceled because of the weather?

By Marianne Y (Marianne) on Saturday, February 3, 2007 - 10:37 pm:

Do you all know what tonight is? It's so cold, that it's a Three-Dog Night! The only problem is that I only have 2 dogs, and one won't let the other into the bedroom! Humph...Oh well--it's pile on some more blankets, then, I guess. :-)

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 01:42 am:

It's -25 out this evening...and a certain someone(ahem), didn't listen to me about plugging in his semi and he now has frozen fuel. Hope it 'thaws out' in time for work on Monday, eh.

I have discovered that between Da Abbi and Bailey, that Bailey is definately Da UP dog out of the two. Da Abbi wanted no part of being outside in the cold today. Bailey, on the other hand found out the benefit of cold weather today: crunchy snow. She kept rolling on her back in the hard snow, using it as a way to scratch/rub her back. Pretty smart, eh ;)

Meanwhile, Da Abbi ran out the service door of the garage, visited the tree out back, and by the time I had gotten back inside the house, she was on the deck with her nose pressed against the patio door: "mama, let me in NOW!" So it has to be cold outside, if Da Abbi doesn't want to play in the snow ;)

By Danbury (Danbury) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 03:15 am:

It may be cold, inconvenient, dangerous, a general nuisance, but ... wish I could be there. Or Finland - must be great there by now, too.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Sunday, February 4, 2007 - 09:14 am:

Sur5er, husbands never listen but our four-legged friends do, eh?
