Out the Pasty Cam's front window eight years ago.

It seems like winter may make a return to the U.P. with blowing snow yesterday. Driving from Hancock to Calumet, those white-outs just seemed right.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:17 am:

First PostHappy Hump Day! Wow, the snow!

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:20 am:

Snowy, blowy and blustery is the name for that picture this morning! Good Morning.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:21 am:

I got up early and Deb still beat me well good morning all hope you get a lot of snow.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:21 am:

morning

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:23 am:

Sorry, Mikie! Only by 4 minutes though.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:25 am:

David H., Been meaning to tell you that I love the picture in your profile. Is it taken in Tennessee? The background is great?

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:34 am:

Thanx, yes it is Cumberland Cap area in the Smoky's.More of you out there should put a photo up,hey my gosh look at me nothing broke eh?

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:37 am:

I agree with David. I like to go to the Profile section and see what ya'all look like and what ya'all do for a living and such. If you don't know how, Mary can help you with that. Ours was taken on good old Brockway on an extremely breezy day up there in October of last year.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:59 am:

The Great Smoky Mountains are a beautiful place to visit. I love driving around Cade's Cove. I saw a bear there once (back in '77 I think).

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 08:17 am:

My wife's Mother was a Oliver and born in the John Oliver cabin when Crawford Oliver was the last to own it before the Park came in 1932.It only takes us about an hour to drive to Cades Cove.I posted a picture of the cabin afew years ago on here, maybe you can find it.I can't remember how to do that anymoe or i'd put one up now taken just afew weeks ago.I asked Mary to put my e-mail ad.to show up so you all can tell me when i'am being a bad boy.I have things to do,will check back later on.....

By Danbury (Danbury) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 08:36 am:

Hi Deb S. and Mr. Deb, and David Hiltunen - nice to meet you!
Looks like you've got your own personal rain cloud, David.

X'cept four Joanie, you're the only ones who've done that I've found by now.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 08:43 am:

If there existed a good picture of me, I would post it, but there is no such thing. With my winter hibernation fat on, it is not a good time for a picture.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 08:45 am:

I agree, I would really like to see what everyone looks like too!
Danbury, always meant to ask you; what are you standing next to? It looks like a luge run.
David Hiltunen, you're not a bad boy, consider yourself entertaining!
By the way, if you can't post your picture don't you think you should at least post your email address for personal contacting?

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 08:48 am:

Come'on Cindy, no way can you be fat with all that Latino dancing. Ariba!!!!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 08:51 am:

Hey, don't forget Barb has a picture posted. Quite a cute couple!

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 09:02 am:

Morning from GB. No snow yet. Guess the CC will have enough for MTU's statues.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 09:02 am:

I have not been doing enough latin dancing to stay slim and trim. I might have to move to the Carribean so I can dance every day. Wouldn't that be the life....

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 09:38 am:

Well, I'm so fat that when I wear a yellow rain coat people yell; "Taxi"!

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 09:55 am:

My picture of the sunset out my window looks better than any picture of me! Would it be cheating to put my senior picture up? And, no, I don't mean senior citizen!

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 10:32 am:

Top 'o the mornin'all. This is getting interesting now with the profiles and pics. Really like it. Good thing I can't send pics even if I had one to show. Where has this new year gone already...the 10th!? I'm wasting away my winter at home, not getting any art done yet. so busy meeting all the new pasty pics and folks. How interesting we are, aren't we. And from such a varity of places.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 10:59 am:

Ha! Taxi, you're too funny. When I get on my scale, it says "Get off, get off!!"

By Brooke (Lovethekeweenaw) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:02 am:

Amazing that we are all drawn to the copper country yet are in different areas. I stayed with my grandparents summers and wish I were there all the time now.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:08 am:

When I get on the scale it says, "one at a time please"!

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:20 am:

For any of you that can check MTU's webcam of the bridge right now, is that big cloud in the distance 'lake effect' snow coming?

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:26 am:

Oh, what fun to see pictures! I never even explored profiles before.

And speaking of Cades Cove -- one of my favorite places in the world! So calm and peaceful. I remember seeing deer there up close and being so impressed. Now they are in my own yard, up close, and eating all sorts of prize shrubs and bushes in our neighborhood. :(

By Carole (Carole) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:31 am:

Deb, I am sure that my husband and I were up on Brockway the same day. We spent a week in Eagle Harbor and went up there just about everyday.

By k j (Kathiscc) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:33 am:

There is no way I am putting a picture of myself on this website for all to see. I hate pictures of me- they don't look anything like the one in the mirror!(or that skinny person I know is hiding inside the fat suit).
We still don't have any snow here. (Northeastern part of Illinois). What's up with that?

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:42 am:

Boy, this is becoming a "heavy discussion"!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:47 am:

Hey, I've been put on here without my knowledge. Nobody told the fat kid he was going public! Oh well, too late now. Have a good day all!
Mr. Deb

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 12:25 pm:

Don't worry Ron they are looking at Deb and not you. Don't forget your saying that round is a shape too.

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 12:30 pm:

Is sharpei a shape? Woof woof!! Last time a tried on a swimsuit, I looked in the mirror and it looked like there were sharpei puppies hanging off my back.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 12:38 pm:

Someone very close to me felt the same way about pictures because of weight. On 9/26/06 that person had weight loss surgery and today has 89 lbs.less to carry around!
Nice to see all of you that are not hiding behind the monitor.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 12:39 pm:

Cindy, Why are we all so critical of ourselves, tonight I am going to my reunion, we meet monthly, and am amazed that there are so many people that I know who are absolutly nothing like they were in High School. This is both in personalities and shapes. Grey hair, loose fitting clothes and probably some false teeth all make up the alumni. As you know there will be one person who hasn't changed at all. I think the rest of us should ban him from coming.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 12:59 pm:

I'm so fat when my beeper goes off people think I'm backing up!

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 01:14 pm:

It's easier to be critical than to exersize!
Mr. Deb

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 01:20 pm:

Danbury (Danbury) says:
"Looks like you've got your own personal rain cloud, David."

If so, I hope that "personal rain cloud" doesn't work for David Hiltunen like the "personal rain cloud" did for Joe Btfsplk (from Al Capp's Li'l Abner!

By Tom Karjala (Tom) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 01:58 pm:

What a good reminder-----unlucky Joe Btfsklk.
Perhaps Mary will have to inform us how to send a picture of ourselves or such to put on our email site.

Here you go Tom...
To upload a picture to be displayed on your Pasty Cam profile, you first need to access your "Profile Editor". You can do so on the Pasty Cam page (the one with the entire week of smaller pictures), in the white box above the most recent picture, you'll find the words, "Click here" to register or maintain your profile. Click on the underlined "Click here". Then login with your Pasty Cam registration info.

At the top of this next page, you'll see, "Profile Editor Options". Click on "Picture", that will take you to that section where you'll see the instructions on what to do next.

The most important thing is to make sure the resolution (size) of your picture is not too big, otherwise it won't upload. Ideally it should be around 660 pixels wide, which is the width of our daily Pasty Cam photos.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me at: mdrew@pasty.com

Hope this helps you to add your picture for all to see!
Mary Drew

By Cindy Pihlaja Russell (Gone2long) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 01:59 pm:

Mikie -- That's cool that you get together with your classmates once a month. You must all be very good friends. I have been out of school for 30 years. I can't believe I've done ANYTHING for 30 years. It's good to keep old friends. Yes, we are always the most critical of ourselves. Would you speak to your friends the way you speak to yourself? I doubt it. We are pretty tough on ourselves.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 02:16 pm:

I used to be obsessed with my weight, as I got older I realized that I was too concerned with what people thought of me. Well you know what? I finally realized they were in the same boat as me, they didn't care about me, they cared about themselves. So, now I am comfortable with myself, happy with myself and don't worry about what people think anymore. I walk, (the dog makes me), at least 2 miles a day and feel just terrific!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 02:17 pm:

Oh, by the way, in my profile picture, I'm the one in the blue sweatshirt!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 04:37 pm:

Joe Btfsplk - ne'er heard of that. Sure wasn't thinking of anything like that.

Perhaps I should ask first what a luge run is ... you didn't just insult my boat, did you?

I'm standing next to a little push lorry at a portage in northestern Germany. The blue and grey thing on the wagon is a boat, a Klepper Aerius. That's a collapsible kayak. It has been in my family longer than I am.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 04:42 pm:

Oh my gosh Danbury, I should have known it was a portage, it was the kayak that didn't look familiar, so sorry! A luge run is the bobsled course, did I spell it wrong? Didn't mean to insult your family heirloom.
By the way, isn't Danbury a chocolate company?

By Margaret, Amarillo TX (Margaret) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 04:44 pm:

A luge run is a chute for a luge sled--like in the olympics. That's my sport--women's luge.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 05:11 pm:

Thank you Margaret and wow, very proud of you!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 05:15 pm:

Should perhaps added an indication that I was just kidding on the insult part.
Klepper boats aren't very common in the US, but they do sell, or maybe did, and there's a similar design built stateside (PakBoat or soms such?). Kleppers have successfully been used on expeditions, in places like Alaska, around Cap Horn and similar.
We just cruised on rivers and lakes, and now ere I could use it again, I'd have to get a new skin.

I don't know about chocolate - I derived my tag from something else.

By Therese (Therese) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 05:20 pm:

Mister Deb, you look fine, but that is one sorry sweatshirt you are wearing. Some teams just don't deserve fans.

--Nevertheless, a Tiger fan

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 05:23 pm:

Yeah, Mr. Deb you need to dress up your wardrobe. Now take me, I get all my clothes custom made at Shaw's Tent And Awning.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 06:00 pm:

Well, seeing as how we were in Michigan at the time, and it was almost football season............ Being from Minnesota, there was one shirt(besides the Vikings) that I couldn't wear. You guessed it, the Cowboys!!!!

Mr. Deb

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 06:02 pm:

Looks like a lot of fun Danbury! Good cardio exercise!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 06:14 pm:

Oh yuk, not the Cowboys!

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 06:21 pm:

Danbury, I wonder if you know of a town in Germany called Pfaltz, my great grandfather was the count of that town and I am trying to check way back to my heritage. My last name was Pfaltzgraff, I would appreciate any help!

By k j (Kathiscc) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 06:42 pm:

Hey- Deb- I think you mean Cadbury chocolate. As a true chocoholic, I know all the names. But you know what? Plain old cheap Hershey's works just fine.

By Jacobsville (Barb) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 07:03 pm:

Oooooo, but have you tried the Hershey's chocolate truffles yet? It's
dark chocolate. Mmmmmmmm.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 10:42 pm:

How come it is that when weight is the subject the talk somehow moves to candy? LOL
Mr. Deb

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Wednesday, January 10, 2007 - 11:52 pm:

k j, I like Hershey chocolate the best but I love Caramello's and I think they're made by Cadbury!!! Anything chocolate and caramel is okay by me.

By Danbury (Danbury) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 04:11 am:

Sure is, Janie, of the nice and quiet variety. Just doesn't happen too often. :(

Joanie: "Pfalz", not Pfaltz, is palatinate - an area ruled by a count palatinate, and bigger than just a town. Despite there being some regions named xyz palatinate, or similar, it is not a specific name in itself, and I do not know a place in Germany called Pfaltz. Anyhow, it sure may be that there's a count palatinate somewhere in your ancestry, but for more specific information, I'd suggest research on genealogical sites.

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 05:39 am:

Speaking of Genealogy, we finally created the "Ancestors 2007" page and "New Arrivals 2007" here in the discussion forum. You will now see the links at the top of each "What'sUP" page.

I must say about today's blast from the past picture, it is a favorite of mine - taken out our front window in Eagle River eight years ago, as the Pasty Cam was nearing completion of its first full year. What a different sight this morning, with no snow at all. We could literally mow the grass here today!

By FRNash/PHX, AZ (Frnash) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 10:00 am:

Re: "'Pfalz', not Pfaltz, is palatinate - an area ruled by a count palatinate":
See Wikipedia:Pfalz an entry that is quickly re-directed to Palatinate.

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 10:25 am:

Thanks Danbury! Thanks FRNash!

By Danbury (Danbury) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 01:18 pm:

Guess where I doublechecked ...

By Gonna be a Yooper (Joanie) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 01:53 pm:

Where?

By Sandra H. (Wasayooper) on Thursday, January 11, 2007 - 06:29 pm:

I must admit when I joined pasty.com last week, I was afraid to post my profile, even more so my e-mail address and picture. Being a small woman in a large city makes a girl a little paranoid at times. But when I saw that so many others had their profiles, I felt encouraged and added some info about myself. I will add my e-mail address to it later tonight. I'm not sure about the picture though. I am not very photogenic. The photographer always gets mad at me because I break the camera. I do like everyone else's pictures. I would have to say David's cloud is very cool.
