Eight years ago, the Pasty Cam captured a fallen tower. Dubbed "Eino's Tower," it was a privately-built observation tower near Delaware. After its demise the owner built a newer, more wind-resistent tower that continues to stand today.

Capt. Paul....a belated "Thanks" for the basalt story. I think I will need practice saying some of those words before I go public!!
Again, thanks! I haven't been on this site for a few days!!
Stix

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Thursday, November 2, 2006 - 07:47 am:

Your very welcome Stix, just doing the job that I absolutely adore!!

But I feel sorry for Toivo.... where's his tower?? Or, is the reason the new tower is still up is because Toivo helped?? ;-)

is Eino friends with Elmo? Maybe Einosunshine knows....

By JAD, Oscar, MI (Jandalq) on Thursday, November 2, 2006 - 11:58 am:

I am delighted that the Hut has re-opened. But I am sad that two local businesses have closed. Schmitt's Corner store closed on September 17 and the Freda restaurant closed permanently the 2nd week of October. Many folks drove out to Freda to enjoy the beautiful drive, the spectacular view of The Big Lake, and the home-cooked food. And the store was so handy for a quick purchase of milk, canned goods, cereal, ice-cream, newspapers, and whatever. We are sorry to see them go.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Thursday, November 2, 2006 - 06:01 pm:

what a bummer on the closings. I went to the Freda restaurant whenever i had a chance when I was up there...also was owned by my cousin.

By Backhomedon (Backhomedon) on Thursday, November 2, 2006 - 06:17 pm:

I heard that Lindell's in Lake Linden closed. Does
any one know if it will re-open again sometime?

By dlp (Babyseal) on Thursday, November 2, 2006 - 06:52 pm:

Backhomedon: Lindell's closed early this year and have decided to become a seasonal operation. Close early fall and open again for spring/summer. I was bummed, had a $20 gift certificate from the Red Cross fundraiser this summer and they closed before I could use it.
Just my luck.....

By Roger Somero (Rsomero) on Thursday, November 2, 2006 - 09:16 pm:

The tower builder/owner is Elmo Negro.

By Happy to be in the U.P. (Lahelo) on Thursday, November 2, 2006 - 11:28 pm:

By David Soumis (Davesou) The restaurant in Freda is open From Father's Day to Labor Day open Thurs-Mon noon to 9. Closed Tues & Wed. In spring and fall, open Fri 5-9, Sat 4-9, Sun noon to 9........its closed until Father's day next spring.

By Jan and Mike in Herscher (Janandmike) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 12:05 am:

After visiting this site for four years, we finally decided to stop at Lindells this last summer. With our luck it was the day after they closed! Oh well, next summer--a stop at the Hut will also be on the agenda. (and Dreamland, and the White House, and the Ambassadore for pizza)
Capt. Paul, enjoy your geology info. Would never fall asleep while you are informing us. (Good work)

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 03:09 am:

A couple of corrections on Dean's note above. The tower is known as "Elmo's Tower" and it is located at Phoenix, not Delaware. It has appeared on the Pasty Cam several times over the years.

Thanks for clarifying, Charlie.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 09:12 am:

Dave, I was bummed when my dad told me that Clyde was closing his door too. I guess he would have kept it running, but Leo's wife was tired of it so they closed their door. We loved their lake trout! Oh well, everything good comes to an end at some point. Remember when he ran the little root beer stand next to grandma's? That was a great little place too.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Friday, November 3, 2006 - 04:55 pm:

the best hamburgers I have ever eaten in my life came out of that little root beer stand..and the fries too.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Saturday, November 4, 2006 - 07:33 am:

Their chili dogs weren't half bad either. MmmHmm

By Carole (Carole) on Saturday, November 4, 2006 - 07:57 am:

Where is Clydes? Is it the one at the Soo?
