This shot from eight years ago, taken in Calumet, has an interesting juxtaposition between the large colorful tree and the historical home in the background. This year, the color is a bit past peak, but it is still beautiful -- a great time of year to be in the Keweenaw.

I feel bad for you. Hang in there. Will fabreeze help for your house? How the heck do you get that smell out of the house? At least it is a nice day and one can bear to have the windows open, unless the skunk smell is all over your yard too. What a mess.

I have really noticed a lot of dead skunks this fall. Anyone else?

By Sunrise Side MI (Ilovelucy2) on Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 10:05 am:

Lorelei, thanks for your condolances,,, I have to go to get cow manure and peat so I guess it doesn't matter if I have a slight aroma! We live here in the country and its a fact of life, I do have candles going, febreese, Glade and I even wiped down the dog with Bounce fabric softeners. I am sure it will go away soon. heehee :)

By JanieT (Bobbysgirl) on Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 10:19 am:

ILoveLucy2...when our Scottie chased what he thought was a black kitty, we used a product called, Skunk B Gone, give the dog a bath in it and it did help, along with time. If you can get to a Petco or a PetSmart, they have several products available. I know what you're going through! We have had a big raccoon season on our highways here.

By lz (Llamamama) on Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 12:05 pm:

Ilovelucy2 - acid based products help. Tomato juice is popular, as well as lemon. Strong as the little canines will tolerate. Good luck, it all takes time.

Thanks guys,
I have a special shampoo for the little dog( Mitzie) she was my mothers dog and now we are dealing with a bladder tumor.Don't know which is worse..... The shampoo seemed to work (somewhat) but how do you rid the house of PERFUME!!!!! My hubby cannot tolerate the cold and I would leave all the windows open. Thanks for all your suggestions. P.S. it still stinks outside too! Phewww!!! :(

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 02:05 pm:

Deb and Mr. Deb, Have a wonderful and safe trip home to da UP. Did I mention that you guys forgot to stop over at my place and pick me up...and take me with you ;)

ILoveLucy2: Oh my, your day started off with a bang, eh. Now that is one thing I do not miss...the Michigan skunkaroos. I mean, put a dog within a mile perimeter of a skunk, and the darn dog will be guarenteed to find it, eh.
Take Bailey for example...a Michigan dog...bring her here to Indiana and what does she do, but find the one and only skunkaroo that resides in our area and probably all of Indiana.
Anywho, hope things are smelling rosier for you and your doggies. I have found that F'Breeze is a really great skunkaroo deroderizer...not only for everything in the house, but also for the dogs, after they have been bathed...nothing worse than wet dog skunkaroo smell, eh ;)

Glad to see someone else checks out Cornwall Cam. I make that a daily stop after Pasty Cam. Mr Winpenney's photos are excellent. It blows me away to see the tropical palms in the gardens and the lush greenery - but the soutern-most tip of Cornwall is in a warm jetstream. The waves this week were huge - and lots of spindrift.

By Richard Wieber (Dickingrayling) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 01:16 am:

Am I right, that this house is on the north side of Boundry (?) Street?

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Friday, October 6, 2006 - 07:06 am:

Richard, it's on the street in Laurium which goes to the High School, which I've seen called both "School Street" or "1st Street". Just a couple of blocks from Calumet Public Hospital, these days known as Keweenaw Memorial Medical Center.

Most of our "eight-year-ago" pictures were taken by our son Jonathan, but I recall snapping this one myself with the Sony Mavica, on our way back home from church the day before posting it on the web.
