Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Saturday, September 30, 2006 - 11:38 am:

How appropriate that today's memorial photo is from Joe Kirkish. Joe represents the army of volunteers who have poured their lives into serving others at a place you have often seen on Pasty Central during the last decade. This project started as a fund raiser for Still Waters Community Elders Home, which opened its doors on October 1, 1982. Also known as Still Waters Assisted Living Facility, this organization has provided a comfortable home, meals, and living assistance for almost 800 elderly residents of the Copper Country. More than 700 of those individuals have passed on, and we honor their memory as we conclude the old month and begin a new one.

Among the hundreds of volunteers and staff employed at the home during these 24 years, many come to mind who have also passed on to their reward. I could list numerous individuals who helped enable the home to stay open at very critical times in Still Waters' history. People like Charlie Stetter who assisted residents needing a guardian, or John Pippenger who served on the Board of Directors, donating time as well as money, or Darlene Fisher, a hard working staff member whose life ended far short of the average age of those whom she served.

As you may know, two weeks ago Still Waters announced its closng. At 5pm yesterday afternoon, September 29th, the final resident boarded a van bound for her new address, reluctantly leaving the home she had come to know and love. A day ahead of schedule, the close was completed, as all residents of this 70 bed facility bid farewell to the staff which cared for them as they would for their own family.

So Joe Kirkish's lovely Superior sunset is dedicated to the memory of all who served here, lived here, and - in some cases - died here at Still Waters. (I say "here" because that's where I'm sitting right now, in my old office where I spent 11 years as the administrator, now as a volunteer with a small caretaker crew helping with the closure). You are welcome to add the names of friends or loved ones to remember as well.

By the way, this weekend we are inviting Pasty Central visitors to participate in this difficult process of concluding the operations at Still Waters. There are some final expenses and loose ends which need attention. Besides tax deductible donations, there will be some other suggestions on the What'sUP page as to how you may be able to help.

By David Soumis (Davesou) on Saturday, September 30, 2006 - 04:22 pm:

Fall is a great time of the year. My dad and I used to go into the woods a lot during the fall...hunting partridge...and just walking for miles. The smell of falling leaves, the geese flying over, chipmunks running around, an occasional porcupine...deer ... it was wonderful.
My dad, Tony Soumis, passed away July 31. 1983...in the woods, where he loved to be.
I miss him a lot.

By Brad Codere (Bcodere) on Saturday, September 30, 2006 - 04:26 pm:

We were so blessed to have you for our Mom and Dad, and we're now living with such precious memories until one day we're all back together again in the presence of God. With also a special note in memory of my first Afghan Hound, Mr. Sky, who also went to Heaven last month five days after our Mom went. Mom and Dad, you have lots of dog angels with you!

I am very sorry to know that this has happened.
Selfishly, I know, because I have enjoyed the wonderful photographs and those pasties. But I am sorry, too, that so many will be having to leave the home that I know they are used to and love. Thank you for your many years of service, Charlie and Joe Kirkish. You have brightened many days for me.

What a beautiful photo today! It sure is sad that Stillwater is no more. Personally I don't think there is another place like it up there. It was like a real home.

Charlie,

What a beautiful tribute to all of the fine people who have lived at,
worked at and volunteered at, Still Waters. What a hard time it
must be for all of you to say goodbye. I noticed that you wrote
about Charlie Stetter. I will pass that on to my dad when we talk
tomorrow. They were friends. Everytime we would drive by Central
Mine he would mention Charlie Stetter and their friendship.
Keep the faith!
