Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 05:58 am:

Into our third month of the Pasty Cam back in 1998, Jonathan still had plenty of sights to share from his daily commute to Michigan Tech. Over the next year we would become quite dependent on our Internet connection, which was the old 'Portup' at the time. But quite often we would find the connection not to be available, or the server to be down, or no answer to our support calls. Somehow we managed to make it day-by-day through the year, but realized we needed a better, more robust and reliable Internet service. So in May of the following year, Jonathan and I started a new Internet service at our Still Waters offices - Pasty.NET - just to have dependable connections and hosting for the Pasty Central staff and sponsors.

The word got out that there was a new, locally operated Internet Provider in the Copper Country... and Pasty.NET began to grow rapidly, with new members added every day (almost every hour sometimes). It was a learning experience - the need for ever expanding resources, growing our support staff, and eventually moving into nationwide dial-up, wireless, and DSL for the 906 area code.

So back in '98 while these daily pictures and discussion rolled along, there was the parallel development of Pasty.NET, and continued growing demand for home-delivery of the delicious pasties we had been enjoying at Still Waters for years. Soon it would become necessary to expand that side of this project as well... but that's another story.

Good morning :) Trying to get back into the grove of things, and back to working into the wee hours of the night.
Mikie, Has that baby made his appearance yet...or being male, do you think he's lost and afraid to ask for directions?

mornin'

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 07:44 am:

Well Sur5er, Congrats on being the early bird. I've been out walking my dog to get her to do her duty so I can get ready for work but she's a bullhead this morning so she's stuck in her pen outside.

Love the line about little Jack being male and is probably lost and afraid to ask for directions. I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm always on my husband for that.

Stupid Wings! Why can't that team make it out of the first round? Oh well, the Pistons and Tigers won and the Lions didn't lose and that's as good as a win in my book. lol

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 07:45 am:

Jack has arrived at seven pounds twenty six ounces and twenty seven inches long. He woke me up at `3:26 am May 2,2006. So far sister Emma is still asleep. Dog Guiness has had to go out three times so far this morning. This is also the earliest that I have gotten up since I retired. Parents and Precious are overjoyed and all I want to do is go back to bed. Kellys' parents are on their way here to help watch Emma maybe I can get them to change diapers. What do you think am I smarter then them, or will I end up doing it all? Thanks for all the prayers and the concern.

By dlp (Babyseal) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 07:50 am:

Congratulations Grandpa Mike! Hope you post a picture in the new arrival section. Include sister Emma with him.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 08:20 am:

7 lb. 26 oz., eh?

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 08:25 am:

Stupid Wings is right DebS!!!! But, I didn't figure they would make it out of the first round playing the Oilers; the Wings have had problems all year with them....

Congrats Mike, maybe now you can get some sleep. My cousin in Detroit had her baby last night as well at around 10:30; both are doing well.

And for all the guys (and mis-informed ladies) out there just remember, Indian NEVER lost, teepee lost!!!! ;-)

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 08:46 am:

boy have I ever made a large mistake Jack is seven pounds six ounces and twenty inches long. Emma is going to see Jack right now. Cal ended up doing the change job.

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 10:17 am:

Couldn't resist teasing you!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 10:44 am:

I enjoy being teased, someone in my life [Precious] has been teasing me for forty years and I have never teased her back. Ya sure and if you believe that one did you here that there is going to be a second bridge from White City to Chassle? Marsha I am not an early riser and my mind doesn't work well prior to ten in the morning. Or maybe it is eleven, I know it is later then when I got up this morning. have to pick up Precious from work and take her to see Jack and Kelly.

By Cotton (Cotton) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 11:55 am:

Mike-congratulations on the newest member of your family. I was going to tease you about his weight (26 oz) & length (27 inches) but I was too late. Where'd you hear about the second bridge? It should be from Chassell to Dollar Bay. I've been thinking we need one for years. Would cut the miles to Hubbell for sure. I heard from one of Aunt Cecil's granddaughters thru a email the other day. Remember Aunt Cecil from Sandusky, Ohio? We're expecting our 9th grandchild in October. A GIRL!! Will give all of you progress reports in the next few months. Hey- it's good news for a change for me to post to you. haha

By Marsha, Genesee/Aura (Marsha) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 01:20 pm:

We could use that bridge when we go from our cottage in Aura to the Harbor Haus for lunch!

By lz (Llamamama) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 02:03 pm:

Mike, Congrats!!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 02:27 pm:

Thanks all, Justin and Emma are taking naps right now Precious saw Jack and he is beautiful probably the best looking baby so far not including Andrea who leads the pact. I feel sorry for people who have ugly grandkids, all of my friends and family have beautiful ones except for my buddy Larry they look just like him. Only did that since he is over looking what I am typing. Cheryl I remember when Uncle Lorenz died, I think that was the only time that I was at Cecil's house I never knew the family down there. I allways knew your family and Uncle Irvings since they were the closest in age to me. Paul and I were born one month apart and spent a good part of our childhood together. Nine I guess I will have to get on Justin to start on a third one since the girls allready have three. I would like to get all of the cousins together some time the ones in Indiana have a reunion every summer and if any one is interested I will keep them apprised of the event. Leonard Hartmans son contacted me because of this site.He was Uncle Charlies Chaput grandson.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 02:51 pm:

Capt. Paul, congrats on the new member of your family. I am curious is the Capt. a military rank, or is it an honorary title? You come across as very well educated and well informed. Where I live the HOA doesn't bother with me anymore. They objected to the workshop on my property but lost their case in court. The Judge is a woodworker also. Got to know when to pick your fights. We are losing a lot of ash trees here in MIchigan and I have seen more and more of this type of sculpture. I wish I had the talent to do this type of woodworking. Can you tell it is raining here and I cant go outside? Bored.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 03:17 pm:

Congrats Grandpa Mikie :) Don't forget, that we want pictures. When Grandpa Bruce had his grandbaby a few months ago, he sent us pictures, which we gals on Pasty Cam kept emailing around, to each other, because we love baby pics. Just so you know how it's done ;) ROFL.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 04:07 pm:

Oh stop it Mikie, your going to give me delusions of greatness, lol!! But thank you for the compliment. I don't think of myself as being an expert on mining/geology/history of the Keweenaw, just someone who loves what they do and sharing that info with all the Pasty cammers; I hope everyone enjoys it too ;-)

The Capt. title comes from my days working at Quincy where I could do everything from drive the tram, give tours, mine maintenance, giftshop, etc... just like the mine captains of old. The name was given to me by numerous people, including Dr. Nat., so the name stuck around.

By Pennie (Trolldiva) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 04:10 pm:

Congrats Mike! Glad that everyone is healthy! I have been checking pasty.com every day to see if that baby was here yet. :)

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 06:40 pm:

Mikie, Would tease you about the size of that baby but I think you've been teased enough. Sure am happy for you guys. He's been a long time comin' eh? Emma will be so excited when he comes home and she can play dolly with him. Congrats to you and your whole family. Hope Joseph continues to do well.

By Charlotte, Mishawaka, IN (Charlotte61) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 07:21 pm:

Deb S. to answer your question on yesterday's What's UP. I got the t-shirt that says Bridge $2.50 Pasty $3.50 Trip to the Upper Peninsula
Priceless. It is always priceless when I get to the UP.

At last the rain has ended. I was really getting sick of it. The kids at school are cranky with the dark rainy days.

I haven't adjusted to our part of IN being the same as MI. I still have a hard time going to bed when it is just dark. Maybe by next Oct. I'll have it figured out. Of course, I could always be like Sur5er and stay up all night. Be fun going to school then.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 08:14 pm:

Congratulations Grandpa Mikie and Grandma Precious. I say grandbabies are our reward for all we put up with our own kids.Mark Twain once said all kids should be raised in barrels. And when they turn 15 the bung hole should be plugged up. :0) But now a granddaughter snuck in a great grandbaby. So precious but Lordy that makes me a great------ and I'm not even 70 yet!

By Charlie at Pasty Central (Chopper) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 08:24 pm:

Congratulations on a successful encore by Bill Haller tonight at MTU, on the history of Senter and the Atlas Powder Company. Quite a turnout, larger than the first time. We hope this story makes its way to a book one of these days, and in the meantime, you can explore some of the history back in the Pasty Cam Archives

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 09:10 pm:

Charlotte, Yeah, that's the one I have. I love it! I try to not wear it as often as I'd like or else I wouldn't have it for long. I just ordered a couple of things off of DaYoopers website. I ordered a zippered hooded sweatshirt and a UP tee. Plus got some crazy magnets for the fridge. Have to have them. One of them was about pasties and how they're NOT paisties! It's cute.

Ms. Katie, My husband got the biggest laugh out of your "congratulations Deb and Mr. Deb". He said it made his day because he wasn't having a good one at work. However, he says that in the future he prefers to be called "WishinIwasUPnorth". Thanks for giving him the laugh. This website's the best.

Oh and Charlotte, we are tired of rain also. It started raining during the night on Thursday and didn't quit until during the night last night. It was awful. I'm talking steady raining. Everybody was getting depressed. We had sun today but the clouds are back and we can expect more of the wet stuff. But in the southern corner of MN they've got tornado watches out. I'm glad that hasn't headed this far north.

Everybody have a great night. Sur5er, I'm sure your day is just beginning, eh? Happy paperworking! And since you're doing so much with the government, could you get the price of gas lowered please? It was just a thought!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 09:54 pm:

Usedtobeayooper, Would definately love to see the gas prices lowered...especially with that truck I drive around that gets two miles to a gallon, in first gear...as long as I am going under 10mph...down hill...and with a gale force wind pushing it ;)
But heck, all I am doing is pushing paper around from one agency to the other...so I don't know what good I would do getting prices lowered ;) Heck, I'm having a hard enough problem getting the government to understand their own laws.

You know, I got wondering...if only Ms Katie's flamingos flew...we could just grab a ride on one of them, and save us all this grief and agony at the gas pumps...whatcha think?

Charlotte, Funny that you are having a hard time adjusting to Michigan time...even though I have been in Indiana for six years, I still cannot get used to Indiana time...you know, with it getting dark at 4pm in the winter, and dark before 9pm in the summer. What's with that?

Mikie, Your brother is a dr. at Henry Ford? What a cowinkiedink. My brother-in-law is a dr. there, also.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 09:57 pm:

And speaking of gas prices...I got this one from the Soo police blotter. Now you know gas prices are high, when what's in your gas tank, increases the blue book value of your vehicle.

SAULT STE. MARIE - Sault Police are investigating the apparent theft of a 1990 van from a residence in the XXXXX. The van was removed sometime between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., apparently connected to a tow truck.

The van's value was estimated at $500 and the gas tank was estimated to be half-full at the time of the theft which would substantially increase the value at today's inflated prices.

There are no suspects in this matter.

By Downstatedon (Downstatedon) on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 - 10:00 pm:

Congratulations Mikie on the new family member...
eventually you'll have one more to cook for!!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 - 12:11 am:

sur5er, My brother the all knowing seer is a PHD and likes to do geneology and has writen several books and many articles about our ancestors mainly the French Canadians. He can prove that we are related to Charlemagn [sp] and also to that singer Madona. Everyone says Jack looks like Precious I think he looks like a little red guy who sucks his fingers and wants everyone to wait on him. Boy do I envy him. As soon as I can get Justin to post the pictures, since I have no idea on how to do something like that. Thanks for all of the congrats really swells my head.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Wednesday, May 3, 2006 - 12:16 am:

Downstate, I think Kelly would not like me to cook Jacks food right now. But can't wait till he is old enough to play with me. Right now I have my grandson Tim trained to sweep my shop, and put the garbage cans back where they belong, after they are emptied by the garbage men. Tim is an Ozanich and is three years old.
