What is it about the Superior shore that keeps luring me back? Now that all the ice is gone, and before people and black flies return, I want to feel that sand under my feet and skip some stones all the way to Isle Royale. Can't you almost taste the color of the sky captured by Katie Keranen? The air doesn't get any fresher than this.

Wonder how long it would take to walk all the way around the Lake? Anybody want to join me?

By Smfwixom (Trollperson) on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 06:43 am:

Beautiful pictures! I'll join you for a walk, Toivo.

Nice shots! When I married my first husband, that's what we really wanted to do for our honeymoon. We wanted to walk all the way around the lake. Young people and their dreams! But wouldn't it be awesome? Wait for me, Toivo!

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 09:01 am:

Beautiful picture of Lake Superior :) What I wouldn't give to be on it's shores right now...and to dig my feet into the cold wet sand.

Toiva, Trollperson and Usedtobeayooper, I will gladly join you in a walk around the lake...what a wonderful, once in a lifetime journey :)

These pics are a "Calgon, take me away" moment! Wait for me on that walk, just got to grab my dogs and their leashes!

Just came from Eagle River and the falls there and at Jacob's Falls are really rolling.Great show of water.

Do you know what the Lake said to the Shore? It didn't say anything, it waved. (insert rim shot here).
I love the photos of the lake, can almost smell the fresh air. Two more months until I can splash around in Superior, yippeeeeee. I'm with you Toivo, no matter how far away I am or how beautiful the country, I am always drawn back to Superior.

do we start at the soo, marquette, or at the western edge of the
porkies?

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 12:20 pm:

I once went around the lake on a motorcycle; the trip was approximately 1,400 miles.

Saw the pictures, and the only thing keeping
us here is work on Monday. But--we're having
a great day planning our July Superior
vacation. We'll be kick starting it with a trip to
Copper Harbor.

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 01:58 pm:

Hey guys, can I join in the walk around the Lake? Someone will have to pull me in a wagon, but if you take turns it wont be too hard. My sister and I went around the lake when we were in our twenties. It was the most beautiful trip I had been on. Been to Europe, seen the oceans nothing compares to the Lake. I also remember that sleeping on the ground around Superior is very rocky, so make sure that you take some kind of materess, and hide your daiquires in the coffee pot and pretend you are drinking coffee. They frown on alcohol in Candian parks.

Hi everyone, I lived down in the U.P. until recently. I now live in
Alaska. But speaking of adventures around Lake Superior, my
brother Joel and I rode bicycles around the lake in 16 days back in
1991. This 1340 mile journey was an enjoyable adventure. We
carried all of our own supplies until the last four day and then our
freinds transported in their van for the days.

Superior pictures today! What a beautiful lake.

By Charles in Adrian (Charlesinadrian) on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 04:15 pm:

For our honeymoon back in '64 my wife and I drove around Lake
Superior. We enjoyed it immensely, but there were several
things we learned that have kept us from doing it again )(so far).
First, when it comes to really spectacular scenary, the south
shore of Superior has it all over the north shore. Second, if you
are looking for a really great dinner featuring fish from the Big
Lake (does that sound so unreasonable?), we had to wait until
Duluth for a good whitefish dinner with the best meal coming a
day later up in the Copper Country. With that in mind we have
been happily exploring that wonderful country on the south
shore ever since.

Married 29 years ago on the shores of the big Lake at McLain......This beach looks like little or big Traverse or Lac La Belle. The south side of the peninsula is my favorite by far. See you on the 4th.......the most American part of the country I have ever visited on the 4th of July........(Gay for sure) The locals even put up with us tourists at White City and Gay on this day.......What wonderful people.........bringing my kite too........

By Erica - Florida Keys (Erica) on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 09:40 pm:

Is there someone in pastyland who could bring us a current picture of Jacob's Falls and the Eagle River Falls? They must be spectacular at this time of year. And not trying to push it,but how about a current picture of Scott Falls?

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Saturday, May 13, 2006 - 11:19 pm:

Tony, good luck finding an old fashioned pie crust receipe. (Whisper) Even I use a mix these days :o Used to bake a great crust from lard but no more. Used to bake 4 pies at a time when all the kids were home. Lasted 2 days!

By Michael Du Long (Mikie) on Sunday, May 14, 2006 - 12:02 am:

Tony, I will have my daughter write down my mothers recipe and e mail it to you.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, May 14, 2006 - 12:31 am:

I've said this before, but you can go to the Betty Crocker Cook Book and use the pie crust recipe in there. It makes great pasty crust too. We just refrigerate it for about an hour and the pasties turn out great. Try it and let me know what you think.

Hey, look at me up at this time of night!!! It's 11:35 here. Where are you Sur5er? I'm going to bed now though so you don't need to answer me. Just thought I'd let you know that I can be a big girl too.

Happy Mother's Day to all of you Moms out there.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Sunday, May 14, 2006 - 02:36 am:

Usedtobeayooper, Here I am :) Just finishing up some paperwork, before I head to bed. Nighty night :)

Tony, Try Fran's trick for pasty dough...use the refrigerated pie crusts ;)

By Tim in Oscoda (Timmer280) on Sunday, May 14, 2006 - 04:03 am:

Tony,
This isn't our family receipe but this is off a magnet I bought at a Mackinac tourist trap last summer...
8C. flour
3 1/2 C. shortening
1 tsp. sugar
1 tsp. salt 1C. Ice Cold Water
Mix dough for crust, being careful not to over-handle!

Hope that helps...

By maija in Commerce Township (Maija) on Sunday, May 14, 2006 - 07:10 am:

use lard

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Sunday, May 14, 2006 - 09:21 am:

Tim, We have that magnet on our fridge too. I loved it and had to have it even though I know how to make pasties. And don't use lard. It's not needed.

By Willem Crous (Thundercloud) on Friday, June 5, 2009 - 09:43 am:

In my dream the other night I walked this beach... Next to a body of water that is as massive as the ocean on thee eye, but still a lake in my mind. So when i forgot about the whole thing, I stumbled on this sight looking for a teacher position in Am or Can. And then I saw the name of a town, Thunderbay that struck a cord, but the photos was out of a wrong vantage point.. Instintively I knew I was on the South shore and then I looked on to this piece of beach.. This was it! A M A Z I N G!

For a scientific kind of guy, i would take my dreams a bit more seriously! The colours was the same. It was just the same.

Well, maybe it was de javu. Maybe, just maybe, I might walk the south shore one day..
