That was Albin Liimita back in 1998, a resident at Still Waters, jogging around the building. The note that day mentioned we were having 70°+ temps that week, not too unlike the current month.

This morning at 5 am as I walked with our dog Buddy around the block here in Eagle River, it seemed like there was a warm breeze blowing in from the Lake. And the wind direction brought the rumbling sound of a freighter which was passing, much as today's Pasty Cam. Life hasn't changed much in the past 8 years here in the Keweenaw. A pleasant way to start the week.

By WishingIWasInDaUP (Sur5er) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 06:31 am:

Good morning everyone :) Just finished up binding the last of the paperwork, and soon I will be headed to bed.
Kosk, Glad to hear that your dad made it to the cottage safe and sound...and who could blame him for being so anxious to get the summer rollin, eh ;)
Usedtobeayooper, About those flamingo eggs...I wonder if that's where those plastic Easter eggs that people hang on their trees come from :)
Beverly, Didn't hear from you last night, so I trust that you had a painfree night, and slept like a baby ;) ((((((((((HUGS)))))))))

Mornin'

By kosk in Toronto (Koskintoronto) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 06:59 am:

Sur5er--

Well done! Sleep tight.

I bet my dad is already out there prowling
around and thinking up projects to do the next
couple of days.

My daughter and her boyfriend have already
taken the paddle boat out on the lake--I'll bet
they were the first ones out there this season.
Hard to believe that it was just 5 weeks ago
when I was up there and ice huts were
festooning the lakes.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 07:33 am:

Good morning everyone! Charlie, I'll be sure to drive past the Hut when I'm "home" next month to see what's going on. It must be so nice to live in Eagle River and walk your dog at 5 a.m. and not be worried about anything. I like to wait until it's light to walk my dog in the morning. I don't trust anybody, hence, the dog. She's my knight in shining armor because she doesn't like, or trust, anybody except us. Just the way I like it.

Sur5er, I was thinking that those eggs could be it. You see them laying around yards in later March or April all the time, as well as in the trees. I've never spotted an actual bird in a tree though, so just figured it'd have to be a ground thing. Maybe the Tact and Taste police take the mommies and put holes in the eggs, hang them from the trees and figure they won't hatch that way. They're very sneaky you know. Aren't there enough animals in danger of extinction for crying out loud? Sheese!!

Kosk, Your dad must be having a blast. I wish I had a cabin in the UP. When we go we stay with my folks. Sometimes we rent a cabin on the BIG LAKE somewhere for a couple of days. I have to have my dose of THE LAKE when I'm there. We used to "live" up at Little Traverse before private owners closed off the swimming place. Sigh. What lake is your dad's cabin on?

Oh Sur5er, Good job getting your paperwork done. I don't envy you your job. It would make me nervous. Definitely get the adrenalin moving, that's for sure eh?

Deb S. I have a 110 lb. male Doberman Pinscher that wouldn't hurt a flea, unlike what most ignorant people think of that breed, but I feel so safe with him anywhere. Because his ears are cropped which gives him that alert, heads-up appearance and his size, I think it intimidates people. Which is good nowdays living in a large city where there are people that can and do more damage than what my Dobie could ever possibly do!

Hi
Since it is smelting season here I found this interesting blurb in the Holland Evening Sentinel
Holland Evening Sentinel (Holland, Michigan) > 1952 > May > 2
Upper Peninsula Output of Smelt on Increase.
Houghton
The Upper Peninsula is coming into it's own as a smelt producing area.
The Northern Co-Operative Wholesale company at Hancock just finished a pack of 165 thousand pouns of the silvery little fish for the eastern market.
The smelt came from as far as Escanaba and menominee 200 miles away. Last year a few thousand pounds were prepared , but only on an experimental basis. And up on the Keweenaw peninsula , never much of a place for smelt runs, Ernest Haataja of Ahmeek, dipped his net 840 times before it came up empty.

By Deb S. (Usedtobeayooper) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 09:29 am:

Janie, Yes, my son has a dobie. Sweetest little girl in the world. She wouldn't hurt a flea either. We just love her to death.

My dog is part husky and part lab. I don't think she'd actually hurt anybody if they were brave enough to approach her, but she growls at them and shows her teeth which is enough for most people. All you'd have to do is stretch out your hand to her and she'd melt, but they don't know that. I used to have a 100 pound rott/german shepherd combo. She was as friendly as could be. However, we couldn't get house insurance through some companies because of our "mean" dog. What a name these dogs get for no reason other than their owners are probably mean to them. If you treat them with love, they'll return it unconditionally. I don't leave the yard without my dog.

Bad/mean people make bad/mean dogs of any breed.

About 20-25 cars at the mouth of Coles (Cowles?) Creek last night--the smelt are running. If the Hut were opened maybe fresh fried smelt would be on the menu.

Just wondering if anyone from the Calumet area might know if there are any Churches or organizations that take donations of homes for the needy? I have one in Calumet.
Thanks!

Japei,I enjoyed the beautiful flowers on that site.

Oh,I wish I had some fried smelts like my Mom made. They were so good! Back in the 50's there was always a bunch of us down by the bridge in $Bay dipping our nets. I wonder if they still run there.

By David Hiltunen (Davidcorrytontn) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 02:11 pm:

I was wondering that too Fran.I used to get me buck buck buckets full the decade after you.A mess of Smelt in Bosch Beer flour batter,Crounchy crunch crunch, oh so goooood.

By Ms. Katie (Mskatie) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 03:51 pm:

By Robinohio (Robinohio) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 04:33 pm:

I remember when my uncle would call from up north and say the smelt are running. my Dad and my uncles would jump in the car that night and up they would go. I got to go once. I was amazed to see all those silvery fish in one group. Then cleaned fish for what seemed forever but while we were my Uncle cooked us some on the old wood stove.wood smoke and fish what a scent to remember .can anyone post some pic's of smelt fishing.

I was just reading the posts about smelt. Earlier I was looking at some of the guest gallery photos and came across this picture from Brita Haapala. Does that make you hungry or what?

Brita's smelt frying

By
Liz B (Lizidaho) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 06:22 pm:

JH and All,
Brita's picture of the pan of smelt just made my tummy very hungry. I remember the family smelth trips when it was so cold and the net was heavy. Dad cut off the heads and we were allowed to put them on a stick and cook over the fire. But the next evening when Mom did up a huge batch we really crunched down!

By Downstatedon (Downstatedon) on Monday, April 24, 2006 - 09:51 pm:

Oh Brita, those smelt look so very good. I also
like them pickled. Ummm!!
