Put a layer of ice and white on the banks of Gitche Gumee, then add a veil of snow in the air and the terrain becomes almost unrecognizable. Corinna Greenwood was recently in the Copper Country for a visit and headed out on the shores of Lake Superior to do some cross country skiing. She happened upon this jellyfish-like creature, baring its icy teeth at her. In the background you can faintly see a Keweenaw landmark appearing through the snowy flurry. Just in case you still aren't sure of what you're viewing of in the distance, here's a shot from the archives to help...

That drippy, foggy look is something we've seen quite often this winter. Today looks like more of the same, with temps (as John Dee would say) topping out near 40.

Just a reminder, two weeks from today, shortly after noon, you will want to bring the whole family to Sherman Field at Michigan Tech, to help make history breaking 3 world records. Find out more at the MTU 'WorldRecord' website. There's no cost to participate, and everyone will receive a free souvenir of the event. Hope to see you there!

WOW! What a sight to wake up to. Those are some fantastic shots. I have quite a few shots of the lighthouse and have been out there, but the wintery scene is fabulous! And remember when the bridge WAS that color? Not impressive, that's for sure. It's much better now. Anyway, mornin' to all you yoopers, those of us who used to be and those of us who wanna be. (I think deep down we ALL wanna be in one way or another or we wouldn't keep visiting this site.)

Oh Yes, light houses! My second favorite behind the ore freighters! I have been to Copper Harbor just a handful of times, but, is Sharon Smith's home somewhere near the Copper Harbor light house area? I'm just judging that by the view of her cam position.

Driving through Keweenaw yesterday I noted there is really little ice on the shores of The Big Lake. In fact, Brunette Park looked inviting for swimming. What folks out of the area do not see is that, depending on the temperature, the Keweenaw Waterway is alternately covered with a very thin coat of ice or is, in many places, OPEN WATER. Open areas include parts of Oskar Bay, Markham's Resort to the UPPCO property, and The Bridge Area past MTU. It's a far cry from several years ago when folks were skating in the center of the waterway near the Hancock swimming beach.

HELLO HANCOCK/HOUGHTON; there is MAGNIFICENT weather again..I see as look in webcams!

JanieT: You can see Sharon's house from the Harbor Haus. We always take our binoculars in. During one dinner, we saw an eagle in a tree, scuba divers, ducks, hummingbirds, Sharon's house, the lighthouse, and boats coming and going. It was quite an entertaining dinner! Her house is somewhere over towards the lighthouse, a ways down the shore from it.

Wow! It is 48.9 degrees here in Calumet at 2:30 pm. Is
it really January? What a January Thaw we are having
this year!!!

Hope Corrina didn't get stung!
It's amazing what Mother nature can come up with.

I'm not sure how to post photos in this forum. I've included ... a photo taken from just about the same location as this original photo. Mine was taken last September.
