Wreaths Across America is a national event where more than two million volunteers and supporters gather to “Remember, Honor and Teach” at more than 5,200 participating locations in all 50 states, at sea and abroad. Laurie Bashaw and her hubby, Ed Korpi take part in the event yearly, at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette. She said the day they laid these wreaths, the “feels like” temperature was minus 20 degrees, so it was a little more difficult with the cold and deep snow, but she just kept thinking about what our men in uniform did for our country, which she said was way more than what they did that cold day. They said each name out loud and thanked each one of them for their sacrifice.

Then they went to the Negaunee and the Ishpeming cemeteries to place wreaths that they had made earlier in the week, on Laurie’s husband Steve’s grave and Ed’s Dad George’s grave. She said they had to shovel down quite a ways to get to Steve’s marker in Negaunee, but there wasn’t quite as much snow in the Ishpeming cemetery. A big thank you to Laurie and Ed for honoring our Veterans like this, along with their own Veterans too.

Visit Keweenaw shares the news that the Portage Lake Lift Bridge is open and ready for snowmobile traffic underneath the bridge, as of December 17th! Thanks to the Keweenaw Snowmobile Club and the Houghton Department of Public Works.

A labor of love and
respect!
A special thanks to
all who participated.
And I’ll bet there are
a lot of exited sledders
out there.
