I was so excited when I saw these photos at the Houghton Douglass Falls, from Melanie Hakala Rossi as she had visited the falls and said the parking area was blacktop, with painted lines and it was open with other cars there at the same time recently, so she thought the falls were now open. But we drove by a few days later and the orange barrels were at the entrance, blocking the way in again. Melanie did say that it didn’t look finished near the falls and she believes they will be building viewing platforms before it will be officially opened and dedicated as a Veteran’s Park by the State, but unfortunately none of that was started. So the falls are not open yet at this time.
I guess we’ll just have to enjoy the beautiful fall colors Melanie captured around the tallest falls in Michigan (110 foot drop from the top). Just a reminder that you still can view the falls from down below, but it’s an approximate one mile hike through the woods to get there. Thanks for the photos and info, Melanie!
Let’s go on a hike with Nathan “Invincible” Miller and Visit Keweenaw, to Mount Baldy near Eagle Harbor. It’s about three miles to the top and the fall views, including freighters on Lake Superior if you’re lucky!

I had heard that they were finished also. We were going to go in, but there were still barrels there. However, there were at least 6 or 7 cars parked on the road with people going in. I didn't want to do that so I figured I'd wait. But maybe I'll go in the spring when they should be running good. We'll see. In the meantime, I'll just enjoy these pictures that Melanie captured.
I've been going through old photos and deleting some off of my phone, and I can't believe how dull the colors are this year compared to others. I've got such beautiful fall color photos on my phone from previous years. Donna is probably right about the Canadian wildfires causing such a lack of vibrant colors. What a shame.

It is a shame, indeed....We depend on tourism bucks...I hope we still get some. This fall is just such a let down tho. Maybe we'll get ONE day...who knows? There is so much green out there, and someone told me the ground by them is covered in green leaves??? wha...not good. Yep that smoke is still bothering us...

Nice set, thanks Melanie! I wish I could hike the video to the falls. They’re just a trickle now, but I bet they’re grrrrrrreat in the Spring.

Alex, I'll do my best to get there next spring. The good Lord willing.
Donna, green leaves on the ground? That so sad. We wait all year for this beauty and, though there's some out there, it's sure not as stunning as usual

I have always wanted to see these falls in person. Maybe next year. I have heard comments about the fall colors not being as vibrant this year and that it could be from all of the smoke we all experienced this summer. Make sense??

Hi Sorry to hear about the dull fall colors. I'm hopimg that there'll be something decent in the Northern Lower next weekend.
DebS, I have a thought about your old photos being better. I tended to take pictures of the best/most colorful trees, so what is in my photo album isn't necessarily the best record of what was there.

That's very true, Kathryn. I didn't think of that. But honestly, it's pretty dull UP here this year. I went to the Porkies last weekend because the color was supposed to be at 50%, but it sure wasn't. It was still beautiful, just not what we're used to seeing.

Beautiful pictures and video, wish I was up there right now. But the next best thing and pregame meal right now at 6:45 on Sunday night is a Pasty Central Pasty with ketchup, Hines 57, and butter when it comes out of the oven scalding hot! GO LIONS!!
