Isaac Diener always seems to find the colors, no matter if it’s colorful auroras or the beauty of the fall leaves here in the Keweenaw, like today’s shots. He took these on Highway M26, between Painesdale and Twin Lakes last week, so the colors are happening in different places at different times. According to other sources the peak color for this year is supposed to be happening right now, into the first week of October. But don’t worry, if you’re missing it, because we’ll be sharing pictures from folks even after the peak season is over. A few mispronunciations of places, which I thought then, that this might be a good time to let folks know that if you’re unsure of how to pronounce a name or place, you can go to Google and type in “pronounce Mackinac” and you’ll get results that help you say it correctly. It’s a handy tool if you’re making videos or speaking publicly.

Fall is such a beautiful time of the year. Hearing Mackinac
mispronounced is as painful as having sauna mispronounced. I
was in a gift shop in Mackinaw City, and hearing Mackinac
mispronounced, I politely tried to let this lady know the correct
way to say it. She was so sure that she was correct and I was not,
turned around and stormed out of the store. Oh well, I tried.
Maybe I should have asked her how to say sauna!! Enjoy the fall

I'm glad to see the fall colors. Red maples seem
to turn color earliest.

That video was a bit different. First, that they
ranked the Soo locks 20th and Castle Rock 1st.
Second, I think more place names were
mispronounced than not, though I didn't keep exact
count.

Laurie B., it's too bad the lady wasn't open to
your information. I, on the other hand, admit my
ignorance: what is the correct way to pronounce
sauna?

Kathryn, it's sowna, lol. When I moved
away from the UP, I was laughed at so
often for the way I said sauna that I
assumed I was wrong. It depends on
where you live as to how you pronounce
things I guess. Karaoke is another one
that I got laughed at over. Oh well.

These pictures are so pretty. We're
starting to see some change UP here,
but not a lot where we are. Soon the
world will be a carousel of color. My
cousin in Twin Lakes had a picture of
her home on TV 6. She's really got a
lot of color there. It's simply
gorgeous.

I love red. And it does seem to be the first
color. One of the most beautiful reds I've seen is
in the Baraga State Park. I always had a hard time
getting a good red picture too. I'm weird. What
can I say...

People just don't have a clue if they've not lived
here. I used to work at the Mariner in Copper
Harbor...and people would come in, in the
summer...and ask, "How do you get to Aye-al Roy-
yal"? (Start at the top of Brockway and go really,
really fast...lol) Winter tourists were just
awesome. They came for fun...
