Check it out, folks, Kevin Dunham has done it again. He captured photos of the Rainbow Trout fish run in an Alger County river, as they’re performing their courtship “dance” during spawning times. The bottom photo is my favorite as you can see the colors of the Rainbow Trout around the gills. But the photos of the fish jumping into the cascade are a close second for me.
I don’t know much about this process, but from what I could find online, the rainbow fish normally spawn during the first light hours of the day. The males perform courtship behaviors in the hopes it will attract a female. These include things like rapid swimming, displays of their colors and fins, and sometimes will even nudge the females. Once the male attracts a female, they position themselves side by side, the female lays her eggs and the male then fertilizes them. Eggs normally hatch in 7-21 days. Sounds like quite the process!
Kevin recorded a video also, where you can see the Rainbow Trout fish jumping to make their way up the small cascade to where the spawning takes place. What a great capture of both the photos and the video!

WOW! I truly had no idea Rainbow did this...I knew of Salmon runs and how world wide that is. And what a story that is as well...They spawn, then die. Mother Nature is beyond amazing. Well done, Kevin!

Nice pix, but wouldn’t spawning be easier by picking up a Co-Ho at some sleazy sushi bar?
