Chad Johnson spotted a huge heart on the roof of the Smart Zone Building in Houghton, so he quickly snapped a couple photos to share. Chad says: “People all around our communities have been displaying hearts in their window as a sign of support during this difficult time. Today while crossing the lift bridge, we noticed that the snow melting off the roof of the Smart Zone building, is in the shape of a heart.”

Today’s third photo is an example of the hearts in windows. To join in the Hearts for Hope – Yooper Strong movement, I decorated my front window, too. It’s all across the U.P. right now, folks are decorating their windows with all sizes, colors and designs of hearts to show solidarity and hope for our communities. There are some that are much more creative than mine, with heart rosaries, crosses, rainbows, trees, UP silhouettes, and more. Even with social distancing, folks can take a ride around or a walk in their neighborhood and see the “hope” that our communities have come together with, in this simple heart project.

Another project that gives hope is the one from Ann Gasperich. over the past week with her “Seconds of Solitude” videos. Today she takes us to the Tobacco River, with hopeful, soothing sights and sounds

Beautiful photos + video.

Nice photos and FANTASTIC VIDEO!! Thanks for the outing Ann!!

Side note.... U of M called this morning, no surgery this month, they have their hands full with the virus. I feel good and I'm not currently life threatening. They are currently converting a building for 500 beds to take the overflow from Detroit and many of the staff have been reassigned to handle the virus I was told. I expect to hear about a rescheduled surgery date in May... possibly for sometime in the Summer, but nobody can predict at this point.

Sure would like to grab Marty and take a road trip to God's Country.... but the Warden won't let me out!! :=)) and I don't want to want to go against the Gov either. How are you folks doing U.P. there, how about an update??

I agree, UC. Thanks a bunch, Ann, for taking us there.

And UC, what Penitentiary in Marty in? I probably have schematics.

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Monday, April 6, 2020 - 03:23 pm:

UC, i think the March postponement was meant to be. It kept you out of the 'line of fire' with the virus when you would have been very vulnerable. Just keep believing it will happen when it's supposed to, and all the changes you have made will only help you be healthier in the long run.

Roll with the punches, UC.

God rest the soul of Albert William Kaline. There will NEVER be another that will compare with him and all he did for the Tigers, Detroit, and their fans.

I would love to find out how I can get a copy of the picture with the heart? I have sooooo many pictures of things shaped like a heart. Love it.

Everybody stay safe out there.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, April 6, 2020 - 07:41 pm:

I agree, jbuck. When I was a kid growing up in Detroit, I can remember playing baseball and I always played right field...I was Al Kaline.

By Uncle Chuck (Unclechuck) on Monday, April 6, 2020 - 09:57 pm:

R.I.P. Mr Tiger!! Like above, I too wanted to be Al! He was a Class Act, Gentlemen, Humble and was an All Star 18 Times!!!! What Integrity and Character!! As a player, fantastic offense and defense a True Super Star! What I liked most about his game was his cannon arm from right field! Thank you Mr Kaline for the memories and for the love I have of the game, all because of you Sir!!

By jbuck (Jbuck) on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 - 01:07 pm:

A true reflection of how respected and loved Kaline was, was when he got his 3,000th hit on the road he got a standing ovation. It was in Baltimore, his home town, but i truly believe that it would have been the same in virtually any park.

Very true, UC, his arm was amazing. Saw this post, which says it all:

Saw him in an old-timers game when he was in his mid-late 50’s. He fielded a foul ball in the right field corner of Tiger Stadium, spun around and fired a line-drive no-bounce waist-high strike to home plate. Blew me away. Lots of guys in their prime couldn’t do that.

I was fortunate to see one game of the 68 World Series at Tiger Stadium as a 10 year old, back then the stadium was Majestic/Shrine like to me!!

By Thomas Baird (Thomas) on Tuesday, April 7, 2020 - 05:44 pm:

I went to 2 Tiger ball games, one in '72 and one in '74 when Kaline
was still with the team. In a June '74 game, the Tigers won over the
California Angels 5 to 2.

Greetings:

I too am a Detroit Tigers fan even though I live in another State. My last Tiger Stadium games were in late Summer of 1975.

In 1975 the Detroit area was in the 'pits', but the Detroit Tigers helped out the populace with $2 seats and fifty cent beers.

I can't recall the actual games. Probably because of the sunburn, couldn't have been the beer.
