Until I was looking in the archives for this date, I didn't realize the American Flag had flown proudly over the Pasty Cam so many times in the past 19 years. Here are a few that stood out for me on Flag Day.

In 2009, a poster from 1917 appeared on the Pasty Cam pages to celebrate the birth of our country's flag.

In 2010, Max & Sally Smith shared a photo of Old Glory flying proudly on the Houghton waterfront, with the Portage Lake Lift Bridge as the background.

In 2011, Kim Weed captured a unique shot of the setting sun shining through the American Flag, giving visual meaning to the reference of "blazing glory".

Today we celebrate the adoption of our Nation's Flag, so it's only fitting that the video clip is about the Flag, the etiquette in flying it and the history of its being. Watch and learn, but most importantly, fly your American Flag proudly!

On Sunday, June 11 (click →) Puerto Rico just voted to become the 51st US state. However unlikely that is to happen any time soon, here's a challenge for you:

How would we arrange 51 stars in the blue union (canton) (vs. the alternating 5 horizontal rows of six and 4 rows of five stars in the current flag)?

At least 51 is not a prime number, but its only factors are 3 and 17, perhaps suggesting an arrangement of three rows of 17 stars or 17 rows of three? Not a particularly attractive plan.

Any other suggestions? Get creative!

Another bit of US Flag trivia (from Wikipedia):

The man credited with designing the current 50 star American flag was Robert G. Heft. He was 17 years old at the time and created the flag design in 1958 as a high school class project while living with his grandparents in Ohio. He received a B- on the project. According to Heft, his history teacher honored their agreement to change his grade to an A after his design was selected.
